How is Charis Pavely not under consideration for international recognition, bearing in mind the tried and failed troupe in the middle-order?

    John, London

  2. Eng 81-3published at 18 overs

Freya Kemp has a big hack at Bree Illing's delivery and sends a thick edge flying out to third.

It bounces a fair way in front of the fielder and Kemp takes a single.

A couple of wides in this over - Illing has bowled seven in the innings. She won't bowl any more though, as she's bowled seven overs and is maxed out.

The left-arm seamer finishes with figures of 2-29.

  3. Eng 78-3published at 17.1 overs

    Capsey 20, Kemp 3

    And we're back.

Alice Capsey gets up on her toes and drives Bree Illing's opening delivery into the covers for a single.

  4. Restart at 15:45 BSTpublished at 15:43 BST 16 May

Well, they're listening to you, Natasha - we're getting going imminently.

The resumption of play has been brought forward by 10 minutes to 15:45 BST.

It's a perennial complaint that the resumption time is set too late after rain has cleared, a rare revision is to be welcomed.

The number of overs per innings has also been upgraded from 32 to 33 - three bowlers will be able to bowl seven overs, two will be capped at six.

Next up on the podcast front - it's a review of England men's Test squad for their series against New Zealand.

Henry Moeran is alongside World Cup winner Ebony Rainford-Brent & BBC Cricket Correspondent Stephan Shemilt.

They discuss Ollie Robinson getting recalled to the side, as well as Emilio Gay's possible chance to open the batting for England and the selections of James Rew and Sonny Baker.

  8. Play to resume at 15:55 BSTpublished at 15:11 BST 16 May

    Oh, hello.

    They're going to go again.

A 15:55 BST resumption with 32 overs a side. Whether the rain returns before then is another issue.

Still, rain radar, my trust in you is shattered.

We've got plenty of podcasts for you to listen to while we wait for news from Cardiff.

First up, Alex Hartley and Katherine Sciver-Brunt preview the T20 World Cup alongside Henry Moeran.

I'm looking at the rain radar and Cardiff is under a sheet of rain that doesn't pass - and then only partially - until about 17:15 BST.

They'd need to resume by 17:33 to get 23 overs in - three for England and 20 for New Zealand.

I wouldn't hold out masses of hope here.

I would say it's unlikely that Heather Knight will shunt around at this stage of her career, William.

But if that's an experiment that everyone likes, let me know via the get involved button.

We know that Nat Sciver-Brunt will come back into the top-order but should we look at Heather Knight opening in white-ball cricket? Jodi Grewcock could then move into the middle-order where she normally plays

The rain is still on and off but they're not budging the covers in Cardiff.

If we don't get back on this will be a rather low-key end to the ODI career of Suzie Bates.

The 38-year-old made her 50-over debut for New Zealand back in March 2006 and she's made 183 appearances in the format.

Don't forget she also appeared for her country at the 2008 Olympics - as part of their basketball team.

Over in the County Championship, Matty Potts has a five-fer for Durham against Kent - but given how the opposition are past 500 I'm not sure he'll be too happy with it.

You can follow our coverage of all today's county action here.

For those already casting their eyes beyond this match, this series is followed by three T20 internationals - at Derby on Wednesday (18:30 BST) and then Canterbury next Saturday and Hove on Bank Holiday Monday (both 14:30 BST).

They're followed by three T20s against India from 28 May to 2 June, and some informal warm-up games will then bridge the gap until England start their World Cup campaign against Sri Lanka on 12 June.

    Thanks Tim.

To be honest, I exhausted a lot of my rain-based material on Wednesday, but let's see what we can eek out while we see if the players can return to the field in Cardiff.

We've been consulting various weather radars, and waving bits of seaweed around, and whichever way you slice it we're in for quite a delay by the looks of it.
