Jamie Overton starts Asitha Fernando's over by hammering the ball powerfully through the covers for four.

Seamer Fernando's penultimate ball is a big full toss and Overton doesn't need asking twice, he launches it over mid-wicket for six.

Another expensive over from Fernando - 14 runs from it - but England's required run-rate still ticks up from 14.75 to 15 runs an over.

Are we now just really bad at ODI cricket because we don’t play it outside of internationals anymore?

Fielding is one of those things that makes a difference to any circket team. Sri Lanka have been so proficient on the field today. That's another absolute stunner.

    Dawson c Dhananjaya b Madushan 2 (Eng 213-9)

    Superb catch.

Liam Dawson tries to cut hard with his head thrown back and Dhananjaya de Silva takes an excellent grab, diving to his left at backward point.

Two wickets in three balls for Pramod Madushan, and England are nearly done.

    Buttler b Madushan 19 (Eng 211-8)

    Six and out!

Jos Buttler hits his first boundary off his 19th ball, lofting Pramod Madushan over long-off.

The England wicketkeeper goes to heave the next ball down the ground and is bowled by a slower ball sent down from round the wicket wide of the crease.

Jamie Overton pushes the final ball of the over to point, but can't get a single.

That clever catch from Wellalage put an end to a very promising knock from Rehan Ahmed and is part of the story of Sri Lanka holding their nerve and throwing England off course.

  12. wicket

    Ahmed c Wellalage b Vandersay 27 (Eng 203-7)

    It's judged clean!

Dunith Wellalage took the catch at wide long-off, swiftly lobbed the ball in the air as he fell over the boundary rope, jumped back onto the field and collected the ball.

Rehan's enterprising cameo comes to an end, and the faintest of England's hopes likely go with him.

This is what's so outstanding in the field of the modern game. The ability to keep a cool head on the boundary edge.

Another big shot from Rehan Ahmed!

He slams Jeffrey Vandersay high in the air and Dunith Wellalage takes a superb catch right on the rope, but has his foot made contact with the boundary?

    The umpires will review.

Rehan Ahmed up the order for me in future. I know today was a straight swap for Jacks, but we need some positivity up top.

  17. Eng 200-6published at 44 overs

    72 runs needed

Three consecutive boundaries for Rehan Ahmed!

Asitha Fernando returns for our first sight of seam in a while, and over-steps his second delivery for a no ball.

He then struggles to land his yorkers, with Rehan taking full advantage.

The England spinner thwacks a full toss over the covers, finds a gap at mid-wicket despite not making a clean connection, and cracks the final ball of the over through point.

Rehan has 27 from 20 balls, England need exact two runs a ball from here.

Well if there ever was a time for Rehan Ahmed to put his name fully into conversations for full-time starter now is the time to do it! Luckily he’s got arguably England greatest-ever limited-overs batter to help him!
