There is a more muted, tense atmosphere in the arena now. A sense of nervousness from both sets of supporters.

This overtime period could last another 20 minutes or more, it could be over in seconds.

Whatever happens, someone is about to become a national hero.

That was an incredible period of hockey with chances at either end.

Both teams had the chance to win it and now we have the prospect of three-on-three overtime. For the first time in Olympic history, the men's tournament will be decided by three-on-three overtime.

Canada needed overtime to beat USA 3-2 in the 2010 final, Sidney Crosby coming up with the winner in the 68th minute.

Crosby, a two-time Olympic gold medallist, isn't icing today due to injury.

The men's ice hockey final is going into overtime!

It'll be 3-on-3 for 20 minutes. Next goal wins. If no one scores, we'll have another 20-minute period. There are no shootouts in the Olympic final.

After failing to make the most of three minutes with an extra man, USA will have to survive a little over a minute a man down.

And, while I don't cover a huge amount of ice hockey for the BBC, even I could tell that was the clearest trip you will ever see in this sport.

USA's Jack Hughes goes to the box for a high stick on Bo Horvat.

It will be 4 on 4 for 49 seconds and then Canada will be on the power play. Huge two minutes coming up.

Another minute of the power play ticks by. USA really haven't made the most of their player advantage.

And the referee's arm has gone up for a penalty against USA for a high stick. Canada have pulled their goalie to make it 5 on 5. The whistle will blow if USA touch the puck.

Canada scramble away a rebound and Mark Stone kills some time in the middle of the ice with three USA skaters around him.

Two minutes killed!

USA, who've been on the back foot for much of this game, have a golden opportunity here.
