Jofra Archer's opening over was 144.7kph (89.9mph). That's the fastest any England bowler has bowled in the first over of a Test since records began in 2006, as well as the fastest first over of a Test in England in that time.

  2. NZ 5-0published at 2.1 overs

Jofra Archer gets one to straighten to Devon Conway at the start of his second over.

England appeal, thinking they have heard something, but Joe Root declines to pursue matters any further.

I think we've seen enough already that England are going to have to make this new ball work. It's perfect conditions right now for batting.

You can see that green tinge out there. The reason Joe Root picked to bowl is because there is that little bit of moisture. But, England will have to get something here.

  4. NZ 3-0published at 2 overs

Matthew Fisher, of course, plays his cricket at The Oval so will be aware of the importance of his little passage.

    A maiden to start.

The sun is out now at The Oval, bathing the green sward in glorious colour.

  5. NZ 3-0published at 1.4 overs

Matthew Fisher gets a couple to nip back into the left-handed Tom Latham from round the wicket, and the Kiwi opener wisely shoulders arms.

Some even more extravagant movement midway through the over.

A testing little period for New Zealand.

New Zealand will know that once you go 1-0 down in a Test series, you've got to start the next Test well. These two will be looking to create a good foundation here.

  7. NZ 3-0published at 1 over

Devon Conway flashes a big drive at a wide one outside off stump from Jofra Archer which draws a smile from the England quick, and cheers of encouragement from the cordon.

Matthew Fisher will bowl the second over for England. Can he get it to nibble about a bit?

We all expect this pitch to be a beauty. It should be really good for batting this week.

  9. NZ 3-0published at 0.4 overs

New Zealand opener Tom Latham clips Jofra Archer's first ball to leg for a couple to open his account.

Archer, operating round the wicket to the left-handed opener, is then worked to mid-wicket from his fourth delivery

    Pitch looks true thus far.

I think this wicket will do a bit in this first session. Can the England bowlers make the most of it?

Right, Jofra Archer has the ball in hand at the top of his mark.

Tom Latham has just marked his guard.

    Play.

Kane Williamson would normally be coming in at first drop for New Zealand but, of course, he retired from all forms of international cricket earlier this week.

New Zealand captain Tom Latham spoke to Test Match Special on Williamson's departure at the toss.

"Kane hanging up his boots, totally understand his decision and reasons why. I certainly knew that it wasn't far away. I'm excited for guys to get opportunities," Latham said.

"The runs speak for themselves but the way he was able to push the team, he was a great example of what we were about."

"We did a lot of things right in that Test match. It would've gone either way. There's moments you reflect on, we did a lot of good things in that Test match, we're just excited about this week."

  13. 'Never thought I'd wear this blazer again'published at 11:28 BST 17 June

England captain Joe Root speaking to Test match Special at the toss: "Never thought I'd be here wearing this blazer again.

"It's always a privilege and honor to lead the team out. Had a slightly different role over the past four years. Obviously it's a very different team to what we had last week. It's full of excitement. Let's see what we can hit them with, first use of the pitch, we'll try to use the moisture on top."

On captaincy: "Just looking at this week really. Anytime there's uncertainty with stuff, you have to look after the here and now. That starts with getting a good start today."

Ben Stokes may not be here but he's still front and centre on the promotional video they play on the big screens before the players took the field for the anthems.

Both sets of players are lining up for the anthems at The Oval. England's players have all tossed their caps behind them on to the turf.

  16. How's stat?!published at 11:24 BST 17 June

    Andy Zaltzman
    Test Match Special statistician

This England side has just 281 previous Test caps, which is the fewest amount of caps that England have had since 2009. Joe Root accounts for 164 of them, 58%, which is the highest proportion of an England team's caps since 1946.

Essex batter Jordan Cox, Hampshire fast bowler Sonny Baker and Somerset wicketkeeper James Rew will make their Test debuts at The Oval today.

The last time England fielded three debutants in the same XI was against South Africa at The Oval in 2017.

They are not the only changes to England's team.

Surrey bowler Matthew Fisher will also play his second Test, more than four years after his first, while Jofra Archer returns for the first time this summer.

It also means a total of five changes to the XI that won the first Test at Lord’s by 115 runs.

  19. 'Do things a fraction longer'published at 11:13 BST 17 June

New Zealand skipper Tom Latham: "We would have had a bowl first as well. Conditions and tradition would mean it would be the decision but we need to bat well now.

"I think we need to do things a fraction longer than at Lord's - do things in partnerships with bat and ball for a longer period of time.

"It's been an emotional week since we got the news about Kane Williamson. I think what he has done for this group for a period of time, with his wealth of knowledge, and how much cares about the team, we are disappointed not to have here but we respect his decision."

I thought both captains would bowl. I think it will play nicely. I think with the rain we had this morning, it will do a bit. It's sunny so it will dry quickly.
