Did USA have too many men on the ice there? Canada certainly think so as the puck gets trapped near the USA bench.

Their appeals fall on deaf ears, so they go up the other end and rain more efforts on USA's goal. The puck is clawed off the line by Charlie McAvoy. .

Oh Nathan MacKinnon, how have you missed that? Wide open at the back post, goal gaping, but he finds the side-netting.

The puck is immediately up the other end and Canada netminder Jordan Binnington is forced into a huge save!

The last Canadian shot flew over the perspex barriers, fortunately there is also a large net behind each end to prevent spectators getting hurt.

By the way, if the puck lands in the stands, you don't have to throw it back like in football.

I used to have a puck collected from a Whitley Bay Warriors game when I was a kid. Sadly that has been lost to the mists of time.

It's been all Canada in the opening five minutes of the third period but Connor Hellebuyck has come up with four big saves.

They need to make this pressure and possession count because USA look so dangerous on the counter. Canada netminder Jordan Binnington has already bailed his side out once in this period, reacting quickly to deny a deflected shot from Jake Guentzel.

Another big save from Connor Hellebuyck, finding himself one on one facing Macklin Celebrini and standing tall!

Every Canadian here in Santagiulia - and probably around the world - was on their feet, convinced that was a goal.

A magnificent piece of goalkeeping from Connor Hellebuyck.

Devon Toews had done so much good stuff at the start of this third period, camping himself on the blue line and repeatedly sending the puck towards USA's goal.

After dropping the puck to Mitch Marner, he ghosts into the crease and has the goal wide open as it's played back into him... I don't know how, but Connor Hellebuyck has kept it out! Wow.

We're off! And immediately, Canada's Macklin Celebrini is making inroads. He's been so impressive.

The puck has just pinged off the back of the head of USA netminder Connor Hellebuyck.

If we are still level at the end of the third period, the game goes to overtime with each team fielding three skaters and one goalkeeper.

There is no shootout in the gold medal game so overtime periods of 20 minutes will be played until a goal is scored.

Politicians love jumping on the bandwagon when big sporting moments come along.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has been photographed watching this gold medal match in Quebec.

They are certainly political undertones to this grudge match but the sport has done the talking here.

Well done Canada!!! Regular fans might be used to seeing fighting but I really think it needs to be capped at the Olympics. Punching like we just saw from the USA isn't the sportsmanship of Olympians.

What a period - certainly altered in Canada's direction but we are gearing up for what should be an amazing final 20 minutes.

The second period ends with fisticuffs in front of the bench.

We're all square in the gold medal match, with Cale Makar's strike for Canada cancelling out Matt Boldy's first period effort.

It looked like it was going to be a frustrating period for Canada, wasting more than 90 seconds of 5 on 3 and finding Connor Hellebuyck rock solid in the USA goal, but they made a breakthrough in the final two minutes.

    Phew.
