    Zverev 6-1 5-2 Royer*

Alexander Zverev and Valentin Royer trade a couple of sliced backhands, slowing the point right down. Eventually, Zverev gets bored and slam a two-handed backhand into the opposite corner. 30-0.

Royer gets a point for 40-15 - a beauty of a backhand return - but he's struggling to put Zverev under any real pressure on serve.

Jaume Munar is continuing with his game plan and trying to pile on the pressure on Jacob Fearnley's serve. Once again, he was looking to hit his return and come forward there.

Interestingly, it looks like Munar is holding back a little on some of his second serve returns now. He is just trying to give himself time to start the point before searching for a winner.

  3. Royer holds to lovepublished at 16:04 BST 2 July

    *Zverev 6-1 4-2 Royer

What did Valentin Royer say to himself under that blanket?

He comes on the approach off his opening serve, takes Alexander Zverev's return halfway up the court and then pings a backhand volley winner across the net at a sharp angle. More of that, please!

    He rattles through the hold.

  4. Zverev holdspublished at 16:02 BST 2 July

    Zverev 6-1 4-1 Royer*

Valentin Royer shows a bit of renewed vigour after that hold, jumping from foot to foot in between points.

Alexander Zverev shakes his head after seriously undercooking a drop shot but it's a comfortable hold to 15.

Zverev is in cruise control. Royer's vigour has rapidly disappeared, sitting with his Wimbledon towel on his head at the change of ends.

    *Fearnley 4-6 1-2 Munar

A superb point by Jacob Fearnley during that previous game left Jaume Munar scampering so furiously towards a drop shot that he ended up directly in front of me, on Fearnley’s side of the net.

The home favourite looks to be building momentum but he’s soon stood with his hands on his hips and looking at his team after missing a routine volley, and the crowd falls quiet again as his early advantage in set two disappears.

  6. Munar holdspublished at 16:01 BST 2 July

    *Fearnley 4-6 1-2 Munar

Jaume Munar has had seven break-point opportunities and converted three of them.

Jacob Fearnley is two from four so far.

Munar makes sure there's no break points in the latest game, serving brilliantly to complete a love hold.

  7. Munar breaks Fearnley backpublished at 15:59 BST 2 July

    Fearnley 4-6 1-1 Munar*

Jacob Fearnley finds himself break point down but saves it with a superb ace that lands bang on the line.

But Fearnley then nets a backhand volley at the net and will have to save another...

And a forehand wide means Fearnley hands the advantage straight back to Jaume Munar.

  8. Royer holdspublished at 15:58 BST 2 July

    *Zverev 6-1 3-1 Royer

After losing nine consecutive games, Valentin Royer holds to love.

    Hearty cheers all round.

He's up and running in the second set.

  9. Game and first set - Berrettinipublished at 15:57 BST 2 July

    Berrettini 6-4 0-0 Fils*

Matteo Berrettini has just battled to a first set lead over 20th seed Arthur Fils on Centre Court.

Berrettini, who was beaten in the 2021 Wimbledon final, has struggled with injuries over the past couple of years - missing three of the past five Grand Slams - but looks in good form today.

The Italian broke to lead 4-3 before the remainder of the set played out on serve.

Fearnley could be far more explosive on his serve. He leans his left knee backwards before reaching his power position, which limits drive. Incorrect serve footwork often transfers into general movement, causing faults during matches, unless this is because of a lingering knee injury.

  11. Zverev holdspublished at 15:55 BST 2 July

    Zverev 6-1 3-0 Royer*

Two big first serves from Alexander Zverev, including a 135mph ace for advantage. Deuce dispatched.

    *Zverev 6-1 2-0 Royer

Applause all round for Valentin Royer as he finally connects with Alexander Zverev's serve, taking his forehand at shoulder height and pinging the ball cross-court. No movement from Zverev.

Royer slips after returning a wide serve, going down in a heap but quickly rebounding to his feet - no harm done.

Zverev double-faults for 40-all. A window of opportunity?

  13. 'Fearnley shadow-swinging the forehand'published at 15:54 BST 2 July

    *Fearnley 4-6 1-0 Munar

    Arvind Parmar

I just wonder if these misses off the forehand wing are beginning to get into Jacob Fearnley's head. We can see him sort of shadow-swinging the forehand between points.

He has hit some really good ones during this match, but he has missed a few that he should've made. It seems like he's lost a bit of the feel.

  16. Zverev breakspublished at 15:50 BST 2 July

    *Zverev 6-1 2-0 Royer

Wow. Alexander Zverev backs away, winds up, and sends a down-the-line forehand scorching onto the baseline.

That's eight games in a row for the second seed.

Better from Valentin Royer, dragging Alexander Zverev from one corner to the other and coming on the approach, forcing the German to go for a pass. Wide.

  20. Break point Zverevpublished at 15:47 BST 2 July

    Zverev 6-1 1-0 Royer*

Valentin Royer is a good three or four feet behind the baseline as Alexander Zverev smacks ball after ball back at him. After a timid forehand into the net, he lets out a stream of frustrated French. 15-30.

He pulls one point back but then it's retreat, retreat, retreat again.
