    Head c Crawley b Tongue 170 (Aus 311-5)

    Oh, that was odd.

Travis Head has looked like he could bat deep in 2026, let alone the afternoon session, but he suddenly balloons a pull high up into the air off Josh Tongue.

Zak Crawley sets himself at deep square leg, and despite staring into the sun manages to gather the catch while tumbling forward.

A likely match-winning innings comes to an end, and the home town hero walks off to waves of applause.

I'm just wondering who England are bringing out for the press conference tonight. They have burned off the assistant coaches. There is the physio, and there is the guy who drives the bus...

I have nothing but respect for these bowlers. Imagine how hard they've worked in their careers to get to this level. Imagine how much they've trained over the years. So why do they struggle to consistently hit good areas like the Australians do?

Australia have got enough now. Just declare, bowl England out before I wake-up in the morning and leave me to be sad about how good Australia are.

Brydon Carse, again, short and wide or overpitched. He needs to get a bit more consistency. Travis Head is seeing the ball so well and he just backs himself.

    Consecutive fours for Travis Head!

He times Brydon Carse's fourth delivery through mid-on, then sumptuously drives past a diving point fielder.

The first boundary brings up the 150 partnership from 209 balls, the second takes Australia past 300.

Another expensive over from Carse, with 13 runs coming from it.

It was a little bit shocking and surprising that England didn't play a bona fide spin bowler. We knew it would be hot and it breaks up, spins and bounces in Adelaide. It did get me scratching my head a bit.

I can understand packing the batting and you start scrambling aorund for that extra depth but Will Jacks has bowled the most overs in the first and second innings. If you are going to do that you want a full-time spinner.

If there is one thing you don’t need when you are playing a part-time spinner with two batters well set on day 4, it’s these PitchViz ratings.

Especially when you are staring down the barrel of a 400+ fourth-innings chase against a side with a spinner who has more than 200 wickets more than any current slow bowler in the game.

PitchViz vs spin in the past 10 years (higher score means batting is more difficult):

Adelaide: Day four: 6.7, day five: 8.0

Sydney: Day four 5.7, day five 6.1

Brisbane: Day four 5.4, day five 4.6

Melbourne: Day four 5.3, day five 5.7

Perth: Day four 3.8, day five 4.9

There is no up and down, and there is no reverse swing. It's just about getting through to the new ball. The new ball is nine overs away.

A couple of singles off Ben Stokes' third over of the day.

For those wondering, it's bright blue skies in Adelaide again after a somewhat overcast first couple of sessions yesterday.

There is some suggestion of some rain tomorrow if we get that far - although probably not enough to affect the result.

Two more for Travis Head with a cut shot, meaning Brydon Carse's second over goes for 10 runs.

Earlier in the over, Head also picked up two when a throw at an unguarded non-striker's end rebounded off the stumps and the batters were able to take an extra run.

Another landmark ticked off by Travis Head!

He brings up his 150 from 205 balls, lashing Brydon Carse through point for four.

A good ball from Ben Stokes angling into the top of off stump. Good delivery and that is where you want the majority of balls. I don't think the short and wide theory has been working too well.

That's a loose one to start from Brydon Carse.

The Durham seamer offers some width and Alex Carey dispatches the ball through the covers for four.

That's the only scoring shot of the over, as Carse tightens up.

Ben Stokes with four dot balls to Alex Carey, but the Australia wicketkeeper works his penultimate delivery out to fine leg for a single.

England bowled just three maidens yesterday with Jofra Archer responsible for two and Brydon Carse delivery the other one.
