  1. That'll be it for Rahmpublished at 19:04 BST 19 June

    Rahm +6 (78), Rose +1 (70), Spieth +3 (70)

This will go down as one of the worst rounds of Jon Rahm’s career.

He came into today as the only player to register a bogey-free opening round.

Seven bogeys and a double bogey make for unpleasant reading.

Five straight holes on the back nine saw dropped shots.

A birdie chance on the final hole would have given him some slight hope, but it rolls past.

That will be the last we see of the 2021 champion this week.

Jordan Spieth pars the final hole to stay inside the cut line, while Justin Rose will be disappointed not to have gone lower.

  2. Koepka scramblingpublished at 19:02 BST 19 June

    Koepka +3, Young +2 (1*)

Two-time US Open champion Brooks Koepka is up and running with a scrambling par on the 10th hole. From a prime position in the fairway, he chunked his second shot and watched it roll back towards him down one of the many slopes protecting the greens.

Cameron Young, who has finished top-10 in one-third of 21 major appearances, misses a mid-range birdie putt.

  3. Can marquee group make up ground?published at 19:02 BST 19 June

Rory McIlroy knows what it's like to look up and see Wyndham Clark at the top of the leaderboard.

The American denied McIlroy at the 2023 US Open at LACC and has set an intimidating halfway target here.

McIlroy finished bogey-bogey yesterday and can ill afford to fritter away shots in quick succession this evening as he starts six back.

Ludvig Aberg and Tommy Fleetwood are in the same boat. Of course, Fleetwood shot a 66 and a 63 around Shinnecock in 2018, so the Englishman is more than capable of emerging from the pack to give Clark something to think about.

Should be good fun following this group.

  4. 'I'll absolutely watch the football' - Fitzpatrickpublished at 18:59 BST 19 June

    Fitzpatrick -3 (70)

No leaderboard watching for Matt Fitzpatrick tonight.

After carding a second-round 70, the 2022 US Open champion plans to put the feet up and watch the World Cup while the late wave takes on Shinnecock.

  5. 'Boring golf' - Clark on why he's leadingpublished at 18:50 BST 19 June

    Clark -7 (69)

Leader Wyndham Clark has been speaking to Sky Sports: "I made some big par saves and some nice long ones. It’s been very boring golf right now, which is nice and kinda good for a US Open.

On what it'll take to win: "I’m going to have to clean up a little bit. I didn’t make too many putts from eight to 15 feet and I started losing my driver a little. If I can hit it in the fairway, I can be pretty deadly so I’m going to work on that.

"Then, it's patience. It’s the US Open, you’ll get bad lies and some bad breaks. You have to handle it and move forward."

On how his game has turned around: "After having a terrible year last year, [I was] really motivated to work really hard on my golf swing. I started making putts and then all the confidence came.

"Things on and off the golf course are good and I’m in a happy place. Usually when you don’t have much clutter, you play good golf."

As a lover of the traditionally penalising setup of US Open courses, it’s a bit disappointing to see players repeatedly miss the (very wide) fairways and still be able to find the green with somewhat ease. Doesn’t appear to be that much of a premium on accurate hitting.

  7. MacIntyre faces nervous waitpublished at 18:48 BST 19 June

    MacIntyre +4 (74)

Bob MacIntyre needed a birdie to make sure he would be inside the cut, but his putt sails past the hole.

He finishes with par and now faces a nervous wait as the afternoon wave head out.

The forecast is for the wind to pick up a little, making conditions a little trickier for the later starters.

  8. Stevens dropspublished at 18:47 BST 19 June

    Stevens -2 (2)

After a great start to his round, Sam Stevens immediately hands that shot back on the long par-three second.

Just the 262 yards today and Stevens finds the front edge of the green, but he's 80 feet from the hole and takes three more shots from there.

  9. Postpublished at 18:46 BST 19 June

    Rahm +6, Rose +1, Spieth +3 (17)

Jordan Spieth making the cut over Jon Rahm was not what many would have predicted.

Spieth holds his nerve to hole his putt for par, while Rahm misses out on a birdie that he likely needed.

  10. Schauffele signs for 66published at 18:41 BST 19 June

    Schauffele -3 (66), Thomas -1 (68)

Xander Schauffele misses a golden opportunity to cut Wyndham Clark's lead to three.

After a 363-yard drive down nine, he knocks it to seven feet but misses the putt to match Collin Morikawa's 65.

But that's still a superb move from the 2024 Open and USPGA champ.

Schauffele's career scoring average at the US Open was 70.351 across 37 rounds coming into today - and a 66 is going to help that number.

Definitely a danger man over the weekend.

Playing alongside Schauffele, Justin Thomas gets it round in 68, capping a fine day's work with a birdie at the ninth. He moves under par for the tournament and is by no means out of contention.

  11. Postpublished at 18:39 BST 19 June

    Niemann +3 (65)

Joaquin Niemann made a septuple-bogey 11 on Thursday that included a two-shot penalty for throwing a club.

But the Chilean has just signed for five-under 65 and looks to be on course to become the first player to make a cut at the US Open after making a 10 or worse on a hole in the opening two rounds sinnce Bill Mehlhorn, who carded a 10 in the first round in 1929.

This could be set up for a cracking weekend if the later starters can make inroads into the lead. Come on the Brits.

Great to see Matt Fitzpatrick staying in the mix. He's a very tough competitor. Real Yorkshire determination.

  13. Double trouble for Bobpublished at 18:36 BST 19 June

    MacIntyre +4 (17*)

Bob MacIntyre is now in danger of missing the cut after a double bogey.

One hole to go and a birdie will make sure he is fine.

The cut mark is currently at five over par and there are plenty of players sweating around that mark right now. The top 60 and ties will be back to play the final two rounds this weekend.

  14. Rahm set to miss cutpublished at 18:33 BST 19 June

    Rahm +6, Rose +1, Spieth +3 (16)

Jon Rahm was four shots back from the lead at the end of play yesterday.

    He was a genuine contender.

Bunker trouble sees him record a double bogey. Four bogeys in a row, and now a double, leave him three shots outside the cut line.

Incredible. He needs some serious magic to stay alive.

Jordan Spieth makes a birdie to get inside the cut line.

  15. Early birdie for Stevenspublished at 18:25 BST 19 June

    Stevens -3 (1)

And as Wyndham Clark finishes off, Sam Stevens heads out. The American, who hit a two-under 68 to end round one four shots off the lead, is still four off the lead after hole one today.

That's because he's just rolled in a 20-foot birdie on the first.

  16. DJ faces anxious waitpublished at 18:24 BST 19 June

    D Johnson +3 (77), Woodland E (73)

I've followed the trials and tribulations of Dustin Johnson and Gary Woodland all the way round today so will close off properly.

DJ has recovered supremely from that +4 on the 16th and almost finishes with a birdie of his own. A horror stretch when he was in second place leaves him at +3 and on the cut line.

It's a final par for Gary Woodland who is level for the tournament and will certainly be here tomorrow.

  17. Clark closes with fine birdiepublished at 18:22 BST 19 June

    Clark -7 (69)

    What a way to finish.

Wyndham Clark has only gone and trundled in for birdie from 33 feet. He didn't seem to believe it would reach, but in it crept to cap a very composed one-under 69.

It likely gives him a four-shot lead as the later wave heads out. And seven under par around this track is no mean feat.

  18. Schauffele settles for parpublished at 18:20 BST 19 June

    Schauffele -3 (17*)

Another fantastic putt from Xander Schauffele that doesn't drop.

His 20-footer at the eighth starts well outside the right edge of the cup and does its best to curl back to the left, but it's a slight over-read in the end and he settles for a three.

Par at the ninth will give him a superb round of 66.

  19. MacIntyre drops closer to cut linepublished at 18:19 BST 19 June

    MacIntyre +2 (16*)

Bob MacIntyre needs to be careful as another dropped shot leaves him close to the cut line.

Three over should keep you safe - MacIntyre is now two over.

  20. Another birdie chancepublished at 18:15 BST 19 June

    Schauffele -3 (16*)

Xander Schauffele is hoping to move past Matt Fitzpatrick and re-establish himself as Wyndham Clark's closest challenger.

And despite finding the sand off the tee at eight, he clips a lovey wedge over the pin and it checks up 20 feet left of the pin.

A chance to move within two of the lead.
