Ollie Pope is 27-years-old - he has plenty of time behind him. Even if he goes away and works on his game, even in three years time, he could still get selected.

    Target 435

Ollie Pope guides the ball past gully and scampers back for two before getting one with an inside edge onto this pad that rolls towards short fine leg.

Mitchell Starc is still getting this ball to do plenty, getting a couple to come back sharply - both Pope and Zak Crawley managing to do just enough to keep him out.

  3. Eng 28-1published at 8 overs

    Target 435

Good running from this England pair as Ollie Pope drops the ball into the covers and calls for a quick single.

A no-ball extends the over and Zak Crawley just watches the extra delivery go by.

Crawley is on one from 27 balls but has looked solid so far.

You really do feel for Ollie Pope. Australia is not the place for any respectable Test batsman to restore their confidence and come back to form. The Aussies just won't let you.

Ollie Pope is more convincing than we have seen previously.

  6. Eng 26-1published at 7 overs

    Target 435

Top shot from Ollie Pope, getting forward and driving crisply through the covers for four.

It comes a couple of deliveries after a very brave leave as Mitchell Starc got one to hoop back towards the off stump.

Australia have successfully employed a different tactic with the new ball this series, targeting the stumps much less than any other series in the past two years.

Australia's seamers in overs 1-10 - percentage of balls hitting stumps:

    • Australia in Sri Lanka 2024-25 - 21.1%
    • Pakistan in Australia 2023-24 - 16.6%
    • ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 - 12.5%
    • Australia in West Indies 2025 - 10.2%
    • West Indies in Australia 2023-24 - 10.2%
    • India in Australia 2024-25 - 7.8%
    • England in Australia 2025-26 - 6.8%

It has been a decent start for Australia. Plenty of dot balls. This is what Australia do. They apply pressure and what England need to do is not get bored out there in the middle.

  9. Eng 21-1published at 6 overs

    Target 435

After Ollie Pope gets across his stumps to shovel the ball to leg for a single, Pat Cummins produces a beauty.

Good length, pitching around off and nipping away just enough to beat Zak Crawley's outside edge.

England's batters are really having to dig in against this new ball.

  10. Eng 20-1published at 5 overs

    Target 435

After the ball flicks off Zak Crawley's thigh pad for four leg byes, Mitchell Starc is given an official warning for running down the middle of the pitch in his follow through.

You can't say the big quick isn't doing his bit to help out Nathan Lyon...

As for your prediction, Jason, those centuries sound great but Jofra Archer in to finish it off? Sounds far too nerve-wracking for me!

Centuries for Root, Brook and Stokes with Smith and Joff bringing it home. All possible.. Oh gosh, there I go again...

Ollie Pope, it's almost like he is trying to play it to mid-wicket and then decides he wants to play it straight. He has a strange old arc.

  13. Eng 16-1published at 4 overs

    Target 435

    Goodness me.

Pressure on Ollie Pope and he'll take all the good fortune he can get.

Pat Cummins finds his outside edge as the England right-hander pushes at one and the ball goes in the air but just wide of the slip cordon.

    Four runs. They all count.

This is a sliding doors moment for Ollie Pope. He is under pressure but if he can get a score here, against a side he's struggled against, then he can get confidence from it. I mean a proper score though and he could kick on.

A beautiful position for Ollie Pope to be in. He needs runs, and he has an opportunity to get runs.

  16. Eng 11-1published at 3 overs

    Target 435

Ollie Pope clips the ball through mid-wicket for the first two runs off the bat in this afternoon session.

But there is some chatter from the Australia fielders after a leading edge shoots towards point a couple of balls later.

Pope leaves the last to get through the over.

Ollie Pope deserves an opportunity to settle in and produce one of those innings. Chin up, and go for it Ollie!

    Erm.

Well, four to the England total but I'm not sure it's all great news as the ball rears up from back of a length and soars over Alex Carey's head.

    Four byes.

Ollie Pope is under a bit of pressure - how is he going to react?

Obviously, Joe Root is quality and there is Harry Brook too. There is plenty of batting to come.
