  1. Another par for Schefflerpublished at 20:10 BST 19 June

    Scheffler +1 (3*)

Scottie Scheffler's drive fails to find the fairway. He then catches it cleanly from the rough but sends it over the green.

Still within putting range, Scheffler dribbles it up close to the hole and taps in for par.

He'd have taken this start. Zero danger.

  3. Still no birdiespublished at 19:58 BST 19 June

    McIlroy -1, Fleetwood +1, Aberg -1 (3)

From the fairway, Rory McIlroy chucks a dart into the third green.

His ball thuds on to the green but meanders back to 26 feet - and he races the putt past on the left. But he makes the one coming back down the hill to prevent what would have been a hugely careless five.

Following a lengthy discussion with his caddie Ian 'Finno' Finnis, Tommy Fleetwood misses the green left but plays a delightful chip back across the green and pops in the putt to avoid back-to-back bogeys.

Ludvig Aberg makes his four, too, so no change and still no birdies today for this star-studded trio.

  4. Fitzpatrick begins with parpublished at 19:55 BST 19 June

    A Fitzpatrick +1 (1)

Almost a perfect start to Alex Fitzpatrick's second round but he's left his lengthy birdie putt a couple of feet short.

    He'll stay at +1.

  5. Scheffler pars second holepublished at 19:54 BST 19 June

    Scheffler +1 (2*)

Scottie Scheffler is denied back-to-back birdies as his putt just misses. An excellent effort from 11 feet.

He taps in for par. It looks like he is up for this.

  6. Postpublished at 19:51 BST 19 June

    Koepka +3, Young +2 (4*)

It's played four parred four for both the 2017 and 2018 US Open champion Brooks Koepka and the majors nearly man Cameron Young.

That's no bad thing, although both could do with a couple of birdies if they want to have any hope of challenging over the weekend.

  7. Niemann 'not proud' of throwing clubpublished at 19:50 BST 19 June

    Niemann +3 (65)

After his round, Joaquin Niemann recognised his error in throwing his sand wedge at the sixth yesterday. It cost him a two-shot penalty and he said that motivated him for round two: "I'm not someone that likes to be in that behavior. I'm the first one to judge myself when I don't behave on the golf course.

"That was a misbehave from my part. I'm not proud of it. Sometimes all the expectation of trying to play well and things doesn't go your way, you get frustrated, and that was me there.

"I felt like a little bit extra penalised with a two-shot penalty, but I think it is what it is. I think I'm going to learn from it. It definitely kind of helped me a little bit to have a better round today."

  8. Niemann throws up 65 after code of conduct breachpublished at 19:46 BST 19 June

It's been a rollercoaster couple of days for Joaquin Niemann.

The Chilean made a septuple-bogey 11 at the sixth yesterday, including a two-shot penalty for throwing his club in anger as he fell foul of the new code of conduct at major championships.

He clearly used it as fuel, however, as he skipped around in 65 today. At three over, he looks set to stick around for the weekend.

Incredibly, he will become the first player in nearly 100 years to make the cut at the US Open after making a 10 or worse in rounds on or two - the last was Bill Mehlhorn in 1929.

Not a bad response from Niemann, to be fair to him!

  9. Higgs on a birdie runpublished at 19:43 BST 19 June

    Higgs -2 (7)

Harry Higgs rolls in back-to-back birdies to make it three for the day already to climb up into a tie for fourth on two under.

Higgs came through qualifying to be first alternate and then got a late call-up into the field at the start of the week. The 31-year-old Texan is trying to make the most of that opportunity.

  10. Only one hole playing under parpublished at 19:43 BST 19 June

US Open round two holes averages - just hole five playing under par

We've had plenty of players through Shinnecock now today so the above is a decent reflection of how tricky the course is playing.

Only one hole is averaging under par - the par-five fifth. Feels like that's a pretty important place to pick up some ground, as everywhere else is fighting back.

  11. Scheffler off to perfect startpublished at 19:41 BST 19 June

    Scheffler +1 (1*)

Classic Scottie Scheffler. A wonderful approach shot leaves the American with a nine-footer for birdie, which he rolls in.

It was a mixed opening round of 72 for Scheffler, who is looking to complete the career Grand Slam.

If he is to do so, you would expect a charge at some stage.

    Why not now?

  12. Missed chance for Stevenspublished at 19:40 BST 19 June

    Stevens -1 (5)

The fifth hole is a 593-yard par-five affair and it's been offering up birdies galore today. It's the easiest hole on the course and Sam Stevens is on the green in two.

His eagle putt comes up three feet short of the hole. A nailed on birdie? Oh. That's ugly. Lips out. Par.

Putting is not the forte of the world number 54 who is ranked 129th on the PGA Tour.

  13. Jordan makes decent startpublished at 19:40 BST 19 June

    Jordan +2 (5*)

Solid start to round two for England's Matthew Jordan as he picks up a birdie and a bogey in his opening five holes.

He's very close to going one under for his round at the 14th (his fifth) but his 20-foot effort just grazes the cup.

  14. Fleetwood drops backpublished at 19:38 BST 19 June

    McIlroy -1, Fleetwood +1, Aberg -1 (2)

Rory McIlroy belts a three-iron into the heart of the green at the 262-yard par-three second. Good dig that.

From 30 feet, he doesn't start his putt high enough and it dies off to the right. No bother though. There's only been three birdies on this brutish par-three today.

A bit sloppy from Tommy Fleetwood. He misses the green right and can't hole his par putt from 12 feet. The 2018 slips to one over.

  15. Postpublished at 19:26 BST 19 June

    Herbert +2 (2)

Australia's Lucas Herbert has started his second round in fine style. A superb approach to the first set up a birdie and he then dunked in a 30-foot putt for another birdie on the par-three second.

But he's just sprayed his tee shot well right into the rough on the third and is in danger of giving a stroke or two back here.

  16. Stevens drops anotherpublished at 19:21 BST 19 June

    Stevens -1 (4)

Sam Stevens' scrambling skills are not quite as good as Rory's after he overcooks his approach to the par-four fourth. The American fails to get up and down for par. That's two bogeys in three holes to follow his birdie opener.

  18. McIlroy scrambles for parpublished at 19:18 BST 19 June

    McIlroy -1, Fleetwood E, Aberg -1 (1)

Rory McIlroy made bogeys on his final two holes yesterday from the middle of the fairway and he's just made another unforced error on the first, airmailing the green from 145 yards and leaving himself an extremely difficult chip.

But he nudges it back on to the putting surface and buries the 15-footer. Great up and down.

Tommy Fleetwood and Ludvig Aberg both found the short stuff off the tee and both miss a decent chance to immediately gain a shot.

  19. Clark hopes to win back fans after locker incidentpublished at 19:17 BST 19 June

    Clark -7 (69)

Leader Wyndham Clark says he hopes to win back some fans this weekend after getting "a lot of grief" since he damaged a locker in an angry outburst during last year's US Open at Oakmont.

"The thing that's unfortunate is that's not who I am, what happened last year," he said.

"I'm hoping I can win back the fans that I had or some new fans because it was a terrible incident. You know, I really feel like I can show people that I'm fun and outgoing, I'm fierce, competitive, love the game, respect the game, and I just had a bad moment.

"Hopefully I can win those people back. Yeah, I definitely feel like I'm in a better place. Hopefully a great weekend and great rest of the year, maybe I'll gain all those fans back."

  20. Bradley birdiespublished at 19:07 BST 19 June

    Bradley -1 (1*)

Here's Keegan Bradley getting into the red figures. The man who is still troubled by the US Ryder Cup defeat just up the road at Bethpage Black last September fires a pin-seeker of a second shot into the 10th green and buries the birdie putt.
