The winner of this one will face either Daniil Medvedev or Learner Tien in the last eight, with potentially a semi-final against world number one Carlos Alcaraz to follow.

Tien has just broken Medvedev in the first game of their match on Margaret Court Arena.

Coco Gauff speaking on-court after beating Karolina Muchova in three sets: "If you know my history it's been tough with the serve but I honestly thought today was great, maybe one loose service game in the second set, but after that it was pretty good. I'm really happy to just be able to close it on my racquet.

"She [Muchova] definitely elevated her game, sometimes I was a bit passive but it's really tough, she plays with so much variety and you never know what you're going to do.

"Awkward forehand or backhand down the line rallies and it's not easy and I felt sometimes I was hitting good shots and she was just hitting the ball really well. I'm really happy to get through this one today."

World number one Carlos Alcaraz addressing the changes to his serve after booking his place in the quarter-finals: "I'm surprising myself to be honest.

"The serve is something I've been working on for a long time. I'm really happy to see the improvement of the serve and to have a high percentage.

"After every set, I try to take up my percentage, I look at the screen after every set. In general, [in] the four matches I've played, the serve has been an important weapon for me."

Top seeds Carlos Alcaraz and Aryna Sabalenka cruised into the quarter-finals.

Alcaraz beat American 19th seed Tommy Paul in straight sets while Sabalenka overcame Canadian rising star Victoria Mboko, the 17th seed, 6-1 7-6 (7-1).

Her reward is a quarter-final against another dangerous teenager - and Mboko's doubles partner - in Iva Jovic. The 18-year-old, seeded 29th, dropped just one game as she beat Yulia Putintseva.

Third seed Coco Gauff beat Karolina Muchova in three sets but did waste three match points before getting over the line.

    Medvedev v Tien

Three-time Australian Open runner-up Daniil Medvedev comes up against a familiar opponent today - Learner Tien knocked him out of last year's tournament in a five-set thriller.

They met three times in all during 2025 with Tien, seeded 25th at this year's event, winning twice.

But Russian Medvedev won their most recent encounter in the Shanghai Masters last 16 in October.

  7. Medvedev v Tien next up on Margaret Court Arenapublished at 07:19 GMT 25 January

    Medvedev v Tien

In typical Daniil Medvedev style, the 11th seed has taken something of a scenic route into the fourth round.

After beating Jesper de Jong in straight sets in the first round, he had to come from a set down to beat Quentin Halys in round two and two sets down to beat Fabian Marozsan in round three.

Coincidentally, his fourth-round opponent Learner Tien has taken the opposite approach by shortening his matches as the tournament progresses - coming from 2-1 down to beat Marcos Giron in round one, beating Alexander Shevchenko in four sets in round two, and Nuno Borges in three.

Tien, 20, also reached this stage at last year's Australian Open, falling Lorenzo Sonego in four sets.

As for Medvedev, he's reached the fourth round in Melbourne five times prior to this year. On the three occasions he's emerged victorious, he's gone on to reach the final.

German third seed Alexander Zverev, who knocked out Great Britain's Cameron Norrie in round three, is a set to the good in his fourth-round match against Argentina's Francisco Cerundolo.

And it's easy to see where the first set was won - Zverev was almost flawless on serve, putting in 85% of his first serves and winning 16 of the 20 points when he had the first shot. Cerundolo's first-serve percentage, meanwhile, was down at 43%.

A group of fans in Argentina shirts have been trying their best to rally the 18th seed but he's been second-best so far.
