    E DeChambeau, +1 Finau, +1 Johnson (13*)

Dustin Johnson is up and ready to play as Bryson DeChambeau continues his calculations on the green.

He's got a birdie chance on the way but ends up with a bogey after sliding past to the left. DJ takes a par as does Finau who is looking a tad more solid over the last couple of holes.

  3. 'I'm not unhappy'published at 17:11 BST 18 September 2020

    E Pieters (F)

Thomas Pieters has fronted up to the cameras after a back nine that saw him ship the six shots he had gained in his previous 27.

"I had a struggle on the back nine," he says matter of factly.

"I put myself out of position off the tee and missed a few short putts. But I'm not unhappy though.

"If I hit fairways on Saturday like I did on the front nine today, then there's chances for birdie."

  4. Schauffele stumblespublished at 17:09 BST 18 September 2020

    -2 Schauffele (14)

Xander Schauffele's ascent to the top of the leaderboard is checked slightly by a bogey at 14, his second of the day. And the American slides to two under par - three off the lead.

  5. Postpublished at 17:08 BST 18 September 2020

    -1 DeChambeau, +1 Finau, +1 Johnson (13*)

    Take a bow DJ.

The 2016 US Open winner finds the sand off the tee but absolutely spanks an iron shot 200 yards or so to carry the front right bunker and reach the putting surface.

  6. Mixed bag for Fleetwoodpublished at 17:00 BST 18 September 2020

    +6 Fleetwood (14)

A couple of much-needed birdies from England's Tommy Fleetwood - on the 11th and 12th - although they were wiped out by bogeys at the 10th and 13th and he is two over for the day and six over for the competition.

If he stays on this score, he will probably be one of those sweating on their futures in the US Open later today.

  7. Pieters back to where he startedpublished at 16:57 BST 18 September 2020

    E Pieters (F)

After leaking drives out to the right, it's only natural that Thomas Pieters should tug one way, way left at the last.

He's got a shot to the green though and finds the right edge but his 30-foot putt is a little wayward. Can he sink the four-footer for par?

No. Straight left off the bat. It's a miserable finish. A five and that's a four-over 74 and he's back to level par..

He wanders off the green looking thoroughly dejected after being beaten up on the back nine but level par after two rounds at a US Open is a decent start.

  8. Postpublished at 16:56 BST 18 September 2020

    -1 DeChambeau, +1 Finau, +1 Johnson (13*)

Tony Finau stops the rot as all three players card pars on the fourth.

It's been a slog so far.

  9. Leaderboardpublished at 16:54 BST 18 September 2020

Louis Oosthuizen and Xander Schauffele are now tied third with Rory, and the highest placed players currently on the course.

    -5 Thomas (18:27)

    -4 Reed (18:16)

    -3 Oosthuizen (13), Schauffele (13), McIlroy (18:27)

    -2 Wolff (11*), Kokrak (17:32), Todd (17:54), English (17:54)

    -1 Pieters (17), Westwood (15), DeChambeau (13*), Thompson (a) (17:54)

  10. Postpublished at 16:52 BST 18 September 2020

    -3 Schauffele (13)

Xander Schauffele's birdie putt at 13 has the legs but he's not quite tuned the sat nav in, it anchors down just above the pin to leave him a tap-in par.

  11. Eagle for Fitzpatrickpublished at 16:50 BST 18 September 2020

    +6 Fitzpatrick (15)

    Nothing but net!

What a shot from Matthew Fitzpatrick at the par-four 15th, firing his second shot from 146 yards straight into the cup without bouncing.

It moves him to... six over, it's been a bit of a struggle for the Englishman today. Perhaps that is the lift he needs.

So I think we can all agree that Winged Foot is a tricky course, but what's the hardest golf course you've ever played on and why?

For me it has to be Kingsbarns in Scotland, because of the number of bunkers and links conditions. Put it this way, I got my money's worth!

  13. Postpublished at 16:47 BST 18 September 2020

    -1 DeChambeau, +1 Finau, +1 Johnson (12*)

"Will it jump. No I guess it didn't," - Bryson DeChambeau doesn't seem overly pleased as he zips his second at the par-four 4th out of the thicker cut grass on the left on to the green.

DJ and Tony Finau are both in a tad closer and will have birdie chances from 20-25 feet.

  14. Birdie for Louis!published at 16:41 BST 18 September 2020

    -3 Oosthuizen (13)

    Louis OosthuizenImage source, Getty Images

Monster birdie for Louis Oosthuizen. What a gorgeous putt, in from the moment he connected with it at the par-three 13th. Straight into the heart of the green with his tee shot, pin high, and rolling his birdie chance from left to right from about 20 feet. Down you go.

He climbs to within two of the lead.

  15. 4th (Sound View)published at 16:40 BST 18 September 2020

    467 yards, par 4

The tee shot on this slight dogleg hole is partially blind. Finding the fairway will be the key to success with the green guarded by two deep bunkers on the front corners.

  16. Pieters finishing with a whimperpublished at 16:40 BST 18 September 2020

    -1 Pieters (17)

Thomas Pieters' miserable back nine is continuing. His tee shot is right again and into the four-inch deep rough. He can only advance his ball 80 yards and he's still in the cabbage.

Another swipe and he's just short of the green, the chip on is excellent but not dropping, which means he is dropping another shot. Back to one under for the Belgian.

  17. Finau's misery continuespublished at 16:37 BST 18 September 2020

    -1 DeChambeau, +1 Finau, +1 Johnson (12*)

Bryson DeChambeau likes this. Is this in? Yes it is.

    What. A. Putt.

The 27-year-old had a good 30 feet in front of him there but it was straight into the middle of the cup.

DJ picks up a comfortable par but poor old Tony Finau's nightmare run continues with a third consecutive dropped shot.

What a miserable start to the front nine.

  18. Postpublished at 16:36 BST 18 September 2020

    -3 Schauffele (11)

Oooo, Xander Schauffele gets to know those repelling greens. A touch too much spin from his bunker shot into the front of the dance floor at 12, and it wriggles back down the slope towards the fairway like a yoyo.

  19. Postpublished at 16:34 BST 18 September 2020

    +9 Mickelson (11*)

Time is running out for Phil Mickelson to save himself after yesterday's nine-over round left him in the bottom three overnight.

But it's been a much improved effort from the 50-year-old today as he has chalked up eight pars in a row after one birdie and one bogey earlier on for a level-par second round after 11 holes.

At the moment though it won't be enough and he is facing the prospect of a quiet Saturday.

  20. 3rd (Pinnacle)published at 16:29 BST 18 September 2020

    243 yards, par 3

A demanding hole made famous by the play of 1959 US Open champion Billy Casper, who purposely laid up short of the green and successfully pitched on and one-putted on the highly-contoured green in all four rounds.
