Chloe Kim also spoke about Choi Ga-on, who at just 17-years-old performed on the biggest stage and won gold: "It was so inspirational. It’s so funny because she won her first Olympic gold medal at the same age as I did. It’s such a full-circle moment.

"I’ve known Gaon since she was little, and it means a lot to see that I’ve inspired the next generation and they’re now out here killing it."

Choi Ga-on her golden Olympic debut: "During the final, mentally it was so tough. But right now I am the happiest.

"My knees are a bit bad, but I feel like I'm overcoming it all with happiness.

"It's the kind of story you only see in dreams, so I'm incredibly happy it happened today."

  6. Kim 'proud for landing a run and walking away with a medal'published at 21:12 GMT 12 February

The big story of tonight was seventeen-year-old Choi Ga-on denying American great Chloe Kim snowboarding history in the halfpipe final.

Kim had been hoping to become the first snowboarder - male or female - to win three consecutive Olympic gold medals.

But as heavy snow fell in Livigno, South Korean Choi usurped Kim at the top of the standings with 90.25 points from her final run, a score the 25-year-old could not better on her last attempt.

"Tonight was really crazy," said Kim. "The whole time I’m just like, 'I’m so happy I’m here'. It wasn’t looking too good for me before I came out. Just proud of myself for landing a run and walking away with a medal.

"Today might’ve been my eighth day on snow this entire winter. I haven’t been able to practise as much as I would’ve liked. Just proud of myself for putting it down today.”

On her shoulder injury, she added: "I’ll be going home and getting surgery on it. It’s quite unstable. Just happy that we’re here."

Francesca Lollobrigida has already made it a golden day for Italy at the rink with her second gold of the games, winning the 5000m speed skating to add to her 3000m medal from earlier in the week.

"I'm feeling amazing," she said afterward. "For me, it was important because last year I won the world title in this distance. "To repeat myself again with the Olympic title is a dream."

It looked like she might have to settle for silver, as the 35-year-old appeared to flag in the closing laps.

"I knew I was [almost] skating alone because I spoke with Martina Sablikova (who she skated against), and she wasn't feeling well. It was a race against the time, but also against myself."

On the last two laps, knowing she was close to eventual silver medalist Merel Conijn of the Netherlands.

"I was like, OK, now or never. At the finish line I saw the number one.

"After the race I was with my hands on my legs. I wanted to say thanks to the people, but I couldn't at first. I was dead."
