It's been really good cricket from both sides. New Zealand have given nothing away, they've been quite tight. The only wicket England have managed was a strangle, they haven't had many plays and misses.

It's a very good batting wicket.

  2. NZ 42-1published at 16 overs

Tom Latham square drives at a full delivery from Sonny Baker but Matthew Fisher helps out his fellow bowler with a fine diving stop. That was headed to the boundary.

New Zealand's run rate is 2.63 but they have played the situation well here. Batting should become easier as the day wears on.

England have used 16 players in this series already. The last time they used more than that was in 2021-22 against India, which was Covid affected and over two seasons. The last normal series where they used more at home was against India in 2002.

  4. NZ 35-1published at 15 overs

Tom Latham jabs a full delivery from Josh Tongue into the turf and sets off a single which is on the brisker side of things.

Tongue follows through and boots the ball towards the stumps but Henry Nicholls makes his ground.

Tongue bumps Nicholls with the penultimate ball of the over and the Kiwi batter bobs his head out of the way.

Neil Haines, York: We have a Fisher, an Archer and a Baker. Is there no candlestick maker available?

Joseph Surtees, London: England should have selected Sam Cook over Tongue. Then all four bowlers would also have been professions (Archer, Cook, Fisher, Baker).

We're definitely watching a New Zealand side who are confident in their batting.

  7. NZ 31-1published at 14 overs

After a brief pause for drinks, Sonny Baker continues.

He has a slightly idiosyncratic pitter patter of feet before he starts his run-up. Not quite Blair Tickner, but not far off it.

Baker angles a few deliveries into Tom Latham which then straighten but the Kiwi opener content to shoulder arms.

Tom Girling, Bradford: William in Bristol - no need to revise today; if you don’t know it now, you won’t learn it in time anyway.

Best to have a day to take your mind off the exam by watching the cricket and football. Just lay off the beers!

  9. NZ 27-1published at 13 overs

England certainly vociferous and showing plenty of intent with their appeals.

Josh Tongue strikes Tom Latham high on the pad midway through his third over. The New Zealand skipper tried to leave that which advances England's cause, but having just burned a review Joe Root is not sending it anywhere.

No wicket but Sonny Baker's first over on his ODI debut debut cost 14 so that was certainly better.

It was the cordon that called for that, Sonny Baker didn't fancy it. There was a lot of noise though.

It didn't feel like a good review.

UltraEdge shows there was no bat involved.

Henry Nicholls was attempting to flick a delivery quite fine but the noise England have heard - as Simon Mann suggests - is the ball brushing the pad.

    It feels like pad this.

  15. England reviewpublished at 12 overs

Has Sonny Baker strangled Henry Nicholls down the leg side here?

Given not out on the field.

England captain Joe Root sends it upstairs.

Sonny Baker is an exciting prospect for England.

  17. NZ 22-1published at 11.3 overs

Sonny Baker is tossed the ball by Joe Root.

His third delivery is short and squares up Henry Nicholls, beating the outside edge.

Baker gasps. Nicholls does some gardening.

    That was close.

I'd be intrigued to know the conversations that New Zealand have had coming into this game. If you look at the England bowling attack, they haven't had a great amount of experience. If they put on the pressure, England might have to rely on Archer.

If I was planning on playing against them, if you can get after one of the seamers, Joe Root is going to have a problem. It's just whether or not they are that type of team. New Zealand are quite an old school team, just go out there and dig in.

  20. NZ 21-1published at 11 overs

A bit of seam movement for Josh Tongue as he gets one to nip away from Henry Nicholls.

The cameras pan to Rob Key, who is sat with Richard Thompson and Andrew Flintoff, and is chuckling away at something or other.
