Rehan Ahmed's first ball in a World Cup and he's got a wicket. Not one he'll write home about - the grin on his face, he knows he's fortunate.

It wasn't a brilliant ball - short - but Ravindra picks out Jacob Bethell in the deep. Smiles all round. A promising partnership comes to an end.

    Ravindra c Bethell b Ahmed 11 (NZ 97-3)

Rehan Ahmed strikes with his first ball at a World Cup!

In years to come he'll tell the story of a brilliant turning delivery to take the edge... in reality, it was a bit of a drag down that Rachin Ravindra pulls out to deep mid-wicket.

It's a good tumbling catch by Jacob Bethell in the deep and England have the breakthrough they were after.

That is a terrific shot. It was excellent placement.

This partnership is just simmering at the moment.

  5. NZ 97-2published at 11 overs

    Phillips 21, Ravindra 11

The suggestion was that is was unlikely that Jacob Bethell would bowl today due to a slightly hand injury but here he is.

Not the best of starts, a low full toss that Rachin Ravindra hammers down the ground for four.

Four more. Top shot from Glenn Phillips. Driven all along the ground and just past the stumps at the non-striker's end to split the fielders at long-off and long-on.

Good over for the Black Caps, 13 from it.

At the halfway stage, New Zealand are handily placed.

It's not what the Pakistan fans want but they haven't got away from England.

  8. NZ 84-2published at 10 overs

Swing and a miss from Rachin Ravindra as he tries to pull a big-turning delivery from Will Jacks.

I think he might have been through the shot slightly too early but it did turn a long way.

Glenn Phillips does find the boundary a couple of balls later with an outside edge that is too fine for short third to cut it off.

In the slot, a bit of flight - Glenn Phillips needed no extra invitation.

A very dangerous cricketer when he gets going.

  10. 6 runs

    NZ 77-2published at 9 overs

Glenn Phillips picks Adil Rashid's googly and launches the ball over the leg side into the stands.

That's the shorter side but it was still a mighty hit.

He punishes a drag down next ball, too, pulling it into the gap for four.

England have fought back nicely since the powerplay with those two wickets.

It's Glenn Phillips and Rachin Ravindra at the crease now for New Zealand so it doesn't get any easier for the bowlers.

You could hear the "oh no" straight away from Finn Allen. He hit it straight to Jacob Bethell.

It's the bigger boundary but he was nowhere near. Bethell is stood eight, nine yards in.

Safe hands from Bethell at mid-wicket. Both openers are gone in two overs. Spin has done it.

Will Jacks' purple patch in this tournament continues.

  15. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 7.4 overs

    Allen c Bethell b Jacks 29 (NZ 66-2)

Will Jacks strikes in his first over.

Finn Allen flicks the ball leg side and immediately knows he's not got enough on it.

Catching practice for Jacob Bethell, about 10 yards off the rope at deep mid-wicket.

Spin is doing the trick for England and both New Zealand openers are gone.

That was a much tighter decision than I thought based on the reaction of the batter. He had his foot on the line but you've got to have something behind it.

Clever bowling. 44mph from Rashid. He took the pace right off.

  18. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 7 overs

Seifert st Buttler b Rashid 35 (NZ 64-1)

Six and out for Tim Seifert!

The New Zealand opener had launched the previous ball over deep mid-wicket for six and aims another violent shot leg side.

But the canny Adil Rashid has taken all the pace off the ball, Seifert misses it by a mile and then overbalances slightly and Jos Buttler whips the bails off quick as a flash.

Seifert walks off so clearly thinks he's well gone but replays show it was actually very tight. Still out, though.

A rare wickeless first six overs for England with the ball, since the start of 2025 only once before have they failed to take a wicket inside the first six overs of the innings (1st T20I vs Ireland, Malahide).

Here comes Adil Rashid. This should tell us just how much this surface is going to turn.

Pushed for a single first ball.
