The hover cover has left it to the last moment before floating off to beyond the boundary.

The mascots are out in anticipation of the teams emerging, but I have to tell you that there are some more murky-looking clouds lurking around Sophia Gardens.

  3. 'Wanted to know target with rain around'published at 11:53 BST 16 May

    England v New Zealand

New Zealand skipper Melie Kerr: "We're gonna have a bowl. It's a bit overcast, the wicket looks a little bit green. With the rain around, we want to know what we're chasing and know the conditions up front."

On bouncing back after the loss in Durham: "For us it was probably how we finished our innings. To lose the wickets at the back end gave us a total under par, but we did well to take the game close. You make mistakes and cricket keeps you humble."

On captaincy: "I'm enjoying it more than I thought. It helps having success as a group. The reason for the enjoyment are the people in the group from players to staff. I'm sure there will be hard moments moving forward."

  5. 'We showed grit on Sunday'published at 11:45 BST 16 May

    England v New Zealand

England captain Charlie Dean speaking to Sky Sports: "We would have had a bowl. You have to play the game in front of you. We'll have a crack with the bat."

On the win in the first ODI at Durham: "As a team we weren't our best selves. Winning in those games is really important, showing that grit. Previously we might not have got over the line, so that was promising."

There are now dozens of people all over the outfield at Cardiff - players warming up, media, ground staff and others.

All in all, it's much more encouraging than it was around the notional start-time, and as it stands we will still have a 50-over match.

  16. Start delayedpublished at 10:45 BST 16 May

England v New Zealand (11:00 BST)

Hello, and welcome to our coverage of the third one-day international between England and New Zealand from Cardiff.

Unfortunately, we won't be bringing you any news of any cricketing action just yet as it has been very wet in Cardiff and the start has been delayed.

The good-ish news is that it is not actually raining at the moment, and there will be an inspection at 11:15am.

The covers are on and the groundstaff are working hard to get rid of the water - of which there is plenty.
