    And blast it they did.

Japan respond with a stone that knocks a British stone, but it stalls after making contact with another red.

    One stone each remaining.

Two stones each to go in the fourth end.

Japan place their latest effort slightly above two British reds with a gap between them - could it be knocked through?

"Just blast it on the nose," says one of the GB team.

A great start for GB. Japan are definitely chasing us. We are placing our stones in great places. We just have to keep this up.

    Not close enough for Japan!

They go into heavy sweeping mode to try to get their final stone into the centre of the house, but it falls short of their target.

Team GB add an extra point, Japan retain the hammer for the upcoming fourth end.

How do curlers avoid falling over?published at 18:40 GMT 18 February

Ever wondered why these curlers never look like falling over* on the ice?

Well, most of them wear either bespoke curling shoes or adapted trainers, but the key thing is the quarter-inch Teflon plate on the bottom of the sliding foot - left for right-handers and vice versa - to help them glide.

Sometimes that will be a single plate right the length of the sole, but most elite players will have two separate discs to allow a bit more movement of the foot.

The other foot will just have a grippy rubber sole, principally so you don't fall over...

You might also notice that the sweepers have a silicone tip on toe of their dominant foot - that's to reduce friction when they are chasing the stone down the ice.

That was a nice, well-controlled end. These guys have not played this Japanese team often - I have found four head to heads and Rebecca Morrison has won the last three of them.

What needs to happen?published at 18:20 GMT 18 February

Curling - GB women 0-0 Japan

To be honest, I'm not entirely sure at this stage.

The one thing we do know is that GB need to win tonight and again tomorrow against Italy (13:05 GMT) then see how the chips fall.

Five wins might be enough to see them through but, equally, it might not. Canada and Denmark are also playing tonight, so their results will have an impact.

All will become clear over the next few hours.
