  1. Finau & Johnson drop shotspublished at 18:05 BST 18 September 2020

    -1 DeChambeau, +2 Finau, +3 Johnson (17*)

What is Tony Finau doing here? He's gone so far right off the tee on eight that he might as well be playing a different hole.

DJ's also gone right. Both have got it all to do just to save par. Neither can. Throwing shots away like paper in the New York wind.

  2. Leaderboardpublished at 18:01 BST 18 September 2020

Can any of the morning players break into the top three before they finish?

    -5 Thomas (18:27)

    -4 Reed (18:16)

    -3 McIlroy (18:27)

    -2 Cabrera Bello (F), Schauffele (16), Kokrak (1), Todd (17:54), English (17:54)

    -1 DeChambeau (16*), Oosthuizen (17), Thompson (a) (17:54)

  3. Birdie for Rahmpublished at 18:00 BST 18 September 2020

    +1 Rahm (16*)

Jon Rahm sinks a putt from almost 20 feet and that is a birdie on the par-three seventh. Two holes left for the Spanish world number two and he's two over today and one over overall.

  4. 8th (Arena)published at 17:56 BST 18 September 2020

    490 yards, par 4:

The beginning of a daunting three-hole stretch, the eighth is a long, difficult dogleg with a very undulating green with a pronounced ridge which runs diagonally across for a real putting challenge.

    +1 Watson (F)

    Bubba WatsonImage source, Getty Images

Bubba Watson is home and hosed with the first round below par today.

    Not bad eh.

Still it could have been so much better, with a double at the last, costing him a spot right up near the top of the leaderboard.

  6. Oosthuizen bogeys againpublished at 17:55 BST 18 September 2020

    -1 Oosthuizen (17)

Louis Oosthuizen is undoing all the good work he's done today.

After two early bogeys, he had two birdies to get back to three under par. But that bogey on 16 has brought another one on 17.

As we've seen so often already this week, if you don't find the fairway off the tee, then making par becomes super tough.

  7. No Grand Slam for Mickelsonpublished at 17:52 BST 18 September 2020

    +12 Mickelson (15)

    Phil MickelsonImage source, Getty Images

Phil Mickelson's US Open is only going to consist of two rounds in 2020.

His task was always going to be an uphill one after a nine-over total yesterday, but a run of three bogeys in four holes now sees him on 12 over with three to go and he will be heading home soon.

Mickelson's won three of golf's four Majors, with this being the only one missing. Not this year.

  8. Dustin Johnson drops a shotpublished at 17:49 BST 18 September 2020

    -1 DeChambeau, +1 Finau, +2 Johnson (16*)

Tony Finau will take that. He's not rattled in too many putts today but that one is very timely indeed.

It's another hole of mixed fortunes for this trio though, with Bryson DeChambeau taking a par and Dustin Johnson's fluffed tee shot costing him a stroke.

  9. Postpublished at 17:44 BST 18 September 2020

    -1 DeChambeau, +2 Finau, +1 Johnson (15*)

Exhibition stuff from Tony Finau and Bryson DeChambeau on the seventh hole which is one of the easiest par threes of the day.

Not so from DJ who comes up well short and decides to get his putter out to tackle the 60-foot putt now facing him from the false front.

He's overcooked that up the slope though and watches it drift well past. This is going to cost him.

  10. Wolff heading southpublished at 17:42 BST 18 September 2020

    +1 Wolff (14*)

Matthew Wolff's incredible record-setting run of only scoring in the 60s in major championships is coming to an end.

The 21-year-old had four rounds in the 60s on his major debut when he finished fourth at last month's US PGA Championship. He then became the first player in history to have his first five in the 60s when he opened with a four-under 66 yesterday.

He was rattling along nicely today at one over after his first nine holes, but four bogeys in his past five holes have derailed his progress.

He's five over for the day, with four to play.

  11. 7th (Babe-in-the-woods)published at 17:40 BST 18 September 2020

    162 yards, par 3

The shortest hole features a green which, while elevated, is fairly flat by Winged Foot standards.

Front hole locations are guarded by the steep false front and a deep bunker on the right, but a genuine birdie chance nevertheless.

  12. DeChambeau bounces backpublished at 17:37 BST 18 September 2020

    -1 DeChambeau, +2 Finau, +1 Johnson (15*)

Tony Finau is taking a drop so faces a tricky shot from the long stuff onto the green.

It's very much a case of trying to limit his losses as he pitches on albeit a good 50 feet or so past. In the end that means accepting a bogey.

Well I suppose it could have been worse, although anymore mishaps like that and the cut line could well be looming.

Meanwhile, Bryson DeChambeau sinks a tricky left to right putt to grab a very welcome birdie. Talk about bouncebackability. That's his fourth birdie immediately after dropping a shot.

His card now shows five birdies, five bogeys and five pars.

  13. Oosthuizen drops at 16published at 17:36 BST 18 September 2020

    -2 Oosthuizen (16)

That's a beautiful approach from Louis Oosthuizen at 16 to make up for a wayward tee shot - he slings one to within 12 feet, tagging a bit of back spin on to leave himself a par-saving putt.

Can he? Nope... Louis drops to two under, three off the pace.

  14. Tough going...published at 17:33 BST 18 September 2020

Only three players out on the course are currently under par today - world number one Dustin Johnson and fellow Americans Daniel Berger and Bubba Watson.

  15. Westwood drops four shots in last three holespublished at 17:31 BST 18 September 2020

    +3 Westwood (F)

Lee Westwood is done for the day and ends with a bogey on the 18th, meaning he dropped four shots in his last three holes.

That drops him to three over overall after a round of six over on Friday.

That should be enough to see him making the cut, but those hoping that this weekend would see him get that first-ever Major title are going to be very disappointed.

  16. Leaderboardpublished at 17:29 BST 18 September 2020

Louis Oosthuizen is still going strong, third with three to play.

    -5 Thomas (18:27)

    -4 Reed (18:16)

    -3 Oosthuizen (15), McIlroy (18:27)

    -2 Cabrera Bello (F), Schauffele (15), Kokrak (17:32), Todd (17:54), English (17:54)

    -1 Watson (17), Thompson (a) (17:54)

  17. Postpublished at 17:26 BST 18 September 2020

    E DeChambeau, +1 Finau, +1 Johnson (14*)

Tony Finau absolutely clatters his tee shot on the sixth but it looks like he's got a whole world of trouble coming up. His ball drifts left and trickles down into a water/mud-filled gully.

Dustin Johnson and Bryson DeChambeau have played textbook stuff here. Straight, long and 70-80 yard pitches now awaiting.

  18. Bad run for Westwoodpublished at 17:24 BST 18 September 2020

    +2 Westwood (17)

    Lee WestwoodImage source, Getty Images

It's a bad end to the day for England's Lee Westwood. He started Friday on three under, two shots off the lead, but he's just come up with a double bogey six on the 16th, then a bogey at the 17th and now he's in the sand on the last.

Five over for the day, two over for the tournament and he should still be playing on Saturday but will be unhappy with his day's efforts.

  19. Postpublished at 17:20 BST 18 September 2020

    -3 Oosthuizen (15)

    Louis OosthuizenImage source, Getty Images

Louis Oosthuizen is still chugging along nicely. He recovered well from back-to-back bogeys through four and five to scramble back to level par for the day and three under overall.

That seems like a good score in much tougher conditions today.

  20. 6th (El)published at 17:18 BST 18 September 2020

    321 yards, par 4

    Coming next...

The shortest par four on the course could tempt some players to try to drive the kidney-shaped green which is well protected by a deep front bunker and a stream which meanders left of and behind the green.
