With a flick of the wrists Harry Brook is off the mark with a boundary through square leg off Salman Mirza.

The Pakistan seamer beats a fiddle by Brook with his fourth delivery of the over with a skiddy delivery which nips on a fourth-stump line.

Then off the penultimate ball of the over, Brook gets one back of a length and hammers a pull over the advertising hoarding for six.

We're told this is definitely a tactical decision to promote Harry Brook. Jacob Bethell is fine.

This is the first time in his T20 international career that Harry brook has batted at number three and the first time he has ever found himself at the crease in the first over of the match.

Shaheen was really appealing but Usman is not interested at all behind the stumps.

  6. Eng 3-1published at 1 over

Shaheen Afridi whizzes a beauty past the outside edge of Jos Buttler's bat.

Shaheen is pleading for a review after hearing something.

It passes very close to the bat, but UltraEdge shows nothing so Salman Ali Agha's instinct to keep his powder dry the right one.

Harry Brook has got out four times in a row to spin in this tournament. Is this a plan to get him away from the tweakers?

Shaheen Shah Afridi hasn't been at his best in this tournament but that could give him some real confidence.

    Golden duck!

It's pushed wider from Shaheen Shah Afridi - a touch of nip - and Phil Salt has a bit of a waft at it.

Usman Khan dives to his right claim a smart catch.

Pakistan's players are bounding out to the middle in Pallekele Cricket Stadium.

England's opening pair of Jos Buttler and Phil Salt are not too far behind.

All eyes on Buttler given a lean trot - 26, 21, 3, 3 and 7 - so far at the World Cup.

That's it from me for now! I think I need a lie down after the tail end of that opening innings.

But my colleague Timothy Abraham is on hand to take you through England's chase. It should be an exciting one.

    Over to you, Tim!

  15. 'Good powerplay, good chance'published at 15:14 GMT 24 February

England spinner Liam Dawson: "Will Jacks bowled really well in the powerplay so it was between me and him again. Obviously two right-handers in it fell to me. The hat-trick ball? I think the game dictates what you do in that moment. I knew they were going to come at me so it always going to be a yorker.

"Pitches like that, on the slow side, you have to simplify it and look to hit the stumps as much as you can. Hopefully we can chase it. I think if we have a good powerplay, we'll have a good chance of winning."

It's been a bit of seesaw innings. England were in control for phases while Pakistan looked like they might post a more imposing total. In the end it's competitive but in the balance.

It's not going to be straightforward for England on this pitch. Everybody is going to be looking at Jos Buttler. He's not scored as many runs as he's liked.

Shadab Khan manages to flick the ball into the leg side past Harry Brook at extra cover for a final boundary of the innings.

He follows that up by being run out by Jacob Bethell though, as Pakistan post 164-9.
