It has been a very bizarre tournament from England's perspective. Loss to West Indies, followed by very nervy wins against minnows. But then Australia actually go out. Then we beat Sri Lanka quite well, who had beaten Australia. It's not a perfect start to a chase, but I can't count England out yet.

    Eng 53-3published at 6 overs

Deep in his crease to Mohammad Nawaz and Harry Book proceeds to dispatch the Pakistan spinner back over his head for six.

A meaty bottom-handed wallop from the England skipper.

  3. Eng 47-3published at 5.5 overs

Tom Banton the new batter as Mohammad Nawaz begins his first over.

"Shabash, Shabash" chirps Usman Khan from behind the stumps after his first couple of deliveries but Harry Brook ups the ante when he gets on strike.

The England skipper strikes back-to-back fours including a flamboyant inside-out drive which flies through the covers.

That almost sums up everything we've seen from England throughout this tournament.

The batters get in, get a little bit of a start and then pick out a fielder in the deep. It has happened all the way through this tournament, again and again.

  5. Eng 36-3published at 5 overs

    Target 165

As Aatif said between innings, this was a fairly competitive score from Pakistan on a tricky-looking pitch.

Nobody will be breathing a bigger sigh of relief than Usman Tariq right now!

He is smiling, he joins the huddle, he is relieved. Jacob Bethell doesn't make his second life count.

    Bethell c Farhan b Shaheen 8 (Eng 35-3)

    Uh ohh.

Jacob Bethell looks to go leg side again against Shaheen Afridi but this time Sahibzada Farhan claims a fine sliding take in the deep.

    Bethell curses himself in frustration.

Usman Tariq will be a very relieved man.

We all feel for Buttler, but it is also the brutality of T20 cricket. An option could be to drop him down the order and promote Will Jacks. Either way, I want him in my team every day of the week.

    Will, Cambridge

Buttler's record counts for nothing right now. He has to be dropped. His cross batted shots also look dreadful when he is out of form.

  9. Eng 31-2published at 4.2 overs

Harry Books is playing expansively, but with the precision of a surgeon's knife.

He backs away a fraction and thrashes Shaheen Adridi through the covers for four.

Good call by Harry Brook to promote himself up the order. Now he has time and overs to play himself in, then go bang - he didn't have that earlier. Come on England!

Salt in the wound for Saim Ayub as Harry Brook pummels him through long-on for four.

That's got to be the worst drop of the World Cup so far!

It was spooned up in the air and he had all the time in the world to get underneath it. He got underneath it and he got his hands to it, but somehow the ball broke through his palms and dropped to the ground.

Usman Tariq - goodness gracious me, that was appalling!

  13. dropped catch

Bethell dropped on sixpublished at 3.5 overs

Straight up the chimney from Jacob Bethell off Saim Ayub.

Three Pakistan fielders converge but Usman Tariq fumbles and drops what is, for all intents and purposes, a sitter

  14. Eng 20-2published at 2.2 overs

"Listen to the ground, There is movement all around" are the opening lyrics from Night Fever, by the way.

An appropriate segue for how England should play spin this evening as Saim Ayub is the first tweaker into the frary.

Buttler has to be dropped, he is just a walking wicket at the moment. His confidence is all shot.

  16. Eng 18-2published at 3 overs

Pakistan are pumped and sharp in the field as Jacob Bethell arrives into the middle.

Bethell takes two balls to have a look before he steps across his stumps and whips Shaheen Afridi to leg to get off the mark with a single.

A song by the Bee Gees - Night Fever, I think - belts on the PA system at the Pallekele Cricket Stadium.

Shaheen Afridi pushes one across Jos Buttler, it stays a little low, and he gets an under edge behind.

  18. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 2.2 overs

    Buttler c Usman b Shaheen (Eng 17-2)

Shaheen Afridi, beard neatly trimmed and hair coiffured, gracefully runs in before powerfully flicking his wrist to generate that bit of pace as he delivers.

He bags the wicket of Jos Buttler, who perishes cheaply, with his second ball of the over.

It's a bit of slash at wider one from Buttler and an under edge is well caught by Usman Khan. Another bad day at the office for the England opener.

High, handsome and over the boundary at mid-wicket! A big six for the England captain.
