What's interesting to see is some of the skaters at 1500m prefer to keep swinging one of their arms. In the longer distances, they tend to be keeping the upper body very still, a lot of core stability and trying to be as aerodynamic as possible.

What we'll see later on with the skaters who are ranked higher and going for the medals, they tend to have two arms still up their back, which requires a lot more core stability.

Ten of the 30 skaters have completed their runs and South Korea's Chung Jae-won currently leads with a time of 1:45.80.

A reminder that the higher-ranked skaters are scheduled to go off in the latter part of the competition, including the USA's Jordan Stolz, who has already won gold over 500m and 1000m at these Winter Olympics.

Another blanked end for Team GB. They keep the hammer going into the penultimate end and are in good shape, but things are still not going well on Sheet A.

The United States are still leading Switzerland 5-3 with two ends left and the hammer in their favour...

Skaters only race once and it's a time-trial format, so the quickest to complete three and three-quarter laps of the 400m track wins.

Skaters race in pairs and will switch between the outer lane and inner lane each lap to ensure they cover the same distance.

The order they race is based on rankings in the World Cup standings, which means the faster competitors are likely to be among the last to skate.

  7. USA's Stolz goes for third goldpublished at 15:25 GMT 19 February

Jordan Stolz has already won the 500m and 1000m at these Winter Olympics and goes for a golden treble in today's 1500m in Milan.

The 21-year-old is aiming to become the first man to complete that particular trio of wins since fellow American Eric Heiden did so in 1980.

Stolz, who has won all five World Cup races he has competed in over 1500m this season, goes in the last of the 15 heats.

Team GB are on Sheet D, about 20 yards away from Sheet A, where the United States are playing.

They'll be able to see the scoreboards, though, and will know exactly what the state of play is. Rebecca Morrison's rink just need to focus on getting their win and see where it takes them.

Team GB blank the seventh end, so they keep the hammer and the lead into the eighth.

There's a creeping inevitability that it won't matter, though... the US have just gone 5-2 up on Switzerland. Unless the Swiss win, it's over for GB.

And we've also heard from Spain's Oriol Cardona Coll, who was victorious in the men's ski mountaineering event to become the sport's first male Olympic gold medallist.

On winning gold: "The feeling is amazing. I've been dreaming about being here, about winning the race a lot of times and finally the dream has come true.

"Winning this gold after so many years, it means a lot for us as a country. Also means a lot for the ski mountaineering family to be here."

On his thoughts when he crossed the finish line: "Many things. First of all to all the people who came here from Spain, all the people watching from home, and especially to my grandfather who died a few years ago. I've been thinking about him a lot and this victory is for him."

On adding an Olympic title to his world title: "To win a world championship last year was amazing but to have an Olympic medal, the feeling is multiplied by a lot."

Switzerland's Marianne Fatton has been speaking after her historic ski mountaineering gold medal win.

It was an emotional day for the 30-year-old, who becomes the sport's first Olympic champion and shed tears of joy on the podium.

"I just realised what I did today," she said. "It's amazing, because it's my first podium this year in sprint. So it was hard to believe.

"It's a magical day. It's history for our sport, and for us as athletes, and it's wonderful.

"I just trusted my body. And I said to myself 'you know what to do, and you just have to flow with it, and it's OK'. I was totally exhausted after the race."

What are curling shoes made of when one slides and the other grips? - Stuart in Bognor Regis

Most players wear either bespoke curling shoes or adapted trainers, but the key thing is the quarter-inch Teflon plate on the bottom of the sliding foot - left for right-handers and vice versa - to help them glide.

Sometimes that will be a single plate right the length of the sole, but most elite players will have two separate discs to allow a bit more movement of the foot.

The other foot will just have a grippy rubber sole, principally so you don't fall over.
