Instant redemption for Maheesh Theekshana in the powerplay.

Finn Allen flicked the ball out of his hands, looking to work the ball to the leg side, but it was a bit of a nothing shot really.

Theekshana takes an easier catch this time, tumbling forward.

  2. wicket

    Allen c&b Theekshana 23 (NZ 30-1)

    Maheesh Theekshana quickly makes amends!

No celebration after clinging on to the smart catch off his own bowling. He's still annoyed by the drop.

But he's removed the dangerous Finn Allen, who went back and tried to work the ball to leg. The leading edge carries back to Theekshana, who dives forward and to his left to take the grab.

Nothing shot but a big wicket.

It was another slower ball from Dilshan Madushanka, who has bowled a few already in this spell. He is looking to change the pace early.

But Maheesh Theekshana just wasn't able to cling on to the catch. It was a tough one but one he will feel he should be taking.

  4. NZ 30-0published at 3 overs

As is customary, the ball after the drop brings a boundary.

Superbly struck by Finn Allen, straight back over the bowler's head for four. Save your legs, no need to run for that.

  5. dropped catch

Seifert dropped on 6published at 2.3 overs

    NZ 53-0

Big chance for the breakthrough for Sri Lanka - but Maheesh Theekshana puts down the catch at short third!

It was a slower ball from Dilshan Madushanka, it drew the edge from Tim Seifert as he went for the big drive and the ball flew to Theekshana's left.

Not a dolly by any means but once he got to it, he'd have expected to hold it.

Those opening overs have really got New Zealand into this game.

Finn Allen is 17 off 8 so well ahead in the game, while Tim Seifert is a little bit more circumspective at the other end on 6 off 4.

This is a good platform already though, as they look to set a big total here.

  7. NZ 23-0published at 2 overs

    Seifert 6, Allen 17

An early look at spin and there's a slip in place as Dunith Wellalage comes on to bowl his slow left-armers.

There's pin-drop silence in Colombo as Finn Allen goes back and punches the third ball through extra cover for four.

Four more next ball! A bit of a shout from fans and players alike this time as the ball goes aerially through backward point... but well clear of the fielders.

Tim Seifert goes back and pulls the final ball away for four now. An expensive over. Good start for New Zealand.

The whole of New Zealand's batting order has clicked - everyone has come out and posted runs.

Rachin Ravindra scored 59 last time out, so even he's back in form.

I always feel they are a very, very strong opponent. They have terrific players of spin, which is required in the sub-continents of India and Sri Lanka.

The ball is swinging back in at the moment and slightly overpitched, but Finn Allen committed to that shot and clubbed it over deep mid-wicket.

He is away with a six and he is putting the bowlers under pressure.

  10. NZ 8-0published at 1 over

Dot ball to end the over with the in-swing from Dilshan Madushanka causing Tim Seifert to get an inside edge onto his pad.

The ball rolls to the fielder in an unconventional/ old school short mid-off position, essentially stood next to the batter at the non-striker's end.

  11. 6 runs

    NZ 7-0published at 0.4 overs

    Launched over deep mid-wicket!

After three good balls to start from Dilshan Madushanka, the left-armer pitches one right in Finn Allen's arc and the New Zealand opener whips the ball over the leg side, all the way for six.

The washout wasn't ideal really for New Zealand. You want to keep playing and to find that balance between taking rest where possible but also getting into it.

I'm sure they will be in good spirits, they look it. Their batters have been in really good so far in the tournament so they will be looking to impose themselves here.

There's plenty to play for in this group.

Sri Lanka will be kicking themselves about their performance against England. They had a chance and needed only 140 or so runs, which I would've expected them to chase.

It was like they wanted to win the game in 10 overs rather than 20 overs. If you have that sort of approach, you aren't being cautious or giving yourself time in the middle.

  17. 'Whoever is smartest to the big side will have a good day'published at 13:22 GMT 25 February

New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner: “It’s been a few days since we last played, disappointing with the rain the other night but can’t do much about that.

“The batting has been good, different guys have stepped up through different games which is all you can ask for. The two at the top have done a pretty good job so we'll see what this does - it looks pretty good - and put a good score on.

"With the dimensions of the ground, whoever is smartest to the big side is going to have a pretty good day."

  18. 'Our batters need to take it deep'published at 13:20 GMT 25 February

Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka: "The learning from the last game was that our batters need to take it deep. The bowlers actually did a decent job so I hopefully expect the same in this game.

"New Zealand might be adjusting to the spinners, so they never know what we are going to offer today. That's another reason why we've chosen to bowl as well.

"We've made one change from the last game, Kamil Mishara is out and Charith Asalanka comes in for that."

  19. Sri Lanka win the toss and bowlpublished at 13:17 GMT 25 February

There were huge cheers from the home fans when it was announced that Sri Lanka had won the toss.

Skipper Dasun Shanaka quickly chose to bowl first and confirmed one change to their XI. Kamil Mishara makes way for Charith Asalanka.

After a 10th consecutive loss at the toss, New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner also confirmed a solitary change - Cole McConchie is in for Jimmy Neesham.

Sri Lanka's loss to England in Kandy means the co-hosts are in must-win territory as they face New Zealand this afternoon.

New Zealand's washout against Pakistan gives them slightly more leeway in Colombo - but not much.

All to play for with three teams battling to qualify for the semi-finals alongside England. Let's get to the news from the toss...
