Have your say on England women this summer

  1. NZ 42-1published at 11 overs

Charlotte Edwards is perched over to my left on the England balcony. I wonder when she'll choose to have her word.

All this talk of a ‘new England’ and we’ve already had five mis fields and a simple drop in 35 minutes. Maybe a bit more fielding practice and a bit less boot camp would have been preferable over the winter.

    Robin, Coventry

Doesn't look like the England fielding has significantly improved.

    Michael, Malaga

A good demonstration that fielding is still a major concern. Five proper misfields and an easy dropped catch in the first nine overs is genuinely awful.

England's catching has been under the scanner in recent times. In the ICC Women's CWC 2025, England dropped only nine catches across eight games with a catch efficiency of 78% - the highest of all the eight teams featuring in that competition.

In the one year prior to the World Cup last year, England's catching efficiency was a significantly lower 68%. England will be hoping that drop from Maia Bouchier is a rare occurrence across this summer.

  4. NZ 39-1published at 10 overs

That's a very solid start from Tilly Corteen-Coleman with no obvious sign of nerves. She's now an international cricketer.

New Zealand have been patient and then these last couple of overs they've capitalised off some loose deliveries from England.

  6. NZ 38-1published at 9.1 overs

Corteen-Coleman's first ball is a decent line and length but is nailed on the sweep by Melie Kerr for one.

Here'a a moment. Tilly Corteen-Coleman is coming on for her first bowl in international cricket.

She's already bossing her fielders around to set the field.

  8. NZ 37-1published at 9 overs

    Plimmer 17, Kerr 14

This isn't a great effort either.

Emma Lamb dives but can't stop a Melie Kerr drive at cover. Four more runs are the result.

Charlotte Edwards has said England's fielding has improved significantly in the past 12 months. She said it was the best of all teams at last year's World Cup.

For all the talk about England's fielding, that is not a great start. It was as straight forward as they come for Maia Bouchier

  10. NZ 32-1published at 8 overs

Debutant Jodi Grewcock comes over to give Bouchier a pat on the back. Bouchier is just standing with her hands on her hips. She's still thinking about it.

  11. dropped catch

Plimmer dropped on 17published at 7.4 overs

    Oh no.

Moments after Freya Kemp leaks four runs by diving over one at square leg, Maia Bouchier drops a sitting in the gully.

What were we saying about the fielding?

  12. NZ 23-1published at 7 overs

Lauren Bell continues to keep things tight and as a result Charlie Dean hasn't had to make too many tricky decisions so far.

Plug these two in and let them go.

Lovely to be listening to the first Women's international of the year. Nice to see three debutants too. Summer is here - although as someone from Yorkshire I'm sure it won't be that warm at Chester-le-street!

    Julie in Doncaster

  14. NZ 22-1published at 6 overs

    Plimmer 9, Kerr 7

Lovely from Melie Kerr who chops a cut behind point. That just shows you the form she is in.

It's been quite a timid start from New Zealand this morning. Losing Suzie Bates as early as they did is a hammer blow. There's always pressure on Melie Kerr to score runs and she's been watchful.

  16. NZ 16-1published at 5 overs

Georgia Plimmer gets her first boundary with a drive through the off side. It could have been stopped but is only parried in the ring.

England have a fielder lurking at mid-wicket for Melie Kerr. It's an interesting position for this stage of the match.

England start their summer home summer after their last international, 192 days ago, their semi-final loss to South Africa in the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup. New Zealand meanwhile have been fairly busier in the 50-over format after the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup with a 3-0 series win at home v Zimbabwe, followed by a 2-1 series win at home against v South Africa in March earlier this year.

  18. NZ 10-1published at 4 overs

You'll have noticed there's no Sophie Ecclestone today. She is managing a minor quad issue. Issy Wong was also due to play but had to pull out late with a hamstring problem.

England are playing it safe but it's not ideal with the World Cup a month away.

When the sun is out it’s lovely. Pity it’s clouding over!

    Alastair, Chester-Le-Street

  20. NZ 8-1published at 3 overs

    Kerr 0, Plimmer 2

Lauren Bell backs up her opening partner by conceding only a single from her second over. England's fielders are in tight. Keep an eye on their fielding today after all of the work this winter.
