  1. Early lunch at Tauntonpublished at 12:51 BST 5 April

    Somerset 347 v Notts 274-6

The sun is back out again but the umpires have taken the decision to take lunch a few minutes early.

Somerset have picked up three big wickets this morning, with Alfie Ogborne ousting Kyle Verreynne and Joe Clarke in the space of four balls with a couple of snorters before the rain arrived, and though the Champions have picked up a first batting bonus point of the season, their hopes of a big first innings lead appear to be dwindling.

  2. Latest from Lord'spublished at 12:50 BST 5 April

    Middx 445-9 dec v Glos 194-7

Craig Miles tries to mow former Gloucestershire spinner Zafar Gohar over mid-off but doesn't get enough on it and Naavya Sharma takes a comfortable catch.

Graeme van Buuren is still there for the visitors and square cuts Sebastian Morgan for four before trying to repeat the shot, resulting in an edge which flicks the fingertips of keeper Joe Cracknell on the way to the rope at third man.

  3. Postpublished at 12:49 BST 5 April

    Hants 122-8 v Essex 461-7d

Eddie Jack drops down on to one knee and heaves a well-struck shot off Simon Harmer for six.

The tail is wagging for Hants and showing that the older ball is not quite as dangerous.

Re 12:36, it still baffles me why the majority of popular weather-dependent sports in the world were invented or popularised in the UK. Cricket is the most volatile sport on the planet in terms of climate, and it's mostly played in the UK and places with monsoon seasons worldwide...

  5. Lunch at Derbypublished at 12:44 BST 5 April

    Derbyshire 625-8 dec v Worcestershire 155-3

Rain returns at Derby and we are set for an early lunch.

Just 10.4 overs bowled this morning and Worcestershire have added 42 runs for the loss of opener Dan Lategan.

He was run out for 89 and Adam Hose (22) and Brett D'Oliveira (three) are now together for the visitors, who trail by 470.

  6. wicket

WICKETpublished at 12:40 BST 5 April

    Wharton lbw Crane 0 (Glamorgan 302 v Yorks 87-3)

Inspired move by Glamorgan skipper Kiran Carlson to bring on Mason Crane and he has his second wicket of the over as a well-disguised googly traps James Wharton in front.

Out comes Will Luxton, who was drafted into the game as a substitute this morning because of Jonny Bairstow's thumb injury.

  7. Play to resume at Edgbastonpublished at 12:38 BST 5 April

The sun is shining at Edgbaston but not keeping the fielders warm

That could be my first correct prediction of the season. They haven't been off long and play is resuming at Edgbaston with 20 minutes to go to lunch.

Six overs will have to be made up at the end of the day as Beau Webster and Ed Barnard march back to the crease.

  8. rain stops play

Rain stops play at Tauntonpublished at 12:38 BST 5 April

    Somerset 347 v Notts 274-6

Somerset, and Alfie Ogborne in particular, will not be happy but the rain has swept back in and we're off again.

It's been a brilliant stop-start morning for the hosts so far. They are thinking about a first-innings lead at this point.

The wind is so strong the covers are being blown back towards the stands as the ground staff tussle with them.

  9. Postpublished at 12:37 BST 5 April

    Hants 111-8 v Essex 461-7d

Two fours for Kyle Abbott as he becomes the second highest scorer on the Hants scorecard with 22.

The first is a slightly fortunate inside edge to the square leg boundary off Simon Harmer but the second is nicely timed, dancing a couple of steps down the track and launching it to the mid on rope.

Storm Dave being a great twelfth man for Kent!!

    Scott, Kent

Durham got shafted by the weather last season too and contributed to relegation. There should be reserve days in the CC.

    Jonathan, Hartlepool

Feels hard to factor in with the current schedule, but do you agree? Or do we have to accept that sometimes Mother Nature will have a big influence in our sport?

  11. wicket

WICKETpublished at 12:33 BST 5 April

    Whiteman lbw Crane 48 (Glamorgan 302 v Yorks 87-2)

We spoke too soon by suggesting Sam Whiteman was on course for a fifty in his first Championship innings for Yorkshire.

He goes right back onto his stumps, but Mason Crane finds a little bit of turn to beat his defensive stroke and there is no doubt about the decision.

  12. wicket

WICKETpublished at 12:33 BST 5 April

    Clarke b Ogborne 92 (Somerset 347 v Notts 269-6)

Alfie Ogborne is in the absolute zone.

More pace and swing from the left-armer and this one comes back through the gate of Joe Clarke and splatters middle and leg. The key man departs for a fine 92.

Both set-batters gone in the space of four balls and Somerset are on top.

Liam Patterson-White joins Lyndon James in the middle.

  13. wicket

WICKETpublished at 12:30 BST 5 April

Lategan run out 89 (Derbys 625-8 dec v Worcs 142-3)

    What a shame.

Dan Lategan plays Mohammad Abbas out into the covers but fatally hesitates over whether to take a second run and is beaten by Zak Chappell's throw to keeper Brooke Guest despite a despairing drive.

The 19-year-old batted for 195 minutes, faced 153 balls and hit 12 fours. No century but he looks a real prospect for the Pears.

  14. wicket

WICKETpublished at 12:30 BST 5 April

    Verreynne lbw b Ogborne 25 (Somerset 347 v Notts 268-5

    Plumb as they come.

Alfie Ogborne's second ball with the new ball swings back late and straightens up past Kyle Verreyne's straight drive and thumps him on the shin in front of middle stump.

Not going to call it a drop, because it was incredibly hard, but Ogborne almost had Joe Clarke from the previous ball as he stretched out his left hand in the follow through and got his fingertips to an uppish drive back down the ground.

Either way, he has a wicket now and Lyndon James joins Clarke (92*) in the middle.

  15. Postpublished at 12:30 BST 5 April

    Hants 96-8 v Essex 461-7d

Simon Harmer is on as Essex turn to spin to try and get these last two wickets. He is wearing sunglasses and a snood as he sends down his first six balls for no runs.

  16. Postpublished at 12:30 BST 5 April

    Glamorgan 302 v Yorks 87-1

Glamorgan call up leg-spinner Mason Crane for his first over of the morning and Sam Whiteman paddle sweeps for four. The left-hander is closing in on a fifty in his first Championship innings for Yorkshire.

  17. Postpublished at 12:27 BST 5 April

    Leics 245 v Sussex 361 & 202-6

Easy pickings for Tom Price who clips an unthreatening delivery from Yadvinder Singh through the leg-side for four.

That's 200 up for Sussex in their second innings and they lead by 318.

Seeing TRJ get yet another Middlesex 5 wicket haul in the first game of the season, is just the hope I need for the summer! Can't believe it's 10 years since his hat-trick won the County Championship now.

    Stuart, Camberley

Clearly I'm glad no one was hurt at CLS with Storm Dave clattering the ground like a Rawalpindi Express delivery, but it does show how promotion from CC D2 can turn on a knife-edge with early season weather whilst 100 gets height of, likely, ideal summer weather.

  19. wicket

NORTHANTS 258 ALL OUTpublished at 12:26 BST 5 April

    Conway lbw b Bailey 20 (Northants 258 v Lancs 384)

The new ball does the trick and Northants last wicket partnership is over as Tom Bailey pins Harry Conway bang in front of middle and the finger does up.

Lewis McManus finishes unbeaten on 75 and that last wicket partnership of 60 has eked out a batting bonus point for the hosts.

Who knows how important that might be both in this match and in the context of the season.

  20. wicket

WICKETpublished at 12:22 BST 5 April

    Yusuf b Mulder 12 (Hants 91-8 v Essex 461-7d)

    Wiaan MulderImage source, Shutterstock

That is a fourth seamer in the wickets column and that was a very decent ball from Wiaan Mulder which does for Codi Yusuf.

It has angled back pretty sharply and beaten his rushed defences.

    Hants are reeling.
