This pair have ensured that we've got a game. India are probably still favourites but there is something out there for the spinners.

  2. Eng 196-6published at 39 overs

Liam Dawson smacks Gurnoor Brar to the mid-wicket boundary. India might want to abandon the short-ball tactic to him - he keeps picking them off.

    Six off the over.

Well played Liam Dawson. It must be very satisfying for him to be able to show what he is capable of in an England shirt.

Liam Dawson came in with England in big trouble. He's come in and give them some hope.

  5. 50 runs

50 for Liam Dawsonpublished at 38 overs

    Eng 190-6

And there it is! Liam Dawson eases through for a couple of singles to bring up his first ODI half-century off 65 balls.

A fine knock and an innings-saving partnership of 83 (98) and counting with Joe Root.

    Kieran Parmley

Joe Root has been dismissed just six times by spin in ODIs since his return to the side in 2025, averaging 96.6.

  7. Eng 186-6published at 37 overs

Liam Dawson, on 48 (63), is two runs away from his first ODI half-century and only his second in international cricket.

  8. 6 runs

    Eng 186-6published at 36.4 overs

Oh ho! Liam Dawson, down on one knee, sweeps Axar Patel for six, just clearing a leaping Arshdeep Singh on the rope.

As an aside, I'm a fan of this England shirt. Strong vibes of the circa 1998 version.

I can see Liam Dawson getting three figures here.

    Joan Dawson (no relation), Sunderland

Joe Root once again digging England out of a hole. They are in a whole world of hurt when he retires.

    Alex, London

When Root decides to retire, what are we going to do? Will it be worse than when James Anderson and Stuart Broad went?

Nowadays, 250 is deemed to be insufficient. However, with early wickets and the surface doing a bit, you've got a chance.

250 would be modest but it puts you in with a chance.

  12. Eng 177-6published at 36 overs

"Ohh bowling," says Tim, mid-lunch. Washington Sundar gets plenty of turn out of the surface and beats Liam Dawson's inside edge. The balls whistles over the bails and past the gloves of KL Rahul, stood up to the stumps. Four byes.

Four balls later, Washington offers a brief but enthusiastic lbw appeal against Dawson, down sweeping. No interest.

  13. Eng 171-6published at 35 overs

Good work from Shreyas Iyer in the deep, running around the rope and putting in a big slide to deny Liam Dawson a boundary through point.

Five from it. 15 overs to go.

Worried for England, but India are using up their top-four bowlers. Seven overs from the 5th bowler could prove crucial for England.

    Jon, Fleet

The 50 or 45 over format is one used around the country in club level cricket so it’s a game huge numbers of fans understand from playing.

    Phillip, Kent

A bit off topic, but watching Liam Dawson bat nicely here is just reminding me of the absurdity of picking Shoaib Bashir, who is far less capable in all three facets of the game than Dawson, for the last two years in Test cricket.

    Gus, Cornwall

  15. Eng 166-6published at 34 overs

Washington Sundar is recalled to the attack for the first time since the 12th over.

Joe Root and Liam Dawson take the first three balls for four runs, the former bringing out a reverse sweep. Dots to finish.

England have inched towards mediocrity and now they want to advance to something respectable.

The whole T20 v ODI debate is missing one key piece of information. ODI was invented solely to generate income for the game, which it never really has. T20 does the same job and proper cricket fans don’t care about either anyway.

    Ian, Northants

Can England bat for 50 overs?

    Matthew, Stirling

Cricket formats are different beasts; success in one doesn't guarantee success in another. You cannot judge ODI readiness by T20 flair or Test tenacity alone. The 50-over format demands a highly specific fusion: explosive T20 intent, patient Test grit, and the tactical intelligence to seamlessly switch between the two.

It's not an extraordinary innings by Root but it's an appropriate one.

  19. Eng 162-6published at 33 overs

Two dots, two singles, two dots. How pleasing.

Liam Dawson has 35 (49), Joe Root - who has been batting forever - has 31 (34).

India are using up this phase with their seamers which makes me think they will use their spinners at the end of the innings.
