He's yet to get off the mark after facing six deliveries.

  13. 'It was a real mix of emotions' - Bakerpublished at 10:55 BST 17 May

    Hants 214 v Notts 124-3

Sonny Baker warming up before Saturday's playImage source, Shutterstock

It has been a whirlwind few days for Hampshire fast bowler Sonny Baker following his call-up to the England Test squad.

The big news came on the eve of his side's latest County Championship match after a difficult campaign for the south coast side who sit bottom of Division One with four defeats from five.

They looked to be in big trouble on day one before recovering to 214 in difficult batting conditions.

Baker then picked up a wicket as the Hampshire bowlers - and the weather - kept the Notts reply in check, as the visitors closed the day three down and 90 behind.

"It is a dream come true [to get my maiden Test call-up]," Baker said.

"I found out about 10 minutes before I was coming in to have a team review of our season. It was a fairly morbid conversation.

"It was a real mix of emotions."

  14. Surrey fight back on rain-hit day twopublished at 10:53 BST 17 May

    Yorkshire 486 v Surrey 17-0

Surrey took the remaining six Yorkshire first-innings before lunch to eventually bowl them out for 486 during a rain-interrupted second day at Headingley.

Jordan Clark's terrific catch at wide mid-on meant Jonny Bairstow could only add six to his overnight total - making 120 - before fellow centurion Adam Lyth was caught at first slip for 141 as Yorkshire picked up four batting points.

As Rory Burns and Dom Sibley walked out to bat at Headingley to start Surrey's first-innings, rain brought them straight back to the pavilion, and once it had passed the Brown Caps were only able to get through four overs before more showers turned up as the umpires called stumps at around 17:30 BST.

"I don’t think it’s [rain] ruined it, no. I think it puts the pressure on them. If you think you're nearly 500 behind, you know you’ve got to bat for a day and a bit in order to stay in the game, there’s been plenty in it all game," Bairstow said last night.

"If we bowl well and turn up tomorrow, you never know - bowl them out for 200 or 250 - it's game on."

Making up for lost time yesterday, we are set for 104 overs today, should we get a full day's play in, that is.

  15. 'Their batting was remarkable'published at 10:51 BST 17 May

    Warks 123-6 v Glam 360

Glamorgan’s bowlers have put the Welsh side in a very strong position heading into day three, with Warwickshire in big danger of facing the follow-on.

They are still 237 runs in arrears with only four first winnings wickets in hand after strike bowler Timm van der Gugten set the tone, sending down eight maidens and taking 2-21 from 15 tight overs.

But he was also quick to praise the contribution of batters Kiran Carlson (85) and Ben Kellaway (139) who put on a potentially game-changing 194 for the third wicket.

“The first target was to get that 350 with the bat which we did and then I thought all the bowlers bowled really well,” van der Gugten said.

“We've kind of got a template of how to bowl this year and if we stick to that, like we did today, we create enough chances.

"The way Kiran and Ben batted yesterday was phenomenal - to go from 0-2 to 194-2 was quite remarkable.”

  16. Forecast more promising in Southportpublished at 10:49 BST 17 May

    Lancashire 28-0 v Worcestershire 270

After spectators at Southport did not see a single ball bowled yesterday, those that have tickets for day three for the match between Lancashire and Worcestershire should have better luck.

The sun is currently out over the coast, with occasional showers - a typical May day in the North West.

Lancashire trail the Pears by 242 runs with all their first-innings still in hand and will look to try and attack the day having lost back-to-back matches in Division Two as their promotion push has hit the skids in recent weeks.

We are due 104 overs today, making up for lost time yesterday, but that is probably a bit optimistic with rain due at some stage later.

  17. Sussex in the spotlightpublished at 10:47 BST 17 May

    Somerset 526-8 dec v Sussex 22-1

A slightly ironic header given the farcical end to day two at Taunton, when a floodlight failure ended play one ball into the sixth over of the Sussex innings.

Craig Overton was the wicket-taker, trapping Tom Haines lbw for six.

He managed that shortly after hitting his second century of the season and adding 146 runs with Tom Abell, who made his third hundred of a stellar season in which he's averaging 77.

As was the case yesterday, the local forecast is patchy. It worsens considerably in the afternoon, raising the chance of an awkward mini session or two for Sussex.

  18. 'Sam can keep the nightwatchman job' - Porterpublished at 10:45 BST 17 May

    Essex 281-8 v Leicestershire 333

Jamie Porter raises his bat after reaching 50 for EssexImage source, Shutterstock

Essex seam bowler Jamie Porter insisted he had no interest in becoming the team's nightwatchman on a regular basis after marking his 178th first-class innings with a maiden half-century.

He was sent in at number three at the end of day one against Leicestershire after fellow paceman Sam Cook lasted only two balls.

"I’ve done no batting in the nets. I think it is pretty simple for me, just try and keep the good ball out and score off the bad one. It doesn’t need to be any more complicated than that," said Porter.

“Sam can keep the nightwatchman job. There’s absolutely no competition for it from me. When I get out there I’ll try my best to give everything I’ve got. But beyond that, no, Sam can have it."

He was eventually bowled for 52 by Ben Mike who said: "When Porter got into the 30s and there was a loud cheer, I thought, ‘Surely that’s not his career-best. He’s been around for a long time'.

"Then when we came off for lunch we checked and it was. Credit to him, he played well and stuck to his guns.”

  19. Gloucestershire under the pump despite leadpublished at 10:43 BST 17 May

    Gloucs 154 & 21-3 v Northants 127 - leading by 48 runs

Any kind of first innings lead is handy on this erratic hybrid surface that has seen seam movement and steepling bounce on a length.

There was sharp swing generated by Matt Taylor on Saturday evening too, notably when he bowled Lewis McManus on a drive, and finished with 5-36.

Batting was no easier when Gloucestershire began their second innings with two tail enders pressed in to opening duty - Craig Miles and Will Williams.

Neither lasted long and Miles had to call for a runner - the already dismissed Williams - after running hard to take a second run and cramping.

Ben Charlesworth was also out cheaply and now Gloucestershire captain Cameron Bancroft will try to set a platform with Ollie Price.

  20. Delayed start at Beckenhampublished at 10:40 BST 17 May

    Kent 523 v Durham 173-5

    Ben StokesImage source, Getty Images

There has been heavy rain overnight at Worsley Bridge Road so we are going to have to wait to see what kind of batting form England captain Ben Stokes is in.

He is eight not out and partner David Bedingham has 72 to his name, an innings which has included a six and eight fours so far.

Team-mate Matthew Potts took his 300th first-class wicket yesterday, finishing with 6-92 to finally bring Kent's first innings to an end.

"Someone mentioned that in the dressing room but I had no idea that I was near that. It’s obviously nice to achieve that milestone. I always like to put a big hand up when the going gets tough," he said.
