  1. Rory finally moving upwardspublished at 21:11 BST 18 September 2020

Here's Rory's eagle attempt. It's tentative. It's not in. But, it's a tap-in birdie and his second of this second round. Something to build on as he starts the back nine.

Two good approaches at 18 for Justin Thomas and Collin Morikawa - the former with a tidy pitch, the latter with a bump and run from the first cut. Tiger, meanwhile, is in the bunker.

He lands it on the smooth stuff, but watches it run away down the front of the green - like crazy golf, this. He took four shots from a similar spot on the 18th yesterday.

  3. McIlroy eagle-huntingpublished at 21:05 BST 18 September 2020

    +2 McIlroy (8)

Hello Mr McIlroy. He's only gone and followed up his drive down the ninth with a pin-seeker.

His second on the par-five hole bounces on the front edge of the green and pulls up pin-high. There's a wry look on his face as he hands his club back to his caddie.

Nine feet for a much-needed eagle.

    -3 Reed (9*)

What a shot that is from Patrick Reed. Wonderful control to zip it up towards the flag with the cutest of chips. Should save him par.

HIs caddie lies on his stomach to have a look and check out the line, luckily he's back to his feet by the time Reed rolls in for par to stay at three under.

David Dean - Torrequebrada in Spain. I was off 14 but scored 110! Incredible height differences on holes and palm trees in bunkers.

David Knowles - The PGA Catalunya in Spain, almost impossible for an average golfer, especially when its wet.

    +2 McIlroy (8)

Buoyed by that incredible par-saver on the eighth, Rory McIlroy creams his drive on the par-five ninth 363.8 yards down the middle of the fairway. He's left himself 195 yards to the pin.

There's been three eagles on the ninth today. Bryson DeChambeau's came at his last hole and catapulted him up to what is now a share of the lead. I wonder if he's enjoying watching this carnage, or if he's busy plotting how he's going to approach Saturday.

Right then Rory, can you repair some of the damage?

  9. Bogey run continues for Thomaspublished at 20:58 BST 18 September 2020

    -1 Thomas, +6 Woods, +4 Morikawa (8*)

Collin Morikawa, fresh from his first major victory, is sticking a round together today - he birdies 17 to go two under for the day and four over for the tournament, which leaves him seven off the lead.

He is one of only five players co currently sit under par today.

Justin Thomas is moving in the other direction. A fourth bogey in five holes. Back to one under.

  10. Wonder putt helps McIlroy save parpublished at 20:52 BST 18 September 2020

    +2 McIlroy (8)

According to a tool on the US Open website the probability of Rory McIlroy finishing in the top 10 has tumbled from 71% after the first hole to 29% after eight.

Talk about a reversal of fortunes.

Will this help him turn it around though. The Northern Irishman drains a monster 30-feet-plus putt to make the most unlikely of pars on eight.

His round today has gone birdie, bogey, bogey, double bogey, bogey, par, bogey, par.

  11. Postpublished at 20:52 BST 18 September 2020

    -3 Reed (8*)

Uh oh. Patrick Reed watches his approach at 18, his ninth, repel back down the stepped green.

Left it short, and back it came. Not the first player to come unstuck there.

A tricky up and down to come.

    -2 Thomas, +6 Woods, +5 Morikawa (7*)

Justin Thomas tending to his allotment at 17 after another wayward tee shot, a patch of chunky rough to contend with on this 501-yard par four - he needs stop the bogey rot, after dropping three shots in his previous four holes.

  15. Reed slips back into two-way tiepublished at 20:41 BST 18 September 2020

    -3 Reed (8*)

Patrick Reed should've packed his bucket and spade. He's spent a lot of time in the sand today.

The American clips out from one of the bunkers guarding the green, but can't make it up and down in time to save par, with his 25-footer creeping wide.

Back to three under, level with Bryson DeChambeau to make it a crowd-pleasing two-way tie at the top.

  16. Bogey for Thomaspublished at 20:36 BST 18 September 2020

    -2 Thomas, +6 Woods, +5 Morikawa (7*)

Justin Thomas is throwing shots away like a bartender at Spring Break.

A good attempt from the world number three with his par-saving putt, but the damage was already done earlier in the hole after finding the rough with his tee shot.

He taps in for bogey and drops to two under.

Tiger Woods, meanwhile, double bogeys after wobbling a close-range bogey putt wide.

  17. McIlroy drops another shotpublished at 20:34 BST 18 September 2020

    +2 McIlroy, +5 Rose (7)

Disastrous. Rory McIllroy drops another shot on one of the supposedly easiest holes.

  18. Postpublished at 20:33 BST 18 September 2020

    -4 Reed (7*)

It's windy in New York, and that coupled with some tricky pin positions is causing havoc for the field.

Patrick Reed, the leader, is in the sand at 17 and fails to stick it down on the smooth stuff from there.

  19. Postpublished at 20:31 BST 18 September 2020

    +1 McIlroy (6)

That's not great from Rory McIllroy at the seventh, coming up well short of the green and flopping his ball onto the false front.

It's exactly the same mistake as Dustin Johnson made earlier and he paid for it with a dropped shot.

Meanwhile Justin Rose is on in one and still going along at five over for the championship after making pars on the last five holes.

If only he'd been able to avoid that horrible double whammy on the first. If he can manage a sprinkling of birdies he could well be sticking around for the weekend with the projected cut currently around six over.

  20. Postpublished at 20:28 BST 18 September 2020

Just six players remain in the red for the tournament, only four of those are under par for the day...
