  1. Bogey for Rosepublished at 21:51 BST 18 September 2020

    +6 Rose (11)

It's going to be a tense couple of hours for Justin Rose, the 2013 US Open champion.

Rose has just bogeyed the 370-yard par-four 11th after he missed a nine-foot putt for par with it drifting left of the hole.

The Englishman is now on six over, flirting with danger. Three over on Thursday, three over so far on Friday.

  2. 'Grinding and struggling'published at 21:46 BST 18 September 2020

    Andrew Murray
    BBC Radio 5 live commentator

The conditions are difficult. Pace of play is slow because people are grinding and struggling and playing more shots.

  3. Postpublished at 21:46 BST 18 September 2020

    E Thomas, +4 Morikawa, +8 Woods (10*)

Collin Morikawa throws a blade of grass into the air and watches it catch the wind, like a fly-half about to kick a conversion. He doesn't get the read from the rough, hooking it into another patch of thick cabbage to the side of the green.

Tiger Woods steps away from his approach and says he'll wait out a gust of wind - not too long, 'ey Tiger. He eventually slaps one up into the bunker.

  4. Kokrak closing inpublished at 21:45 BST 18 September 2020

    -1 Kokrak (15)

Jason Kokrak is buzzing around the upper echelons of the leaderboard after successive birdies on the 14th and 15th. The 35-year-old is playing in his fourth US Open and has a best finish of joint 37th.

He had a two-under 68 yesterday and is only one over for his round today.

  5. Birdie for Wallacepublished at 21:44 BST 18 September 2020

    +3 Wallace (14*)

Lee Westwood is the leading Englishman in the clubhouse on three over, but Matt Wallace has four holes to change that.

He started round two on level par and, like, Westwood, is now on three over.

Starting from the 10th, Wallace hit bogeys at the 14th, 15th, 17th and third but has clawed one back with a birdie just now at the fifth and is now tied 24th.

  6. Postpublished at 21:41 BST 18 September 2020

    -4 Reed (11*)

Lovely tee shot from Patrick Reed into the par-three third green - barely left the ground. No need to lay up like Billy Casper there...

  7. McIlroy's struggles returnpublished at 21:40 BST 18 September 2020

    +3 McIrloy (11)

    Rory McIlroyImage source, Getty Images

Rory McIlroy's brief bit of sunshine has gone. The dark clouds are descending again.

The Northern Irishman is slightly off target from the tee but that's enough to hurt him. He scuds his second across the fairway into more deep stuff.

He's hacking out from there and leaving himself a 10-footer for par.

Another shot gone. That's six bogeys and a double today and he's only played 11 holes. A big puff of the cheeks. He knows this round is getting away from him.

  8. Double bogey for Thomaspublished at 21:38 BST 18 September 2020

    E Thomas; +4 Morikawa; +8 Woods (10*)

    Justin ThomasImage source, Getty Images

Justin Thomas, from the middle of the fairway, looks to be heading towards the bunker on the left side of the first, but just about manages to stay out, although he has some rough to now deal with.

He is left with a 28-foot putt to save par and he can't convert it. There's no luck either from seven feet and that is a horrible hole for him, a double bogey. Level par for the tournament after starting day two on five under.

Tiger Woods needs something a bit special and nearly produces it with a 22-yard putt attempt, but it just stays out. That would've been a birdie, but par it is as he stays on eight over.

  9. Leaderboardpublished at 21:37 BST 18 September 2020

Patrick back to the top with a birdie.

    -4 Reed (10*)

    -3 DeChambeau (F)

    -2 Cabrera Bello (F), English (12*), Thomas (9*)

    E Pieters (F), Schauffele (F), Wolff (F), Kokrak (14)

  10. Reed scrambles parpublished at 21:34 BST 18 September 2020

    -4 Reed (11)

Patrick Reed's short game in the opening two rounds has been outstanding. He rescues himself again on the par-four 11th with a delightful bunker shot that leaves himself a tap-in par.

  11. 'I'm loving watching Reed'published at 21:31 BST 18 September 2020

    Iain Carter
    Radio 5 live commentator

I'm loving watching Patrick Reed. His shot-making ability is such a vital commodity for this golf course, as you have to have imagination.

  12. Postpublished at 21:28 BST 18 September 2020

    -2 Thomas; +4 Morikawa; +8 Woods (9*)

On the first, Tiger Woods find the rough off the tee, as does Justin Thomas. But Woods produces a decent recovery with his second effort.

  13. McIlroy bogeyspublished at 21:24 BST 18 September 2020

    +2 McIlroy (10)

Back to a spot of bother for Rory McIlroy on the par-three 10th, messing about in the rough until he finally clips one on to the green but he's got a five-footer for bogey.

Nails it. Just the one drop shot. Could have been so much worse.

  14. 1st (Genesis)published at 21:23 BST 18 September 2020

    451 yards, par 4

So next up for Woods, Thomas and Morikawa is the first.

The hole's real challenge lies in the treacherous green which slopes severely from back to front.

Most approach shots will be left short of the pin to leave an uphill putt.

  15. New leaderpublished at 21:21 BST 18 September 2020

    -4 Reed (10*)

    Patrick ReedImage source, Getty Images

Patrick Reed is yo-yoing in and out of the sole lead. He's just birdied the par-four first, his 10th hole, to go one clear of the field.

  16. 'The members weren't happy'published at 21:21 BST 18 September 2020

    Iain Carter
    Radio 5 live commentator

The word we're getting is that the Winged Foot members were not impressed with 21 players beating par yesterday.

  17. Double bogey for Woodspublished at 21:20 BST 18 September 2020

    -2 Thomas; +4 Morikawa; +8 Woods (9*)

Are we going to have Tiger Woods failing to make the cut? That's a double bogey for him after a trip to the sand at the 18th and that sees him at eight over, with the projected cut being at six over. He's dropped four shots on the 18th hole in two days, both times from exactly the same position, short and right.

Justin Thomas, after a stinking run of four bogeys in five holes, picks up a birdie at the 18th and the day one leader is back at two under.

  18. Postpublished at 21:19 BST 18 September 2020

    -2 English (12*)

Harris English is doing a good job of hanging around. The American is two under par and finding the green on the par-three third with his tee shot. He's on the wrong level though. Tough two-putt coming up.

  19. Get involved - Toughest course you've played?published at 21:12 BST 18 September 2020

    #bbcgolf

Andy - Scarborough. Elevated tee right on the coast. The mist rolled in off the North Sea and couldn't see 10 yards in front of you. Definition of a blind tee shot.

  20. It's brutalpublished at 21:12 BST 18 September 2020

    Andrew Murray
    BBC Radio 5 live commentator

There's a stiff breeze swirling around, the greens are firming up and the pin positions are more difficult. It's brutal out there!
