Huge interest in heat two - it features 1000m and 1500m gold medallist Jens van 't Wout and Italy’s Thomas Nadalini, who won bronze at last month’s European Championships and is the hosts' best hope for a medal in this event.

Also involved is defending champion Liu Shaoang. The 27-year-old won gold in Beijing representing Hungary, but has since switched allegiance to China - his father’s birth country.

Van 't Wout and Liu cross the line first and second to quality, with Nadalini third.

    Disaster for Hungary's Moon Won-jun.

He false started in heat one, and in short track you don't get a second chance like in athletics.

His event is over before he even got off the start line.

Canada's Steven Dubois, the bronze medallist in this event in Beijing four years ago, wins the first quarter-final.

Peter in Norfolk is wondering what the white asterisk on the scoreboard means.

That denotes which side have the hammer - the right to throw last in the end.

And Fred in Shoreham has asked how they decide who should have the hammer.

In the round-robin stages, you get the hammer by winning the Last Stone draw (as we explained here). And you keep it by not scoring in an end. That's why teams sometimes choose to 'blank' an end.

In the semis and final, the team that finished highest in the round-robin standings starts with the hammer.

Two stones each to go, one stone each in the house.

The Japanese stone is in the marginally better position, but Team GB possess the hammer for this end.

In the unpredictable world of short track, winning one gold medal is an achievement. Winning three at the same Games is remarkable.

That is what Jens van 't Wout is aiming for tonight, the Dutchman having already won gold in the 1000m and 1500m.

No person has ever won three individual short track golds at the same Olympics before.

Japan get a point on the board, but that was a missed opportunity.

Team GB's final stone doesn't knock away a Japanese stone in the way they intended, leaving it closest to the centre of the house.

Japan have a chance to add a second stone and score two, but it falls short!
