  1. Postpublished at 22:21 BST 18 September 2020

    -1 Thomas, +6 Morikawa, +10 Woods (12*)

    Almost, almost from JT.

The world number three has been having to grind his way through Winged Foot, but faced with a the ball in play for once he comes inches away from chipping in for birdie from the front of the green.

  2. Postpublished at 22:18 BST 18 September 2020

    -2 Harris (16*), -1 Kokrak (17)

Two of the more unfashionable American names on the leaderboard are still going along nicely.

Jason Kokrak has rolled in a birdie putt from 15 feet to get back to one under, while Harris English is continuing to give himself birdie opportunities.

His 20-footer on the sixth (his 15th) agonisingly pulled up a revolution short, while he knocked one from a similar distance just past on the next. That's nine successive pars though.

  3. Can Pepperell turn it around?published at 22:18 BST 18 September 2020

    +11 Pepperell (9*)

Five dropped shots came Eddie Pepperell's way in his opening seven holes on round number two.

However, his last two holes have both produced birdies - sinking a 14-foot putt on the 17th and then another from six feet a hole later.

The Englishman is at three over for the day at the turn and 11 over in total.

  4. Postpublished at 22:17 BST 18 September 2020

    -4 Reed (13*)

Patrick Reed has the swagger of a man who is leading a major.

He cracks one up the fifth fairway but comes unstuck into the wind with his approach, landing it in a greenside bunker.

Been pretty handy from the sand so far today, mind.

  5. Leaderboardpublished at 22:11 BST 18 September 2020

    Patrick still stays on top.

    -4 Reed (13*)

    -3 DeChambeau (F)

    -2 Cabrera Bello (F), English (15*)

    -1 Thomas (12*)

    E Pieters (F), Schauffele (F), Wolff (F), Kokrak (16)

  6. Six bogeys in a row for McDowellpublished at 22:11 BST 18 September 2020

    +14 McDowell (11*)

It's all going wrong for 2010 champion Graeme McDowell. Six over on Thursday meant there was no room for errors for the Northern Irishman.

But Winged Foot has bit hard on Friday and McDowell is currently on a horrible run of six bogeys in a row. When you just want the day to end, you don't want to have to play another seven holes.

  7. What the good lord givethpublished at 22:11 BST 18 September 2020

    +3 McIlroy (13)

Rory McIlroy just can't get a run going here.

His tee shot to the par-three 13th finds a greenside bunker and he cannot scramble a par, pushing his six-foot putt right.

  8. Reed saves parpublished at 22:09 BST 18 September 2020

    -4 Reed (13*)

One leg at the top of the slope, the other down by his ball, Patrick Reed does well to chop an effort up the bank and on to the green, running it within par-saving distance of the pin.

He sinks it, and holds on to that one-stroke lead.

  9. Thomas climbspublished at 22:08 BST 18 September 2020

    -1 Thomas, +6 Morikawa, +10 Woods (12*)

Finally, a bit of relief for Justin Thomas! A wonderful birdie after that superb tee shot on the par-three third to move him back to one under par, that's three off the lead... for now.

Tiger Woods drops another, and will be getting the weekend off.

  10. Poulter facing an exitpublished at 22:05 BST 18 September 2020

    +10 Poulter (11)

Dropping six shots in the space of four holes could mean it is a Saturday off incoming for Ian Poulter.

That was a triple bogey seven on the fifth, a bogey next up and a double at the eighth.

Ten over for Poulter with seven to play.

  11. Birdie for Rorypublished at 22:03 BST 18 September 2020

    +2 McIlroy (12)

Rory McIlroy isn't giving up the fight here. Despite another tee shot plunging into the rough, he manages to put himself in position with his second to leave a wedge into the green.

He hits a corker. Six feet for birdie. In she pops. Do I detect a bit more of that Rory bounce as he departs the green?

  12. Postpublished at 22:00 BST 18 September 2020

    -4 Reed (12*)

Tidy lie for Patrick Reed in the rough besides the fairway, but he catches a tuft as he tries to run it up on to the green. It clicks into a gear too high and sprints all the way off the back of the smooth stuff.

Bryson DeChambeau will be licking his lips.

  13. Hatton needs to fight hardpublished at 22:00 BST 18 September 2020

    +9 Hatton (13)

On Thursday, England's Tyrrell Hatton was a very, very early leader with back-to-back birdies to begin his tournament.

But he has work to do if he is to be back out on the course tomorrow.

He was four over after day one, but after only seven holes of day two that had become nine over - including a double bogey on the seventh - and that's where he still is after 13.

  14. Postpublished at 21:58 BST 18 September 2020

    E Thomas, +6 Morikawa, +9 Woods (11*)

Justin Thomas, oh my. Off the deck for the American at the 224-yard par-three third and he nails it just beyond the pin. That's just showing off...

  15. Bogey for Woodspublished at 21:56 BST 18 September 2020

    E Thomas, +6 Morikawa, +9 Woods (11*)

Make that nine over for Tiger, with the cut line disappearing into the distance - he's unable to salvage par after finding the bunker at the second, his 11th.

Justin Thomas is grinding, looking very frustrated, but he's down for par.

Collin Morikawa's under-par streak comes to a halt. Double bogey, back level for the day and out to six over for the week.

  17. English trio battling to stay in itpublished at 21:55 BST 18 September 2020

    +7 Sullivan (16), Willett (13), Waring (13*)

There's a trio of English players all out there on seven over. They are Andy Sullivan (two holes to play), Danny Willett (five to play), Paul Waring (five to play).

The cut is currently at seven over so no room for any mistakes from those three from now on.

  18. Pars are good, pars are goodpublished at 21:54 BST 18 September 2020

    -2 Harris (14*)

Harris English is ticking off the holes nicely.

He was at four under after four holes today, but then two dropped shots checked his progress. Since then though, he's had seven successive pars.

And as we're finding out, pars are very good today.

  19. 'Woods on a knife edge'published at 21:52 BST 18 September 2020

    Iain Carter
    Radio 5 live commentator

Woods is at +8 and currently the cut is +7, so Woods is on a knife edge.

  20. Postpublished at 21:51 BST 18 September 2020

    -4 Reed (12*)

Patrick Reed runs his long birdie putt up the sloped green, but it sticks the brakes on a touch short.

A little bit of work to do to save par - eight feet or so, down it goes with a thud. Nice.
