    Noskova 6-3 4-4 Mertens*

Elise Mertens must have spent twice the amount of time serving today than Linda Noskova has.

Almost every service game for the Belgian has been a war of attrition...

And on the latest break point, she produces a remarkable, remarkable effort, managing to get back several Noskova rockets before a lunging reach somehow ends up lobbing the Czech. Astounding.

What a time to find a first serve! Match point saved.

  3. Match point Kostyukpublished at 14:45 BST 8 July

    Kostyuk 6-3 5-2 Paolini*

That might be Jasmine Paolini's best shot of the match - a teasing backhand drop shot which is returned into the net.

There's nothing teasing about Marta Kostyuk's backhand winner, however. Walloped. 15-all.

The pair trade points for 30-all.

Kostyuk smacks another backhand return, this one kissing the baseline, and although Paolini digs out a reply, she's powerless against a tickled drop shot.

    Noskova 6-3 4-4 Mertens*

A brilliant serve out wide from Elise Mertens rescues one break point. 'Let's go' says her coach.

And then a wild, wild Linda Noskova backhand wastes the second opportunity.

She's had a number of break-point chances in this second set - and taken none. Deuce. For what seems like the umpteenth time on the Mertens serve today.

The slice has caused a lot of mistakes for Jasmine Paolini. She is feeling the moment now because she knows her Wimbledon hopes are slipping away.

The weight of shot from Marta Kostyuk has just been too immense. Her forehand is such a threat, so it is a case of where do you go because her backhand is still a force.

The crowd roars another forehand winner from Jasmine Paolini - her third in quick succession. 0-15.

A quiet murmur goes around Centre Court as Marta Kostyuk double-faults. 0-30.

The Ukrainian, unruffled, rattles off two forehand winners of her own before consecutive errors from Paolini secure the hold. One is a sliced forehand into the tramlines, the second - with Kostyuk rushing the net - is a wild, wide backhand.

    Is this the moment?

Linda Noskova punishes a weak Mertens second serve with a monster return.

    A double fault follows and it's 0-30...

This is a monster game here. It will be interesting to see if Jasmine Paolini can keep the momentum of her service hold, break Marta Kostyuk and get this set back on serve.

Let's see if Kostyuk starts to feel a few more nerves trying to close out the match. It's one thing to get the lead but another to actually win.

    Noskova 6-3 4-4 Mertens*

For a player whose game features a lot of power strokes, Linda Noskova doesn't half boast a wonderful delicate cross-court drop shot in her armoury.

She's employed it a few times so far today and once again it gets the job done to help the Czech 40-0 up.

But hang on, a lob goes long and a couple other errors mean she's pegged back to deuce... No bother, though, an ace keeps her serve flawless in this match.

Marta Kostyuk is absolutely steamrolling Jasmine Paolini, it is blink and you've missed it stuff.

When Kostyuk is playing tennis like this, there really isn't a great deal you can do. She is managing to take control from the very start of the points. She is returning from on the baseline, so she isn't necessarily taking it super early, but she is averaging 82mph on her second serve returns.

Paolini is just getting no time to think.

Paolini will keep fighting. If she can stay in touch you can always have a chance. Kostyuk is hitting hard but she can spray her shots too.

    *Kostyuk 6-3 4-2 Paolini

Back-to-back forehand winners from Jasmine Paolini, the second absolutely pummelled into the corner of the court on Marta Kostyuk's backhand side. Much better from the Italian but is it too little, too late?

At 40-0, Kostyuk creams a 90+mph cross-court forehand winner off a second serve - incredible striking - but a wide forehand from the Ukrainian secures the hold for Paolini. She's clinging on.

A stroke of luck for Marta Kostyuk. Up at the net, she does well to get a racquet on a booming stroke from Jasmine Paolini and the net cord tips the ball in her favour.

She comes into the net again on advantage. Although she fails to bury a forehand winner, driving the ball back towards Paolini, the Italian nets her backhand reply.

  14. Mertens holds again in face of pressurepublished at 14:32 BST 8 July

    *Noskova 6-3 3-4 Mertens

Wowzers. Linda Noskova unleashes some massive forehands from 30-0 down, perhaps thinking she's playing with house money after a poor start to this game.

But she goes too big with the next one, long to bring up 40-30 - and Elise Mertens seals the hold with a nice whipped forehand in as she comes in to the net.

    *Kostyuk 6-3 3-1 Paolini

That's more like it from Jasmine Paolini, finally getting on top of a brutal baseline exchange and grinding Marta Kostyuk down. The Ukrainian eventually nets a backhand. 30-all.

Kostyuk hammers down a first serve, which Paolini can't return into play, but then sends a forehand a couple of feet long.

Just a sniff here for Paolini.

Mertens is bouncing around on the baseline just in front of us. She looks like one of those video games where you press the button and the character bounces up and down very energetically.

She doesn't look hindered by it at all, so must surely be precautionary, but it is very heavy taping.

Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool are out of the men's doubles, their Wimbledon title defence coming to an end with a quarter-final loss in straight sets to Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic on court two.

Henry Patten is Britain's sole representative left in the men's doubles - he is through to the semi-finals already with Finnish partner Harri Heliovaara.

    Noskova 6-3 3-3 Mertens*

'No' is the answer to that question we posed a couple of posts ago - Elise Mertens cannot threaten the Linda Noskova serve.

The Czech keeps the points short and easily holds to 15.

This was exactly the stage in the first set where the Mertens serve was broken - the only break of serve we've had all match...

Marta Kostyuk's forehand has been near faultless. Jasmine Paolini's has not. Another loose stroke gifts the Ukrainian a break early in the second set.

  20. Break point Kostyukpublished at 14:27 BST 8 July

    Kostyuk 6-3 2-1 Paolini*

Jasmine Paolini is grunting with effort as she goes toe-to-toe with Marta Kostyuk in a baseline exchange. The Italian shows delicate touch with a floaty drop shot and although Kostyuk chases it down, her cross-court reply goes just wide. 15-all.

A double fault invites pressure and the pressure mounts when Paolini puts a simple forehand into the net. 30-40.
