Have your say on England men this summer

  1. NZ 66-2published at 22.2 overs

A delightful wristy flick from Rachin Ravindra brings him another boundary off Jofra Archer through mid-wicket.

The Kiwi batter times it beautifully as he just leans into a fuller ball and it races beyond the dive of Emilio Gay for four.

  2. NZ 62-2published at 22 overs

A maiden from Matthew Fisher to back up that wicket from Jofra Archer. Watchful from Henry Nicholls.

Now, can Jofra Archer give Rachin Ravindra a working over before lunch.

David Renton: Re: cricketing professions - Peter Bowler (a batter though, ironically).

Paul Mitchell, Newcastle: If it's an all time professions XI how about Keith Fletcher?

Ian, Leighton Buzzard: Archer, Fisher, Baker, Tongue sounds like the direct-to-video sequel to Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.

  4. NZ 69-2published at 21 overs

Rachin Ravindra, the new batter, is off the mark with four off his first ball from Jofra Archer. The Kiwi effortlessly works Archer off his pads to the fence.

Tom Latham was looking to go very square. He's worked very hard to work through 75 balls, whether it's just straightened a bit on him. It was a good catch, two hands on it. Great effort.

For New Zealand, this is a very important mini session now.

He's caught! A most unusual dismissal. Jacob Bethell takes the catch. Tom Latham looking to turn the ball in the leg side. That's a good catch because Bethell wouldn't have been expecting that.

    What a strange dismissal.

  7. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 20.5 overs

    Latham c Bethell b Archer 27 (NZ 58-2)

Leading edge! Or perhaps of the back of the bat, even?

A bit of a curious dismissal. Tom Latham attempts to work Jofra Archer into the the legside but he's a little too early on the shot.

The ball flashes out towards gully where Jacob Bethell takes a superb diving catch to his right.

Perfect time for a breakthrough for England just before lunch.

I'd say this was quite a good toss to lose. Whilst the English bowler's speed has been up, they're firing a tad bit short.

  9. NZ 53-1published at 20 overs

Have you spotted a niche in the market here, Gemma? Get that presentation sorted and letter sent off to the ECB.

I would hazard a guess they have some sort of seminar or other on it, but so many decisions are done on what's happening out in the middle it's tough to replicate that in a classroom.

No DRS in the County Championship. It tends to be TV-driven thing.

I would imagine Joe Root will rely on Harry Brook's advice.

Anyway, Sonny Baker chalks up another maiden.

Gemma Lewis, Nottingham: How much training do new Test team players have using DRS? Is it used in county games? Could England potentially struggle with an inexperienced wicket keeper and cordon?

  11. How's stat?!published at 13:05 BST 17 June

    Andy Zaltzman
    Test Match Special statistician

Jofra Archer had an average speed of 90.2 in his opening spell. It's the third fastest spell that he's recorded for England and the fifth fastest opening spell ever for England.

  12. NZ 53-1published at 19 overs

    Jofra Archer is back.

His second ball is a fraction short which allows Henry Nicholls to play the uppercut again and pick up another four.

Nicholls is unbeaten on 17 while Tom Latham is 27 not out.

  14. NZ 47-1published at 18 overs

Sonny Baker with a maiden to Tom Latham.

Just thought of a cricketing profession - West Indies batter Seymour Nurse.

Mark Crosfield, Manchester: Can someone please tell me why England have elected to bowl on this batter's pitch? Weather set fair, loads of runs scored at the Oval this year, yet England elect to bowl?!

John Petrie, London: Both captains said they would bowl first. I wonder if they both still think that was the right choice?

Eli Bligh, Lowestoft: This England attack is looking very ordinary, going to be very hard to take 20 wickets.

Spin might come into play in the later days here. The only way England could've gone with a spinner is to play Rehan Ahmed as an all-rounder.

  17. NZ 47-1published at 17 overs

Short and wide from Josh Tongue and Henry Nicholls plays a relatively risk-free uppercut through point for four.

Henry Nicholls has worked so hard to get back into this New Zealand side. He has big boots to fill at number three, straight into the boots of Kane Wiliamson.

  19. NZ 42-1published at 16.4 overs

We'll happily welcome any other cricketers whose names are professions.

Josh Tongue fires in a yorker to Tom Latham which the Kiwi opener does well to dig out.

Matt W, London: (re: 12:41) Call Mark Butcher out of retirement to complete the ensemble.

Rob, Swansea: Harry Chandler (i.e. candle maker) plays for Shropshire. Might be a stretch for the selectors though, just to get the four men in a boat!

Mike, SW France: I would prefer all their professions were as fast bowlers!
