Three more runs added to the scoreboard and it brings us to the end of the powerplay.

If you were wondering, Sri Lanka were 49-0 at this point of their innings.

It’s very difficult to win at a format which is now relegated to second tier status in the domestic game. I fear this will bite more and more as time goes on.

  3. Eng 38-1published at 9 overs

England find some merry at last as Pramod Madushan is reintroduced into the attack.

Joe Root clips it off the pads for the first four of the over and then stands firm to hammer one behind point for another.

A total of 10 runs from that over. Time for England to pick up the pace?

  4. Eng 28-1published at 8 overs

More disciplined bowling from off-spinner Dhananjaya de Silva, keeping England tightly pinned down.

Sri Lanka are not making this chase any easier for the tourists.

Genuinely impressed people still have the energy to write in about Crawley. The whole issue is exhausting.

  6. Eng 26-1published at 7 overs

Another tight over from Asitha Fernando with just one run from it.

He’s putting together a spell that Lasith Malinga, watching on from the stands, would certainly approve of.

And England are being pushed firmly onto the back foot.

Ben Duckett has inside/bottom-edged three deliveries against the pacers today. He will need to get accustomed to the pace and bounce of this pitch before he plays his shots. Similar length deliveries in the Tests in Australia were reaching almost 40cm higher at the stumps. It is also compounded by the fact that the Sri Lankan pacers have a much lower release height in comparison.

Of course it’ll be a curse to again say Root appears on a different planet! At least different pitch…whilst Duckett is trying to find timing by reversing and so far struggling.

  9. Eng 25-1published at 6 overs

The dot balls have been piling up for England and Ben Duckett tries to reverse sweep and almost drags it onto the stumps.

He tries to improvise again and gets hit on the helmet - needing the mandatory concussion check.

But some pressure is relieved in the final delivery as he punishes a poor ball from Dhananjaya de Silva for a boundary through the off side.

  10. Eng 19-1published at 5 overs

Another good over from Asitha Fernando.

But the one time the Sri Lanka pacer goes a bit full, those of an England persuasion in Colombo are treated to a brilliant cover drive from Joe Root that runs away for four runs.

Look how wide that delivery was which Zak Crawley chased - and fell to!

Crawley surely has to be dropped from all formats following this tour. Absolutely incapable of not fishing outside his off stump. It's like groundhog day.

It's a brilliant over from Pramod Madushan that had Ben Duckett in all sorts of trouble.

The England batter almost drags a shot onto his stumps and two balls later, he edges one again just short of wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis.

Duckett finishes the over with another inside edge - this time onto his pads.

  14. Eng 14-1published at 3 overs

Joe Root is off the mark immediately with a single towards third.

Can he be England’s saviour again, as he has been so many times throughout his career?

I have nothing against him but outside of last year’s Hundred competition, Zak Crawley has done little in white-ball cricket. Surely there is an opener in county cricket that has shone in the Blast or One-Day Cup!

    Izzy Jones-Owoade, Surrey

I have seen tailenders with better technique than Zak Crawley. How does he keep getting game time at international level?!

Not good from Crawley chasing a wide ball. Crawley never looked confident there.

    Zak Crawley departs.

The England opener goes after a wide delivery from Asitha Fernando but can only find a nick to the wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis.

Not the start the tourists wanted and it brings Joe Root to the crease.

  18. Eng 11-0published at 2.1 overs

Asitha Fernando looking to build on his maiden over, but he dismissed through point by Ben Duckett for his first boundary.

  19. Eng 7-0published at 2 overs

Another good over in the making - this time from Pramod Madushan.

But that was until Zak Crawley punched his final delivery for boundary through mid-wicket.

Both England openers are now off the mark.

Excellent bowling performance, brilliant from Dawson and Rashid in particular. Interested to see how Crawley and Duckett approach the powerplay - would love to see England chase this down before my teachers catch me watching it again at school!
