Glos 14-1 - need 229 to make Middlesex bat again

Slow and steady might not win the race, in these circumstances, but it might help avoid losing it.

Joe Phillips and Ben Charlesworth have helped the visitors put on 14 runs in eight overs with four of those coming from a lovely cut past point from Charlesworth.

There are 48 overs left in the day and 96 on the slate for tomorrow.

They still need 215 runs to make Middlesex bat for a second time.

WICKETpublished at 15:02 BST 5 April

Bess lbw van der Gugten 32 (Glamorgan 302 v Yorks 177-7)

Timm van der Gugten angles one in towards Dom Bess's pads, he tries to play it towards mid-wicket but fails to make contact and is gone. This has been an excellent day so far for Glamorgan.

  3. 500 up for Warwickshirepublished at 15:00 BST 5 April

    Warwickshire 500-7 v Surrey 328

Despite losing a couple of wickets in quick succession the Bears are continuing to build a formidable total.

With two attacking batters currently at the crease in Kai Smith and county debutant Jordan Thompson the game could move quickly one way or the other in the remaining overs before tea.

  4. Postpublished at 14:59 BST 5 April

    Leics 245 v Sussex 361 & 314-7

A new ball is due after this over - which will be bowled by Yadvinder Singh. Fynn Hudson-Prentice gets away with a big inside edge which runs away fine for four. The lead is 430.

  5. Postpublished at 14:59 BST 5 April

    Northants 258 v Lancs 384 & 70-5

Luke Wells and George Balderson have steadied the ship for Lancs after Harry Conway's did his best to sink them and the lead is edging up.

Lancs lead is 196 with five wickets in the tank and, given what we have seen so far in this match, another hundred could be enough to win it.

  6. wicket

    WICKET - NOTTS 338 ALL-OUTpublished at 14:59 BST 5 April

    Pennington c Kohler-Cadmore b Ball (Somerset 347 v Notts 338)

    We have ourselves a shoot-out.

Jake Ball picks up his second scalp as Dillon Pennington tries a drive only to flash an edge into the breadbasket of Tom Kohler-Cadmore at first slip.

Notts have to settle for two batting points and concede a first innings deficit of nine after an innings which was just three balls longer than their hosts.

In theory 56 overs remain in the day, 96 tomorrow. This is one is bubbling up nicely.

  7. wicket

WICKET And another!published at 14:55 BST 5 April

    Woakes b. Albert 4 (Warwickshire 482-6 v Surrey 328)

Chris Woakes gets big cheers as he cuts his first ball to the boundary.

But in the next over spinner Ralphie Albert finds an inside edge and bowls the former England all-rounder. Not a bad maiden championship victim for the teenager.

So two quick wickets gives Surrey hope of keeping the first innings deficit down. It's currently 153.

A very confused Surrey fan here. As much as I don't want them to, why has there been no declaration from Warwickshire? They have a lead of over 150 and there's only a day and a half left. You still need to bowl Surrey out, and possibly chase!

    Kian, Chessington

I'm presuming Hampshire were all out celebrating Saints' FA Cup win last night, based on their performance. I know I've only just got up

    Ian, Southampton

Glad you enjoyed it, Ian. Much of the country seem to have done...

  9. wicket

WICKETpublished at 14:52 BST 5 April

    Lord c Kohler-Cadmore b Ball 22 (Somerset 347 v Notts 332-9)

Jake Ball has his first wicket of the summer.

After an encouraging 22 Rob Lord flashes an ill-advised drive at one which he could really have left outside off and offers a low chance to Tom Kohler-Cadmore, who holds on this time, low to his left at first slip.

Lord cuts a frustrated figure as he trudges off.

Dillon Pennington is the last man in. Notts trail by 15.

  10. wicket

WICKETpublished at 14:51 BST 5 April

    Webster lbw Lawes 53 (Warwickshire 477/6 v Surrey 328

In the same over he brought up his 50 Beau Webster is trapped on the back foot to be lbw giving Tom Lawes his first wicket.

  11. wicket

WICKETpublished at 14:50 BST 5 April

    Weatherley c Pepper b Porter 4 (Hants 156 & 8-1 v Essex 461-7d)

Having enforced the follow-on Essex have early vindication with the wicket of Joe Weatherley in the first over.

That is a nicely pitched delivery from Jamie Porter that draws the opener forward tempting him into a cover drive but just brushes the edge.

It is a regulation grab behind the stumps for Michael Pepper who now has a fifth catch of the match.

Stand-in skipper Sam Cook has the ball in hand and Nick Gubbins in his sights and he beats the edge with his fifth ball.

    Warning signs are everywhere.

  12. wicket

WICKETpublished at 14:50 BST 5 April

    Carson lbw Patel 85 (Leics 245 v Sussex 361 & 301-7)

No declaration by Sussex yet as Jack Carson departs at Grace Road.

He tries to work the ball to leg but makes no contact with the bat and the umpire sends him on his way after a 140-ball innings featuring seven boundaries.

  13. Postpublished at 14:47 BST 5 April

    Somerset 347 v Notts 325-8

Jack Leach is into the attack in sun-soaked Somerset and beats Rob Lord's bat with one which keeps a touch low.

Notts trail by 20, two wickets in hand and 23 runs needed in 10 overs to find a third batting point, something their hosts did not manage to do.

  14. Postpublished at 14:44 BST 5 April

    Glamorgan 302 v Yorks 153-6

Things have certainly not gone according to plan for Yorkshire today, thanks to Mason Crane, but they are at least now numerically safe from the possibility of having to follow-on.

Matthew Revis is 22 not out and acting captain Dom Bess has 14.

Presumably Bess isn't 'acting' any more now that Jonny Bairstow is out of the game with a thumb injury, he's doing it for real.

  15. wicket

WICKETpublished at 14:41 BST 5 April

Bancroft b Morgan 0 (Glos 1-1 - need 229 to make Middlesex bat again)

    Breakthrough for the hosts.

18-year-old Sebastian Morgan produces a corker of a delivery to beat the bat of Cameron Bancroft and smash the top of off-stump, sending bails flying and uprooting his off-stump to send him on his way for no score.

Middlesex have their tails up and are on the right track for an innings victory to open the season.

Joe Phillips joins Ben Charlesworth in the middle.

  16. Postpublished at 14:41 BST 5 April

    Leics 245 v Sussex 361 & 298-6

Rishi Patel now turning his arm over for Leicestershire and Jack Carson eases him down to third man for four runs - he is 82 not out.

"Sussex holding all the cards here in terms of how many runs they want," says BBC Sussex's Adrian Harms.

  17. Postpublished at 14:41 BST 5 April

Gloucestershire 1-0 - need 229 to make Middlesex bat again

Slow going with just a leg-bye in the opening three overs for the visitors as they battle to save the game at sun-drenched HQ.

  18. Postpublished at 14:38 BST 5 April

    Somerset 347 v Notts 325-8

Olly Stone gets off the mark at the 12th time of asking with a glorious cover drive to the rope off Jake Ball.

That's some way to get off the mark for the new season.

Notts are ticking towards parity and still have a dozen overs to try and get a third batting point, at least...

Well done Warwickshire on maximum batting bonus points, now it's time to get to 500 and think of the declaration.

    Dr Prit, Sennen Cove

I'd be all for DRS, it is generally used so much better than its footballing cousin. Unfortunately it's expensive to run and the County Championship is not, on average, suitably profitable.

    Dave, Chelmsford

Very impressed with the response from Glammy after being 28-4 on Friday Evening. Hopefully Mason does not bowl too well and gets himself called up for England!.
