Normally I would have expected Fontana to not give that first position away but Korea are so strong at this event.

[Korea's depth is] phenomenal. Individually they haven't been that successful but they always seem to put it together at the Olympic Games.

Back at the speed skating, what a dramatic finale to that women's 3000m relay final...

Hosts Italy came so close to another gold, taking advantage of a Canadian slip to move in front in the closing stages.

But South Korea assumed the lead with a couple of laps to go and held on for the win.

Japan had to start chasing. Today Rebecca Morrison was hitting hit after hit.

It is the mental aspect and at the Olympics there is more pressure on this than the World Championships.

The women still have work to do. They must win a third game in a row - against hosts Italy (Thursday, 13:05 GMT) - and hope other results go their way if they are to make Friday's semis.

The inexperienced rink - with only Jen Dodds surviving from the 2022 gold-medal winning team - finished sixth in last year's World Championships and do seem to be hitting form at the right time.

Morrison, especially, has grown into this tournament and it is her bold shot-making that underpinned Wednesday's two victories, which have hauled this team back to the brink of a shot at the medals.

Now they need to emerge unscathed from one more day of drama to complete an extraordinary reversal of fortunes.

That was our best performance of the full week.

I think after the game this morning, Rebecca Morrison sealing that shot has lifted their spirits.

They look like they're enjoying it out there.

Team GB steal the end, adding another point to extend their lead to six - Japan choose to shake hands and end the match!

Japan's final throw can't displace a British red from the centre of the house and that's the match.

A fantastic performance from Team GB, who will now be watching the three other ongoing fixtures with great interest.

Arianna Fontana has 13 Olympic medals after winning 500m silver and mixed relay gold earlier in these Games. One more medal would put her on her own as Italy’s most decorated Olympian, summer or winter.

It would also move her to just one behind Marit Bjoergen's all-time Winter Olympic record of 15 medals.

Fontana had looked in control of her 1000m quarter-final and semi-final, but in the medal race she was crowded out and left with too much to do.

She said she had extra motivation after feeling she was impeded in the 1000m final, in which she finished fourth.

"I'll try to turn this anger into extra fuel to add to the fire," said the 35-year-old.

  20. How it workspublished at 19:57 GMT 18 February

Short track speed skating - women's 3000m relay

The women's relay is 27 laps of the track.

Each team has four skaters and they can decide how many laps each skater completes, but all four must take part and the final two laps must be covered by the same skater.

To complete a relay exchange, the skater on the ice must tag the next skater. To maintain momentum, it is common for the next skater to crouch and receive a push from behind.

"Organised chaos" is a good way to describe what we're about to see over the next few minutes.
