  1. Game and second set - Alcarazpublished at 21:01 BST 2 June 2023

    Alcaraz 6-1 6-4 0-0 Shapovalov*

Well, it was better from Shapovalov, but for every good game he played there was an equally poor one thrown in.

Despite not playing his best, Alcaraz takes a two set lead on Court Philippe Chatrier and a place in the fourth round does not feel far away.

  2. 'Shapovalov's concentration slips when he's in the lead'published at 21:00 BST 2 June 2023

    *Alcaraz 6-1 5-4 Shapovalov

    Laura Robson
Former British number one on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

Those couple of games sum up Denis Shapovalov over this year so far. When he gets the lead, his concentration just slips and that's all it takes.

  3. Set points Alcarazpublished at 20:59 BST 2 June 2023

    *Alcaraz 6-1 5-4 Shapovalov

Shapovalov drops an unconvincing forehand into the net.

He's then overpowered by Alcaraz, before the Spaniard mixes it up with a delicate drop shot.

    Three set points.

  4. Varillas battles backpublished at 20:58 BST 2 June 2023

    Hurkacz 6-3 3-6 6-7 (3-7) Varillas

The winner of the match between Hubert Hurkacz and Juan Pablo Varillas will face Novak Djokovic in the fourth round and that match has just gone into a fourth set.

Hurkacz won the first 6-3 but Varillas battled back to take the next two 6-3 7-6 (7-3).

  5. 'Shapovalov doesn't trust his second serve'published at 20:57 BST 2 June 2023

    *Alcaraz 6-1 5-4 Shapovalov

    David Law
Commentator on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

I don't think Denis Shapovalov trusts his second serve so he's going for two first ones.

  6. Alcaraz breakspublished at 20:57 BST 2 June 2023

    *Alcaraz 6-1 5-4 Shapovalov

It's another game that Denis Shapovalov has really just given away.

A couple of double faults, a couple of unforced errors - Alcaraz didn't have to work hard for that at all but he now has the chance to serve for a two-set lead.

  7. Break points Alcarazpublished at 20:55 BST 2 June 2023

    Alcaraz 6-1 4-4 Shapovalov*

This is a crucial game for Shapovalov as he looks to avoid falling two sets behind, but a double fault brings Alcaraz into the picture.

    Oh dear oh dear.

Shapovalov registers another double fault as he goes for it on a second serve, handing over two break points.

  8. Alcaraz holdspublished at 20:52 BST 2 June 2023

    Alcaraz 6-1 4-4 Shapovalov*

Four breaks of serve in the first seven games of this second set. It's undoubtedly been a much more competitive match over this last half an hour or so.

Will we have more twists in store, or will Alcaraz us that as his cue to put the hammer down?

The world number one races into a 40-15 lead on serve, but he's made to work for the hold as Shapovalov reaches 40-30 before drawing the Spaniard into a frantic point - but Alcaraz rises to the occasion.

  9. 'Drop shot becoming more important'published at 20:51 BST 2 June 2023

    *Alcaraz 6-1 3-4 Shapovalov

    David Law
Commentator on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

Feels to me like the drop shot is becoming a more important shot in tennis with every year.

  10. Alcaraz breakspublished at 20:48 BST 2 June 2023

    *Alcaraz 6-1 3-4 Shapovalov

"Vamossss" shouts Carlos Alcaraz, as he works down Shapovalov's defence to clinch the break.

  11. Break point Alcarazpublished at 20:46 BST 2 June 2023

    Alcaraz 6-1 2-4 Shapovalov*

Carlos Alcaraz slides forward to lift a delicate, angled volley over and lets out a roar as he sets about making moves on the Shapovalov serve.

The Spaniard reaches 30-30 and then patiently waits to pick out a forehand winner at the end of a 16-shot rally to reach break point.

  12. Alcaraz holdspublished at 20:42 BST 2 June 2023

    Alcaraz 6-1 2-4 Shapovalov*

A thunderous forehand from Denis Shapovalov gets him up and running on the Alcaraz serve.

It's a very different match now, with Alcaraz struggling to return to his first-set level.

The top seed recovers, however, comfortably holding to 15 in the end to stay in touch.

  13. 'Alcaraz enjoys putting on a show'published at 20:40 BST 2 June 2023

    *Alcaraz 6-1 1-4 Shapovalov

    Laura Robson
Former British number one on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

Carlos Alcaraz would not have as many fans if he didn't go for the flashy shots and if he wasn't being himself. He so clearly enjoys putting on a show and going for the shots you least expect.

  14. Shapovalov holdspublished at 20:39 BST 2 June 2023

    *Alcaraz 6-1 1-4 Shapovalov

Shapovalov looks like a different player as he leans into a forehand winner and edges out to 30-0.

A big miss slows his progress, but he makes amends to reach game point. No mistakes this time! Game on.

  15. Shapovalov breakspublished at 20:35 BST 2 June 2023

    Alcaraz 6-1 1-3 Shapovalov*

Remarkably, we have a fourth break of serve in a row.

Shapovalov takes it with a sweeping forehand.

He'll feel confident of improving on his previous service game as he attempts to follow this one up, too.

  16. Break point Shapovalovpublished at 20:34 BST 2 June 2023

    *Alcaraz 6-1 1-2 Shapovalov

It looks like a full house on Court Philippe Chatrier, but that terrible game from Shapovalov has, temporarily at least, deflated hopes of a more competitive contest.

The Canadian handles an attempted lob from Alcaraz to reach 30-30, however, and a missed backhand from Alcaraz opens the door once more.

  17. 'Shocking game from Shapovalov'published at 20:31 BST 2 June 2023

    *Alcaraz 6-1 1-2 Shapovalov

    David Law
Commentator on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

Alcaraz breaks back immediately but my goodness was he helped along the way. That is a shocking game from Denis Shapovalov.

  18. Alcaraz breakspublished at 20:30 BST 2 June 2023

    *Alcaraz 6-1 1-2 Shapovalov

That's going to be so, so frustrating for Denis Shapovalov.

Carlos Alcaraz takes his first opportunity to break back with a backhand winner and puts himself back on track in the second set.

  19. 'Shapovalov's second serve isn't really a second serve'published at 20:29 BST 2 June 2023

    Alcaraz 6-1 0-2 Shapovalov*

    Laura Robson
Former British number one on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

Denis Shapovalov's second serve isn't really a second serve. He accelerates just as much on the first serve, which means less margin and less spin.

  20. Break points Alcarazpublished at 20:28 BST 2 June 2023

    Alcaraz 6-1 0-2 Shapovalov*

After all that hard work too.

Back-to-back double faults put Shapovalov immediately under pressure.

A third then gives Alcaraz two break back points. Unbelievable.
