Here's what men's third seed Novak Djokovic made of his victory over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina:

"I knew it was going to be a difficult match, a physical match. He competed very well, he's an amazing fighter and an amazing player. There are not many weaknesses in his game and he played a great match.

"A win is a win. I thought if I lost the second set we would probably play five hours today.

"You have to be ready, that is what Grand Slam tennis is all about. It takes a lot of effort but you have to believe in yourself. I am proud of the performance today for sure.

"Three hours for two sets is obviously a lot. It required a lot of energy and my priority now is to recover. Tomorrow I will have a day off and I'll be ready to play again."

    *Norrie 1-6 2-4 Musetti

Norrie has made 19 unforced errors to Musetti's seven so far in this match and that's been the big issue for the British number one so far - too many mistakes.

Musetti doesn't drop a point on his way to a comfortable hold on serve to put some daylight between himself and Norrie.

  3. 'Norrie getting frustrated'published at 18:05 BST 2 June 2023

We don’t see much emotion from Norrie usually but he is really getting frustrated with himself. Some stern angry words as he walked up to the net.

    Townsend/Murray 6-2 7-5 Krawczyk/Salisbury

The second seeds in the mixed doubles are out!

2021 French Open winners Joe Salisbury and American Desirae Krawczyk have been knocked out in the first round to another British-American pairing in Jamie Murray and Taylor Townsend.

In the final game, Taylor Townsend smacked a volley which hit Joe Salisbury on the back, creating commotion in the crowd.

It was a match played in good spirits though and it was all smiles at the net at the end of the match.

Townsend/Murray were down a break in the second set but broke back twice to claim victory. They will face Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski and American Nathaniel Lammons in the second round.

Apart from the hold-to-love which got Norrie on the board in the first set, each of his other five service games have seen Musetti get to at least 30.

These slogs are sapping energy from the mind and body of the British number one.

Norrie shouts his annoyance at the Mathieu clay before heading back to his chair.

  7. Musetti takes first break of second setpublished at 18:04 BST 2 June 2023

In contrast, Musetti has had a few break points and he's swiftly 40-0 up on Norrie's serve in the fourth game of this second set.

Norrie saves the first one with a good forehand winner and again on the next point but then puts a return into the net and Musetti breaks again.

Musetti needs to halt this little bit of momentum Norrie has been building and he does that with a pretty comfortable hold.

Norrie hasn't got to break point yet in this match.

  9. 'Norrie starting to cause some damage'published at 17:58 BST 2 June 2023

Norrie is staring to find his range now. He’s had to think on his feet, find something else to cause some damage to his opponent.

He’s just about starting to do that and get momentum.

That was not a particularly enjoyable tennis match for Novak Djokovic. But who cares? He’s through.

One step closer to that 23rd Grand Slam title.

That's more like it from Cam Norrie.

The Brits painted more lines than Keith Haring in that service hold as he starts to settle into this contest.

Norrie holds again, finishing his service game in style as he first sends a fine angled drive out of Musetti's reach before then thumping down a forehand winner that gives his opponent no chance.

    Djokovic 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (7-5) 6-2 Davidovich Fokina

A superb effort from Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, but it is Novak Djokovic who comes through an entertaining match-up in straight sets on Court Philippe Chatrier.

It's his third successive straight-set win at Roland Garros, but he had to work hard for that one.

A hold to 15 for Musetti, who hit a delightfully cool forehand winner at 30-15 that drew applause from the crowd.

Norrie appears to be cutting out those errors that were creeping in in the first set, however, and there are some signs he is settling into this now.

Despite entering the court with a big grin on his face, Djokovic doesn't seem to have enjoyed this at all.

But, three-and-a-half hours in, he knows another hold here will put him on the verge of the fourth round.

No slip-up. A hold to 15. One more game required.

The roars from Cameron Norrie are almost blood-curdling. No wonder Novak Djokovic was rattled in Rome.

They are intensifying with every winning point as he fights to hang on to serve in this lengthy game.

Until the moment when he clinches it. Instead Norrie clenches his fist and hotfoots it quietly to his chair where he changes racquet.

  19. Norrie holdspublished at 17:48 BST 2 June 2023

    Norrie 1-6 1-0 Musetti*

An excellent hold by Norrie as the longest game of the match so far ends with Norrie finding the angle with a brilliant backhand before taking the game when Musetti sends a backhand return just wide.

    Much needed.

    *Norrie 1-6 0-0 Musetti

Right, can Norrie hit back now after that disappointing first set? It isn't the ideal start as he overcooks a forehand return before Musetti takes the next point and Norrie is 30-0 down.

Being broken so early in the second set would be a nightmare but Norrie battles back, stretching Musetti at the back of the court to win some good points and move 40-30 ahead.

It is a tough test for Musetti and a 22-shot rally ends with the Italian getting a forehand winner and it is deuce.
