    SL 155-5

Pavan Rathnayake latches on to a loose one from Overton, pulling very fine past a diving Jos Buttler for four off his second delivery.

Even so, England look to be in control here. What's a decent total on this surface?

Full credit to Adil Rashid. Had to judge it instantly and he did really well to get his hands under it. That is a great catch, they're mighty tough to take out there.

Clearly when Liyanage came out to bat, there was a look of trying to get on with it; so that wicket was crucial and Sri Lanka may decide to keep pushing it about instead and hope for bonus overs at the end.

    Janith Liyanage c Rashid b Overton 12 (SL 151-5)

    What a catch!

Just as I'm extolling the virtues of spin, Jamie Overton returns and strikes almost straight away.

Janith Liyanage flips the quickie to fine leg, and Adil Rashid races in to take an excellent catch low down in front of him.

Janith Liyanage is clearly itching to have a go at Liam Dawson but the left-armer keeps it tight and goes for just three.

So far England are doing ok and have taken their catches well but chasing here is going to be very difficult again, so no room for bad overs.

Liam Dawson needs to be a mainstay in the next few years, for both the white and red ball stuff, even if he doesn't get a bucket load of wickets, his control and economy is invaluable.

All this spin is a nice contrast to the seam-heavy Ashes, isn't it?

Rehan Ahmed is back in place of Joe Root, but Janith Liyanage is already getting into the groove, sweeping a wrong 'un over Adil Rashid at short fine leg for another boundary as nine come from the over.

This is the first time in ODIs that England have employed six spin-bowling options and only the fifth time by a non-Asian side in ODI history.

  11. SL 138-4published at 33 overs

Janith Liyanage looks keen and he comes down the wicket to lift his first high over midwicket for four.

Dawson finds the right pace, making the batter put all the effort in it. A good low catch and a massive wicket for England. Sri Lanka had a bit of a reprieve the ball before, it should have been a run out.

Dhananjaya de Silva c Root b Dawson 40 (SL 134-4)

Just after being close to being run out by Harry Brook, Dhananjaya de Silva does exit the arena after driving Liam Dawson to midwicket, only to see Joe Root take a good catch low down to his right.

Dhananjaya de Silva is trying to motor, pulling a long hop to square leg for four before sweeping very fine for another off the next.

De Silva then pinches the strike with a poke past mid-wicket from the last ball.

Another Adil Rashid over zips by, with three coming from it but they could have had two off the last. Jacob Bethell's throw was a bit sloppy but the batters failed to spot the chance for another as the ball scooted past Jos Buttler.

  16. SL 119-3published at 30 overs

Here we go - it's spinner number six as Joe Root joins the attack and straight away he gets a lot of turn outside Charith Asalanka's off stump from around the wicket.

It's a parsimonious effort from the Yorkshireman, who concedes just one from his first over.

  17. SL 118-3published at 29 overs

Charith Asalanka delicately dabs Adil Rashid fine on the off side for two, and later on Dhananjaya de Silva pulls a quicker one from outside off but again only for two.

Boundaries are like hen's teeth at the moment.

Where would we be without Adil Rashid? Such an underrated player for this side, smart, tactical and clinical with the ball. Impressive, especially since leg spin is one of the hardest deliveries to control in the game!

Jacob Bethell is back as Harry Brook mixes it up.

Charith Asalanka breaks the shackles and flips a loose one very fine for four, Liam Dawson slides into the boundary sponge but cannot stop the first boundary in 55 balls.

England are looking to keep more overs of Adil Rashid in their hand for the second half of the innings when the batters look to attack a bit more. In the first ODI, Rashid had already bowled seven overs by this stage, only four today so far.
