So Nathan McSweeney turns to himself to bowl!

Nathan McSweeney would not have played much cricket down under in conditions this dark, but the former Australia opener and Aus A skip is now discussing quite animatedly with the umpires...

Has he been asked to take the fast bowlers off?

Four leg byes down past the short leg and wicketkeeper off Ben Sanderson's first ball of his 18th over.

Ben Compton is happy in his bubble, walking to square leg between deliveries, he then clips a lovely two into midwicket.

Former Exeter Univeristy student Raphy Weatherall with the fielding, his youthful pace makes Compton trot a bit faster, but gets in safely enough.

Ben Compton does score a run!

To the left of backward point, a controlled defensive push.

Barely been much beating of the bat with this new ball, the floodlights are taking over from natural light too, so I would not be surprised if the umpires take them off soon.

If they do not take them off and no wickets fall they will probably shake hands in five or so overs time anyway.

DBD does want to take a run as he whips Harry Conway through midwicket for a single, he goes to 34 then has a chat with Ben Compton, not that arguably the best blocker and leaver in the past decade of Championship cricket needs any advice on how to play this situation...

Mid-on is just hanging back a bit, teasing, but Ben Compton has no desire to run here and seems unlikely to offer a catch there.

Of course he sees out a maiden first over from Ben Sanderson this evening who has bowled seven maidens already this innings.

    County Championship

James Anderson celebrates a wicketImage source, Getty Images

The easiest pick of the bunch for the bowlers? Obviously Sir James Anderson.

With Derbyshire only needing 138 runs to win, Anderson took 4-18 from 9.5 overs and will likely end the weekend as the leading wicket-taker in Division Two with 15.

Kyle Abbott racked up 10 wickets for Hampshire in their convincing 241-run win at Yorkshire, with the South African taking 6-21 from 17 overs in the second innings, to follow up on his 4-49 in 20 overs in the first.

Somerset's Craig Overton might have only taken four wickets in the match at Essex but his excellent 141 in the visitors' first innings shows just how useful he can be with the bat.

A real all-round contribution in their 10-wicket win on his 32nd birthday weekend.

And finishing off the bowling attack, we've gone with Northamptonshire's Harry Conway, who took 5-36 in 15 overs as Kent were skittled for 178.

Conway also has 2-56 in the second innings with that game impacted by weather.

Harry Conway starts life with the new Dukes ball with a maiden to Daniel Bell-Drummond.

No alarm really for the batter who has faced 51 balls now.

Sawdust being brought out for Ben Sanderson to bowl the second new ball over.

If you're choosing a fast bowler who was a match winner surely it's got to be Jimmy A. Week in week out brilliant.

    William, Kent

Well, let's take a look at the bowlers then, William...

  11. new ball

New ballpublished at 17:19 BST 13 April

    Kent 178 & 237-5 v Northants 684-2 dec

Oh we may not get the thrilling spin field sets for long.

Harry Conway continues, now with three slips in place, a couple with the short leg pads on just to impede movement further/keep them warmer!

Former Millfield School pupil Daniel Bell-Drummond is pretty adept to facing new pills after years of doing so mind you.

  12. Postpublished at 17:18 BST 13 April

    Kent 178 & 237-5 v Northants 684-2 dec

After just two off the first four balls, Northants bring in another forward short leg all helmetted up.

Two more dots, the last needing Harry Conway to field when he is supposed to be resting between overs.

    Brilliant drama this.

  13. Funky field set time!published at 17:17 BST 13 April

    Kent 178 & 237-5 v Northants 684-2 dec

The light is not fantastic but if Northants are allowed to bowl their big Aussie quick then the umpires do not deem it an issue yet, then anyone can be chosen to bowl from this XI.

Calvin Harrison, the new number three bat, the contrasting bowler weaving away alongside big Harry Conway.

A slip, a silly extra cover, a forward short leg, a leg slip and the 'keeper of course make it four out of five close fielders with helmets on!

I love this time of a Championship round with this kind of field set!

Ben Cox celebrates his century for Leicestershire at SurreyImage source, Shutterstock

An honourable mention for Nottinghamshire's Kyle Verreynne who took seven catches, but we've gone for impact with the bat.

And that is Ben Cox, who scored a career-best 162 for Leicestershire from number seven as the Foxes scored 691 in their draw at Surrey.

It was also his first ton for seven years, so it's got to be worthy of a place.

Cox also took a couple of catches in a game of few wickets compared to most.

  15. Postpublished at 17:13 BST 13 April

    Kent 178 & 235-5 v Northants 684-2 dec

Big Harry Conway bowls next. He is surely a shout for our team of the round, which we probably should not officially announce until all nine games are finished...

Could he add to his 2-57 and push to join two Championship legendary seamers who's surnames start with A and are dead certs in this team, in the remaining 14 overs at Canterbury?

Whether we get that all in is a separate matter.

Amazing comeback from Lancs in a low scoring second innings for both sides. Jimmy continues to defy the odds. Good contributions from Harris who is class and Coughlin and Bosh

    A century for Ben Compton!

He pushes for three off Calvin Harrison and that takes him through to 102 not out from 243 balls.

One over down for Kent and just 14 more to survive (if weather even allows that... it's quite gloomy).

  18. Team of the week: Batterspublished at 17:08 BST 13 April

    County Championship

Jamie Smith raises his bat after getting a century for Surrey against LeicsImage source, Shutterstock

Next up, the top order batters.

Surrey's Jamie Smith is the number three after his mammoth 166 in the first innings for Surrey against Leicestershire, before making 89 in the second in the high-scoring contest with Leicestershire at The Oval.

Marcus Harris also has to be one of first names on the team sheet. The Lancashire number four made 125 and 66 in their dramatic win over Derbyshire.

Sussex's Jack Leaning makes the cut for his excellent 120 not out in the second innings to lead Ollie Robinson's side to a five-wicket victory over Warwickshire.

Up next, it might not have been the biggest score, but there may not have been a more important century scored this weekend than the one by Nottinghamshire's Jack Haynes against Glamorgan.

His vital 100 came when Notts were slumped at 103-6 and he rescued their first innings to help post 279.

The defending champions went on to seal victory earlier today - but it could have been a very different game without the runs from Haynes.

  19. Play to resume in Canterbury at 17:10 BSTpublished at 17:05 BST 13 April

    Kent 178 & 231-5 v Northants 684-2 dec

Ladies and gentlemen, we will have more cricket!

The covers are off, Canterbury is bathed in sunshine and it has been decreed that Kent and Northants can have a minimum of 15 more overs of play.

    Can Kent survive?

    County Championship

For the opening batters, it's hard to look past Northamptonshire skipper Luke Procter, who scored a career-best 261 not out against Kent - and the ninth highest all-time score for the county.

Northants are 275 runs ahead and need five wickets to win in Canterbury if weather allows.

And alongside Procter, how can it not be Ben McKinney?

The Durham opening bat also made a double ton with his highest-ever score of 244 as his side put on 605-5 declared against Gloucestershire in Division Two.

Durham went on to win by an innings and 225 runs.
