Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, speaking to TNT Sports: "I thought we were outstanding, a really, really good performance. We kept the intensity up. The moment at the end takes that in a negative light but one of our best performances."

On the Barcelona penalty: "I think it is soft but Malik makes contact.

"We had our shape, there's no way we should concede that goal. We will look at it but I don't want it to override the 93 minutes before that, in which we were quality.

"I thought we had enough to score before we did. The game showed we are capable but we know we probably have to give more going to their stadium. We are capable of doing it but we will need to be at our very best.

"It is my job to try and pick them up. We have unfortunately had to do that a few times this season but our strength of character should never be in doubt. We will be ready by the time the next game comes round.

"We believe in ourselves and our capability and we have shown that today."

Right, Tottenham weren't the only English team in action this evening... shall we look at some Newcastle reaction?

Tottenham have a huge injury list, but so do other clubs. That is not an excuse.

The minimum requirement is maximum effort and Spurs did not even look like they knew which way they were playing.

It is about attitude and application and that is just not there at Tottenham.

I'm a Spurs supporter and tonight is a night to forget. I have no words for the current state the club is in. If we are going to stay up then Igor is not the answer.

This does not seem like a place that Igor Tudor can rescue Spurs from. But who can?

It was a horrible game but Tottenham are such an easy team to play against. They do not look like they want to wear the shirt and there is no team spirit.

If you have no confidence, then do not play. That is what you are paid for - to create and do things, and work hard.

  7. 'Tottenham players look lost'published at 22:17 GMT 10 March

    FT: Atletico Madrid 5-2 Tottenham

    Steve McManaman
Former Liverpool and Real Madrid winger on TNT Sports

They look lost, a lot of the players, don't they? Of course, they're trying their heart out, they don't want to be in a relegation battle, they know what Tottenham is all about.

They know what it is all about but with the injury problems they've had - and they've had more tonight - it just seems to be piling on, one after the other.

Now they have to go to Anfield at the weekend and their three central defenders were off today and Palhinha went off with concussion, so I don't know if they can play.

Tonight, forget about the result of the game, the overall optics have made things a lot, lot worse. I didn't like the manager's behaviour tonight.

On Antonín Kinsky being taken off after 17 minutes:

The manager certainly has not helped his case. Nobody will understand where he is at unless you are a goalkeeper. It is a lonely place.

It will be soul-destroying for Kinsky. I would not be surprised if he was in tears. It is a difficult thing to handle.

It is selfish from the manager - he knows he will not be here for long. I have never seen that in my whole career. It is clearly for self-preservation and with no consideration for the young goalkeeper.

17 minutes, five touches, three goals conceded, one substitution.

It was a night to forget for Antonin Kinsky, but do you feel some sympathy for the 22-year-old Czech?

This has been a disappointing night for Tottenham. The important thing was to have some kind of confident performance.

They were devoid of confidence - it was awful.

Igor Tudor is not the right man and is not in the right place.

You need someone to put their arm around players and not criticise the players. You don't need the players turning against you.

You need to get the best out of what is in front of you and Igor Tudor has not done that.

Can't complain about the penalty decision, but it felt like the referee would play on until Barca scored. He was giving them everything all game.

    It's over.

Remarkably, given the start they made to that game, Spurs are not entirely out of this tie. But this is another terrible result that won't do their confidence any good whatsoever.

It's a fourth defeat in four games for manager Igor Tudor.

    Atalanta 1-6 Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich are going to take some beating.

The visitors ran Atalanta absolutely ragged and the only surprise was the margin of victory was not wider.

Josip Stanisic, Michael Olise and Serge Gnabry made it 3-0 after just 25 minutes and though Marco Carnesecchi made a series of saves to keep the deficit down and Gnabry shook the bar, Nicolas Jackson rounded-off a devastating break, Olise curled an even-better second and sub Jamal Musiala turned in the sixth before Mario Pasalic's injury-time reply.

Harry Kane remained on the bench throughout. He'll be furious. He could have had five or six in a game like this.
