Ryan @14.26, who needs hitters to come in when Joe Root can do that? Axar Patel is thwacked for a huge six down the ground.

Might not be a bad time for Liam Dawson to get out, let some hitters come in and try to nab a quick 20-30 runs in what's left.

    Ryan, Devon

ODIs are the working man's Test match. A full day out with proper batting and bowling, collapses, recoveries, crafted innings and a proper lunch interval for beers!

    Mike, Southampton

Completely unfair to question Rehan Ahmed when he could easily start anywhere from three to eigh in the batting order. You have to question some other members position in this team, Will Jacks, Tom Curran, Jacob Bethell etc and you would think Rehan Ahmed could do a job in place of them

This is what fast bowlers do when they come out to bat. They don't run very well.

  4. Eng 235-7published at 45 overs

Joe Root and Liam Dawson put on 121 (134) for the seventh wicket, rescuing England from 107-6.

Jofra Archer wastes little time in getting off the mark, opening up his body and slashing Prasidh Krishna behind point for four.

The following delivery, he's nearly run out after umming and ahing in his crease before setting off for the non-striker's. A direct hit and it would have been curtains for Archer.

Liam Dawson got unlucky there. He got really deep in his crease but he's been out-thought by the spinner.

Very good innings from him, he's given England a sniff. Little bit unfortunate there, just trying to accelerate.

A very comfortable, straightforward catch for Rohit Sharma.

    The partnership is broken!

Liam Dawson sends the final ball of Axar Patel's eighth over arcing straight to Rohit Sharma on the square boundary, the fielder getting down on one knee in good time to take a simple catch.

Dawson departs for 68 (83) - his highest score in international cricket.

This partnership is now at 117 which is England's joint fourth highest in ODIs on the seventh wicket and the highest against India at this wicket.

Rather than wait, can we please just announce him as Sir Joe Root? Legend is a word used too often, but he genuinely is.

    Paul, Chelmsford

This could, could be a decent score posted by England here. Looks a tricky surface to get going on.

    Sam, Penygarn

Liam Dawson fits the Chris Woakes mould, batting at eight with great skill while being reliable with the ball in any situation.

Liam Dawson has faced more deliveries today than he had in his entire previous nine-match ODI career.

  11. Eng 223-6published at 43 overs

Joe Root goes a-scooping again, this time eyeing up a short ball from Prasidh Krishna, but doesn't connect. He pulls the following delivery behind square for four.

It's an untidy over from Krishna. Nine from it, including a boundary and a wide.

"Could get 300 here," says the boss, Higgy.

To Aidan at 12:54, has Liam Dawson proved why he deserves his place over Rehan Ahemed now? He should have been playing for England in all formats for years.

    Rick, Portsmouth

Joe Root's been out there what seems like an age compared to how many balls he’s faced. I wonder what the biggest difference between minutes at the crease to balls faced is in an ODI?

    Jamie, Glasgow

It would be a disaster if ODIs were to be abandoned. They provide a great day out for fans and remain the primary format for club cricketers. I spent every Saturday of every summer playing for my local team. ODI is the most relatable format between club and professional cricketers.

Another pleasing scoring pattern. Single, single, dot x2.

Joe Root attempts an upright scoopy/rampy thing off the final ball of Gurnoor Brar's over and gets in a complete tangle.

Only Pat Cummins (16 times) has dismissed Joe Root more frequently than Jasprit Bumrah (15 times) has in international cricket - after surviving the last over, England's number three will be keen to see off Bumrah's final two overs and cash in elsewhere.

Joe Root was dropped early in his innings - on seven or eight - and he's made India pay.

Dawson could have been the Test number eight, spin-bowling all-rounder, etc, etc.

  18. Eng 210-6published at 41 overs

Liam Dawson plays a dinky paddle to the fine boundary for four. A lovely way to bring up the century partnership.

They want two off the final ball of the over but have to settle for one as Joe Root slips at the non-striker's end. Seven from it.

It looked a bit bleak an hour and a half ago.

  20. 200 runs

200 up for Englandpublished at 40 overs

    Eng 203-6

Jasprit Bumrah returns to the attack and almost immediately has his arms in the air in frustration, Joe Root nearly, nearly, chopping onto his stumps.

Root capitalises on his lifeline, dispatching Bumrah for a wristy boundary through mid-wicket to bring up England's 200.

    It's followed by three singles.

    10 overs to go.
