    Alcaraz 3-0 Shapovalov*

Lorenzo Musetti, who awaits the winner here following his victory over Cameron Norrie earlier, will be hoping Denis Shapovalov can at least tire Carlos Alcaraz out a bit this evening.

The 20-year-old is constantly on his toes and looks full of energy on Court Philippe Chatrier. Nothing is a lost cause to him.

He holds again to open up a 3-0 lead.

The Spaniard is off to a great start.

    Alcaraz 1-0 Shapovalov*

Much better from Shapovalov, who's now striking the ball with more belief after a tentative start.

A forehand winner takes him to game point, but Alcaraz responds with one of his own to deny him.

A third opportunity then passes the world number one by as Shapovalov pops away a volley.

    Alcaraz 1-0 Shapovalov*

Alcaraz just misses the line with a cross-court forehand, but he quickly puts the pressure back on with a clinical backhand into the corner he failed to hit just moments ago.

Shapovalov delivers a pin-point first serve to save another break point.

I think I would struggle to coach Alcaraz because how on earth do you improve him?

There’s nothing you can do. He is so complete already.

  7. Break point Alcarazpublished at 19:36 BST 2 June 2023

A double fault from Denis Shapovalov is quite the frustrating way to hand over a first break point.

Denis Shapovalov draws applause from the crowd as he settles in on serve with a forehand winner.

Today is going to be a real interesting match with Alcaraz. He is the man to beat here at Roland Garros.

For Denis Shapovalov he has nothing to lose. Hopefully he can go out there and enjoy the moment. He can be a really exciting player.

Carlos Alcaraz is only 20 but is firmly taking tennis by storm as he looks to win the French Open for the first time.

The world number one became the youngest player to reach the top of the rankings when he first achieved it at the age of 19 years and five months last year.

And he is going strongly at Roland Garros so far with a straight sets win against Falvio Cobolli in his first round match before beating Taro Daniel in four sets in the second round.

“I mean, first of all, I’m a huge, huge fan of his. I think he’s a great guy. He’s super humble for achieving what he has at such a young age,” says Denis Shapovalov, who faces Alcaraz tonight.

“He’s not in an easy spot being No 1 and so young and so much noise around him. I really look up to him. I think he is also just a nice guy."

  13. Can Shapovalov cause an upset?published at 19:28 BST 2 June 2023

World number 32 Denis Shapovalov is 11-29 against top-10 ranked opponents, with his only victory over a top 10 player on clay coming against Rafael Nadal in Rome last year.

The 24-year-old left-hander last upset a top-10 player at a Grand Slam when he defeated Alexander Zverev, then ranked third, at the 2022 Australian Open.

He has, however, never beaten a reigning world number one.

In Carlos Alcaraz, he is facing a player that is the top seed at a Grand Slam for the first time in his career - in addition to being the youngest top seed at Roland Garros since Bjorn Borg in 1976.

US Open winner Alcaraz, a quarter-finalist last year, is 32-3 this year - winning four titles - and 22-2 on clay.

It's night session time at Roland Garros!

And it's time for world number one Carlos Alcaraz to take centre stage on Friday's night out on Philippe Chatrier.

Next up for the Spanish 20-year-old, following a four-set win over Japan's Taro Daniel in round two, is a meeting with Canadian 26th seed Denis Shapovalov.

It is set to be the first ever meeting between the pair.

Greek fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas is well on course for the French Open fourth round.

The 24-year-old is now two sets up against Argentine Diego Schwartzman on Court Suzanne Lenglen.

He said earlier in the tournament that red wine and baguettes would help him do well in Paris.

Well, whatever he's doing, it appears to be working a treat.

On getting through his matches pretty quickly so far: "Even the last round was not that long. Hopefully I will rest and recover as best as I can and I will be ready for the next match."

On whether he will watch Alcaraz v Shapovalov, given he will face the winner of that match: "I have to see some points, some rallies. They are both really great players. It will be a battle with them for sure but for now I want to enjoy this win."
