I am bemused by the selection of Tongue in white-ball cricket. I like him in Test matches because he takes wickets but his control of line and length is poor which we can't afford in T20 and ODI.

    Roy, Weston-super-Mare

If these two openers get going they will knock this score total down very quickly ! Shame - I want to see Kohli have a knock.

    Harjinder in Peterborough

  2. Ind 22-0published at 5 overs

Shubman Gill in very cautious mode here as he looks to blunt Jofra Archer.

    Three runs off the over.

England were 20-0 off about seven overs, don't forget.

It's a watchful start, you'd expect India to start in this fashion, especially with how the pitch is with the new ball.

You've also got two in form bowlers out there at the moment.

  4. Ind 19-0published at 4 overs

Josh Tongue is attempting to keep it wicket to wicket, back of a length, to Shubman Gill before the India skipper works it into the leg side deftly for a single.

Rohit Sharma content to see out three dots in the remainder of the over. He's showing a few signs of rustiness.

Starting to get fed up with all the McCullum comments. Yes, he needed to go from the Test team and yes, his style of coaching is clearly different. But he's not the one playing stupid shots and getting out, that's all on the players. Some accountability is needed.

    Ryan in Devon

I'd say PATHETIC apart from Root and Dawson. Why do we have so many batters who blatantly cannot bat?

    John, Norwich

  6. Ind 18-0published at 3 overs

    Target 259

Jofra Archer beats the outside edge of Rohit Sharma's tentative defensive poke on a couple of occasions.

Just a couple of runs off the over.

That was the widest delivery I've ever seen in an ODI.

  8. Ind 16-0published at 2 overs

A couple of balls later from Josh Tongue and a leading edge on the drive from Shubman Gill skewed away to point but just short of the diving Will Jacks.

Tongue's sixth ball is a massive wide, though, and races beyond the sprawling Jos Buttler with five runs added to India's total.

No batter has scored more runs in one-day internationals at Edgbaston than Rohit Sharma (447 runs in 6 innings, 3 x 100s), with India's opener registering two centuries here in the 2019 World Cup (104 v Bangladesh & 102 v England) and 123* against Bangladesh in the 2017 Champions Trophy.

  10. Ind 11-0published at 1.2 overs

Josh Tongue is given the new ball on his ODI debut.

His second delivery is sliding towards leg and Shubman Gill effortlessly caresses it in the leg side for four.

Shubman Gill is in very good nick. He did get a century in a one-off Test against Afghanistan recently.

Jofra Archer's final delivery is on the pads of Shubman Gill who deftly flicks it fine for four. That looked the shot of player in good touch.

One consolation that England can take is that four out of India's top six haven't played much cricket recently.

  14. Ind 1-0published at 0.2 overs

Jofra Archer starts with a wide.

Rohit Sharma attempts to leave his second delivery but the ball kisses the face of his bat while he withdraws it. However, it skids along the ground to the cordon.

This is quite an interesting score. If you had told India this is what was going to happen but with where England were having lost those wickets they will probably be a little disappointed.

Right, Jofra Archer is loosening up at the top of his mark.

Rohit Sharma has just scratched out his guard.

Root's run a ball 76 gets England up to 258

England were certainly indebted to one man today with the bat for getting them up to something like a competitive total.

You probably don't have to be a genius to work out who...

We've had such a long dry spell this summer, as a spinner I'd be rubbing my hands.

Axar Patel finished the pick of India's bowlers with 4-62.

England have two frontline spin options in Adil Rashid and Liam Dawson plus Will Jacks, Jacob Bethell and Joe Root.

Will that be the key to unlocking India's powerful top order?

Brendon McCullum has been exposed as a one-trick pony. 50 overs has more in common with the long format game and requires a coach who understands that

    Mark, York

Absolute shambles. The sooner McCullum leaves all England cricket. He is just a comedian when it comes to leading any cricket team and I bet he earns huge money for doing absolutely nothing. Come on Rob Key get rid of him completely from English cricket.
