  1. Tough timespublished at 23:04 BST 18 September 2020

So who said Winged Foot was too easy? Not for these big names...

    • +13 (tied 121st) - Phil Mickelson, Jordan Spieth
    • +15 (tied 134th) - Sergio Garcia, Graeme McDowell

Stenson, Willett, Poulter, Kuchar, Woods and Spieth are still in action.

  2. Pars looking good for Rorypublished at 23:02 BST 18 September 2020

    +3 McIlroy (16)

What can Rory do on the 16th? Roll his ball up to a couple of feet is the answer.

It's been a strange round that promised much after his first-hole birdie and then threatened to disintegrate after he shipped six shots in his next six holes.

Two birdies in among three more bogeys around the turn have been followed by pars to finish. And this is one more hole ticked off.

He's still just six shots back.

  3. Postpublished at 22:59 BST 18 September 2020

    -3 Reed (16*)

Patrick Reed is on the eighth, his 17th of the day. Middle of the fairway and he drills his ball to the front edge of the green. A hop and a skip and it nestles 15 feet beyond the hole. Yet another birdie look coming up.

  4. Bogey for Woodspublished at 22:57 BST 18 September 2020

    +12 Woods (15*)

Woods has a 25-footer to save par on the sixth, but it drifts to the left and that's another one added to his total. That's 12 over and an earlier end to his weekend than expected.

  5. McIlroy chasing birdiespublished at 22:55 BST 18 September 2020

    +3 McIlroy (15)

Rory McIlroy is finishing strongly. Another fairway found from the tee on the 16th and with just 140 yards to the pin, he'll have birdie in mind.

No Rory. No no no. His shot is straight at the flag but it hits the green about 25 feet short of the pin and it's not getting any closer. A poor judgement from there and Rory knows it, slapping his clubhead in frustration.

  6. Par to finish for Englishpublished at 22:53 BST 18 September 2020

    -2 English (F)

Harris English is on his last hole and has a putt for a birdie to finish in a share of the lead. The par specialist is at it again though.

The putt stays right and that's 11 pars on the spin and a terrific level-par round.

  7. Woods to the beachpublished at 22:51 BST 18 September 2020

    +11 Woods (14*)

Tiger Woods is in all sorts of trouble. He goes from some rough on the left side of the sixth to the sand on the right side. Thereare some big names heading out after two rounds.

Barring some late genius, he's going to be one of them.

  8. Reed playing in the roughpublished at 22:48 BST 18 September 2020

    -3 Reed (16*)

Patrick Reed is chuntering to himself after tugging his tee shot on the short seventh into the cabbage.

Captain America has been sensational with a wedge in his hand today but not this time. He leaves his first one in the thick stuff and has to have another swipe. He nudges it down to tap-in, but he's dropping back to three under. Again.

Getting there: Kisumu, Kenya. During the rainy season, water levels from the nearby Lake Victoria rise and claim one half of the fairways. Hippos are forced to graze further inland, stepping over the greens leaving craters. Spitting cobras are displaced and find new homes in the rough.

  10. A good time to end with a birdiepublished at 22:45 BST 18 September 2020

    +5 Wallace (F*)

Matt Wallace's second round is over and he has probably done enough to have earned a third and fourth. A level par 70 on Thursday is followed by a five over 75 on Friday.

The Englishman would have been getting very nervous when he came up with a bogey at the seventh - the 16th hole of his round - followed by a double at the eighth. But he regained his composure on the last with a birdie to continue his adventure.

  11. Another par for Rorypublished at 22:41 BST 18 September 2020

    +3 McIlroy (15)

Rory McIlroy is on the par-four 15th green in two shots, 20 feet from the hole but it's a tricky downhill affair, across the green.

It's looking too far left but then starts to bend at the death, coming to rest almost behind the hole.

That's two pars on the trot. I suspect he'd take three more to leave himself still very much in contention for the weekend.

  12. Get involved - Hardest course you've played?published at 22:39 BST 18 September 2020

Hamish McNaughton - Hardest course I've played in 50 years was playing Trump International in Aberdeen.

  13. Reed retakes leadpublished at 22:39 BST 18 September 2020

    -4 Reed (15*)

Patrick Reed is going about his business - he immediately wipes out that bogey at the last to restore his lead with three holes to play.

The American took on the green off the tee at the shorter sixth, his 15th, and made it down in three for a birdie that puts him in the sole lead.

  14. Kokrak in contentionpublished at 22:37 BST 18 September 2020

    -2 Harris (17), -1 Kokrak (F)

Another hole, another par for Harris English. He's just got the one to play.

Jason Kokrak is already in the hutch. He parred the last to post a one-over 71. He's played more than 200 tournaments without picking up a winner's cheque. Could this be his week?

  15. Mixed fortunes for Scotspublished at 22:36 BST 18 September 2020

    +6 MacIntyre; +7 Scott (11*)

Scotland's Robert MacIntyre has just hauled himself the right side of the dotted line on the scoreboard thanks to a two-foot putt on the second.

However, his compatriot Sandy Scott, who we recently mentioned, has just fallen in the opposite direction after a bogey at the second - his second in two holes.

  16. Postpublished at 22:35 BST 18 September 2020

Three of the six players under par at the moment are back in the clubhouse - Bryson DeChambeau, Rafa Cabrera Bello and Jason Kokrak. Grab yourselves a cuppa, lads.

Patrick Reed, Harris English and Justin Thomas are still out there grinding - how many will survive in the red by the close of play today?

  17. Spieth heading home for the weekendpublished at 22:33 BST 18 September 2020

    +13 Spieth (14*)

Patrick Reed is playing with Jordan Spieth, US Open champion in 2015.

Spieth won't be around for the weekend though. He's had eight bogeys and a double today and is way beyond the cut mark at 13 over par.

After yesterday's opening round, he said he had no idea where the ball was going when he hit it off the tee.

The three-time major champion is having a bit of a slump but he's only 27, plenty of time to resurrect his career..

  18. Can amateur Scott make the cut?published at 22:31 BST 18 September 2020

    +6 Scott (10*)

What a couple of days it has been so far for 22-year-old Scottish amateur Sandy Scott. After 28 holes he's still in contention to advance into another couple of days' play.

He's currently tied 54th with the top 60 plus ties making the cut.

  19. Reed slides to three underpublished at 22:27 BST 18 September 2020

    -3 Reed (14*)

The sand finally does for Patrick Reed. Like a toddler on a windy beach with a sandy sandwich.

One too many trips to the bunker for the former Masters champ, and this time he can't make it up and down for par - he bogeys, slipping to three under in the process and handing Bryson DeChambeau a slice of top spot once more.

  20. At least it's not a bogeypublished at 22:26 BST 18 September 2020

    +3 McIlroy (14)

Rory McIlroy finds the fairway with his tee shot down the 14th and that means he has a rare opportunity to go after the pin with his second.

The Northern Irishman takes full advantage, firing in to seven feet. But he can't hole the putt. Par it is and on he goes.
