250 is defendable, especially because the ball looked like it was starting to do something.

But, that India top four looks pretty scary. They may be a bit rusty but they have time to settle in.

    Thanks, Elizabeth.

There's only been five ODIs where a team have chased more than England's 258 to win at Edgbaston.

    Cause for optimism?

So India will be chasing 259 to start this three-match ODI series with a win.

Having got that far, to leave Root stranded is ridiculous.

Rashid had the most exasperating dismissal because he's capable of having a bat in his hands.

If Root stayed on strike, that's potentially another 15 runs.

Bowled him. Tongue looking to work the ball into the onside but the stumps have been clattered.

It was a pretty ghastly shot from Tongue.

Tongue b Axar 0 (Eng 258 all out)

Josh Tongue is bowled after pushing forward at a straight delivery. Middle stump splat.

England are all out for 258, with Joe Root stranded on a run-a-ball 76.

13 balls unused by the hosts but 258 should be seen as a positive from 107-6.

I take it all back about Rashid being the ideal man. I thought because he has batting attributes, he would find the way to nurdle a single and he miserably failed to do that.

You can do damage in three overs with Root but oh well.

  10. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 47.3 overs

Rashid st Rahul b Axar 1 (Eng 258-9)

Adil Rashid dances down, misses it by a mile, and stands with an air of resignation as wicketkeeper KL Rahul demolishes the stumps.

England are nine down with 2.3 overs remaining.

Gurnoor Brar will not bowl the 48th over.

Instead, Axar Patel has the ball in his hand. He has 2-61 from nine overs.

Must bat out the overs. Madness not to. We’ll get 280.

    Phillip, Kent

Should we be questioning the shot selection and decision making of the middle order? There were 26 runs for those four wickets. Everyone else seemed able to 'read the room'.

    Mick, Cambridge

Why do we need hitters in when we have Joe Root? Because one bloke doesn’t make a team. Where’s the resilience? Where’s the depth? We’ve just clocked that issue in the Test side (finally) and made changes. We need change here as well. And quickly!

A bit of a pause before the 48th over.

Gurnoor Brar pulled up in his run up, holding his right calf. He's lying on his back with his right foot on the physio's shoulder.

We're into areas of the rota that we didn't plan for.

We didn't think it would go this far.

Single, single, uppercut over the wicketkeeper for four. Joe Root was all over that Jasprit Bumrah bouncer.

Root adds another single to England's tally before Adil Rashid blocks out the remaining two.

    Oh, Dan.

One ball after tonking Axar Patel for six over mid-wicket, Jofra Archer is on his way.

He went for another big pull but didn't get the desired connection. Washington Sundar snaffled the catch at deep mid-wicket.
