Lak: Nishino left too many good players on the bench. Can’t be doing that in such a crucial game.

Making six changes did catch me off guard a bit

    Japan 0-1 Poland

Kamil Grosicki flicks a header wide of the goal. Robert Lewandowski, standing behind him, indicates that he should have left the ball.

Lewandowski has never scored at a World Cup - this is the first (and perhaps only) one that he has played in.

Michael: Have been impressed in this tournament by the teams that have already been out or had slim chances to qualify like Morocco, Peru, Costa Rica, South Korea and Poland that still gave 100% in their last games.

  6. YELLOW CARDpublished at 67 mins

    Japan 0-1 Poland

Japan defender Tomoaki Makino fouls Robert Lewandowski and gets booked. Yellow cards only come into play if Colombia score against Senegal.

  7. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 66 mins

    Japan 0-1 Poland

Japan bring on Real Betis winger Takashi Inui and Takashi Usami, who looked decent today, comes off.

That means it'll be Keisuke Honda OR Shinji Kagawa to come on (presuming one of them does).

Khan: Don't understand the Japanese coach. Leaves Honda (best player by a mile) on bench and a few others. Kagawa, Ueda to name a few.

Poland have been given renewed confidence and Kamil Grosicki crosses - albeit wide.

The camera zones in on a Japanese fan checking the Group H table on his phone. Oh oh.

  12. Japan not qualifying as it standspublished at 16:21 BST 28 June 2018

    Japan 0-1 Poland

That goal for Poland is great news for Senegal and Colombia but awful for Japan.

As it stands, both teams in the other game are going through as Japan drop from first to third on goal difference.

    Wow.

But a goal in the other game could change everything again.

Japan are going to have to go for it now and Takashi Usami's cross is headed clear.

It must be time for Keisuke Honda and Shinji Kagawa soon.

It's a good well-directed free-kick. He's got so much time and space, a lovely finish. Everyone just let him run. No pressure on him whatsoever. He's still got to finish, mind, and he does it well.

GOAL - Japan 0-1 Polandpublished at 59 mins

    Jan Bednarek

BIG! As things stand Japan are going out.

Rafal Kurzawa lifts a long free-kick into the box and Southampton defender Jan Bednarek, winning only his sixth cap, is left unmarked to just volley the ball past the keeper who stood no chance.

Worth a try. Wasn't a bad effort from Makino. In relation to the game, one of the better ones.

    Japan 0-0 Poland

Japan winger Takashi Usami has been lively and wins another corner off Kamil Glik.

Defender Tomoaki Makino tries a bicycle kick from the corner, but he's no Cristiano Ronaldo/Gareth Bale and it's wide.

Having said that about a goal for drama a minute ago, a Japan goal would probably make things less dramatic even.

    Japan 0-0 Poland

Just one goal in any of these games would be welcome from a drama point of view.

If a Japanese player got a straight red card by the way, then Senegal will go top of this group.

Not sure England will be too worried about playing Japan, Senegal or Colombia based on these performances so far today.
