    -4 Thomas, +3 Woods, +6 Morikawa (4*)

Co-leader Justin Thomas bogeyed the last and finds the rough with his tee shot at 14, his fifth. From there, the American is only able to coax his effort into a bunker short and right of the green.

Danger for the world number three.

  3. Reed back in share of top spotpublished at 19:38 BST 18 September 2020

    -4 Reed (5*)

Patrick Reed is yet to find a fairway today and continues that streak at 14, playing as his fifth, burrowing down in the bunker instead. He hacks out of the sand but that looks a little wild.

It settles besides a tree in the rough beneath the green - a decent lie for the American, and he's up and down to save par and stay in a share of top spot. Well played.

  4. Postpublished at 19:37 BST 18 September 2020

    -2 McIlroy (3)

It's all getting a little bit loose from Rory McIlroy at present. He's in the sand again off the tee at the fourth.

Must have brought his bucket and spade with him today.

And he looks pretty frustrated with that, as his second lands left in the rough about 80 yards shy of the pin.

  5. Bogey for leader Thomaspublished at 19:36 BST 18 September 2020

    -4 Thomas, +3 Woods, +6 Morikawa (4*)

Oh, JT! Did he rush that? A par putt from close range at 13 glides wide, and he's back to four under - alongside Patrick Reed, who is having struggles of his own...

Didn't look at all smooth from Justin Thomas there.

  6. McIlroy drops backpublished at 19:30 BST 18 September 2020

    -2 McIlroy (3)

It's consecutive bogeys for the Northern Irishman who splashed out of the sand fine but then couldn't negotiate a tricky downhill putt.

It's taken about an hour for the group containing Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose and Adam Scott to get through the first three holes. Slow progress.

  7. Can I start again?published at 19:30 BST 18 September 2020

    +9 Garcia (4)

Sergio Garcia must have left his putter behind as he has just missed putts from six and two feet on his way to a triple bogey seven at the second, instantly followed by bogeys at the next two as well.

  8. Postpublished at 19:26 BST 18 September 2020

    -5 Thomas, +3 Woods, +6 Morikawa (3*)

Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa and Tiger Woods all safely on the green at the 217-yard par-three 13th.

Tiger the only one of the trio to land it short of the pin, in a little bowl, to give himself an uphill putt.

  9. Great start and finish, shame about the middlepublished at 19:25 BST 18 September 2020

    +21 Rousaud (F)

Eduard Rousaud will probably always remember his second and last shots at his first US Open but will want to blank out the bits inbetween.

The Spanish amateur holed a 130-yard wedge shot for an eagle on the first on Thursday and then finished with a five-foot birdie on his last hole today.

However, that birdie was for a 15 over 85 that left him 21 over for the tournament and rock bottom of the leaderboard.

He had eight bogeys and four double bogeys in his round today.

  10. Postpublished at 19:24 BST 18 September 2020

    -3 McIlroy, +2 Scott, +5 Rose (2)

Rory McIlroy finds the sand down the right at the third.

Not the response he was looking for after bogeying the last. It was nice enough looking shot but just not enough air on it to carry the bunker. Par would be a dream result from this spot.

  11. Ry-oh no!published at 19:23 BST 18 September 2020

    +6 Ishikawa (2*)

Japan's Ryo Ishikawa is going to be having nightmares about the 11th tonight. That's a triple bogey seven for him.

He would've slept quite well last night at two over, now he will be wishing he stayed in bed. Oh, by the way, he also bogeyed the 10th.

Two holes gone today, four over. Ouch.

  13. Reed stumbles out of top spotpublished at 19:20 BST 18 September 2020

    -4 Reed (4*)

Patrick Reed hones a five iron in on the 13th green but comes up short and right. Some tasty looking rough down the bank below the green, like a cabbage patch.

"Sit, sit," he tells his chip on to the green, but it ignores the American's demands and strolls on some.

Some 38 feet to save par for Reed here. Good effort, but it stays right.

He drops back to four under par.

  14. Postpublished at 19:19 BST 18 September 2020

    -5 Thomas, +3 Woods, +6 Morikawa (3*)

Justin Thomas has a chance to move into the outright lead here. The American starts his birdie putt left and watches it wriggle right, but that's not dropping. It's a third par on the trot, instead.

    #bbcgolf

It's a bit breezy at Winged Foot today but it could be a whole lot worse.

This very much reminds me of conditions on my first ever full round as a child.

  16. Postpublished at 19:14 BST 18 September 2020

    -5 Thomas, +3 Woods, +6 Morikawa (2*)

No matter how Tiger Woods is scoring, there's always such a satisfying sound accompanying his strike - a casual-as-you-like iron from 170 yards into the 12th green that pitches eight feet short of the pin.

Justin Thomas has the deftest of wedges to find the smooth stuff on the par-five 12th and clips on delightfully.

  17. Nervous afternoon ahead for Fowlerpublished at 19:11 BST 18 September 2020

    +6 Fowler (F*)

Rickie Fowler was comfortably sitting at one-under-par yesterday, but it's been a day to forget for the American, who came second at the US Open in 2014 and is yet to clinch a Major.

You know it's not going to be a good day when you double bogey your first hole and that's what Fowler did on the 10th. There was another double at the 17th as he carded a 77 to jump to six over.

He faces a nervous few hours seeing if he gets to play tomorrow.

  18. McIlroy drops a shotpublished at 19:11 BST 18 September 2020

    -3 McIlroy , +2 Scott, +5 Rose (2)

Rory's gone well right here after nailing his tee shot. He's left himself with a wedge back on from the first cut of rough.

Far from ideal on a hole that is playing as the most difficult on the course.

And he just can't recover it from there meaning all that good work at the first is undone. Bogey.

Still a touch better from Justin Rose, who tickles in putt for par after taking an unwanted double at the first.

  19. Spieth has awful startpublished at 19:11 BST 18 September 2020

    +5 (3*)

Jordan Spieth admitted after his round yesterday that he didn't know where his ball was going to go off the tee. That's not great when you're a 10-handicapper, never mind playing one of the toughest courses in the world.

He started his second round on three over but bogeys on the 10th and 11th have seen him drift further away from the leaders.

There's a glimmer of hope with a par on the 12th, his third. Long way to go. Dig in Jordan.

  20. Reed escapes the sandpublished at 19:07 BST 18 September 2020

    -5 Reed (3*)

How can Patrick Reed follow up that birdie at 11? He finds the sand at 12, but a cute bunker shot from the former Masters champion, sliding it up close to the pin and he taps in for par to remain at five under. Still in a share of the lead.
