    Warwicks 74-0 v Surrey 328

Surrey have worked their way through four seamers in the opening 70 minutes of the day and Dan Lawrence is loosening up so we might see a spot of spin soon as the sun burns through the banks of cloud.

Alex Davies picks up his 10th boundary with a fine cover drive off James Taylor. He's on to 44*.

    Leics 88-2 v Sussex 361

Just what you want as an overseas signing playing your first game of County Championship cricket.

Tom Clark is struggling with his line and that one is wide outside off stump, allowing Jake Weatherald to crash it to the cover boundary to reach 50 off 65 balls.

"It's been a super knock," says BBC Sussex's Adrian Harms.

This Anderson lad looks like someone to watch - probably wouldn't get picked for England given the line of Essex bowlers in front of him...

    Alex, Cotswolds

Impressive levels of sarcasm for this early on a Saturday, Alex.

  4. Tough start to season for Worcestershirepublished at 12:10 BST 4 April

    Derbys 476-5 v Worcs

    Frank Watson
    BBC Hereford & Worcester

After a chastening day yesterday, things haven’t improved much for the Pears this morning.

Martin Andersson has played beautifully and though Luis Reece has been dismissed for 114 after a superb 263-run partnership, Derbyshire have sailed to maximum batting points.

The aim will now surely be to bat only once in the game.

Worcestershire must hope that when they bat, their collective mood will not be too much affected by the travails of the first innings. Easier said than done!

WICKETpublished at 12:08 BST 4 April

    Procter c Hartley b Bailey 0 (Northants 11-1 v Lancs 384)

Tom Bailey has found the edge and Tom Hartley takes a smart chance to his right at fourth slip.

There is a bit in this pitch, certainly with the new ball in hand, and that is a promising start for the visitors.

  6. Postpublished at 12:06 BST 4 April

    Warwicks 61-0 v Surrey 328

Rob Yates moves into double figures from 49 balls with a lovely pull shot from a short ball from James Taylor.

That's his third boundary in his 13* while Alex Davies has nine in his 39*.

Clearly hate running, these two, avoid it at all costs.

Surrey were 65-6 after lunch on day one. Bears are 61-0 just over an hour into day two.

Jake Weatherald may have only just stepped off a plane from Australia into what seems like winter in Leicester, but he's acquitted himself very well against the Sussex seam attack.

With the floodlights on and a pitch helping the seamers he's looked solid in defence and has readily picked up singles to keep the scoreboard ticking over.

The only wicket to fall was that of nightwatchman Tom Scriven who became Ollie Robinson's second wicket of the innings.

Sussex will be slightly disappointed to have only taken one wicket this morning but the good news is that Robinson looks fit and is bowling at good pace.

Warwickshire have a tremendous batting line up in theory but need to get off to better starts than last year. I think Alex Davies will regain his form now that he is no longer skipper. If the Bears can turn 39-0 into 100-0 we can get off to a win.

    Chris, Hampshire

Getting daggers because I fist pumped that Dom Bess beauty at my 50th anniversary dinner. I’m sure my wife will understand when she see’s the beguiling flight and turn!

    Henry, Glasgow

Congratulations, Henry. We appreciate your priorities. Best of luck getting through the day...

  10. ouch!

Postpublished at 11:59 BST 4 April

    Som 339-9 v Notts

First ball Jake Ball plays with his left knee off the inside edge, one of the worst ways to start your season with the bat!

A painful hobble, this might make him swing harder having tried to defend his first ball.

Craig Overton deprives him of a one out to deep point though, choosing to take the strike next over to try and score 11 before Ball faces again.

  11. Postpublished at 11:58 BST 4 April

    Leics 64-2 v Sussex 361

Sussex skipper Ollie Robinson calls up first-day centurion Tom Clark for a bowl. He gives Jake Weatherald too much width in his opening over and is cut away for four as the Australian left-hander moves on to 40 not out.

  12. wicket

WICKETpublished at 11:58 BST 4 April

    Ogborne b Pennington 2 (Som 339-9 v Notts)

That is a slightly odd decision and poor dismissal from Alfie Ogborne, but Dillon Pennington will take it having deserved more in his personal wickets column yesterday.

He was going to play it then tries to leave it too late, chopping on just like Josh Thomas did twice in the warm up game here v Glamorgan last week.

Full bonus bowling points for Notts, just one more needed for a Pennington five-fer, Somerset needing 11 more runs for one more batting point do not forget.

  13. Postpublished at 11:57 BST 4 April

    Durham 335 v Kent 90-5

Chris Benjamin has settled in alongside Sam Northeast nicely but Ben Raine is continuing to bustle in and pose questions.

He draws Benjamin forward in defence twice in succession but gets some late movement taking the ball past the edge and through to the keeper.

Huge pressure being applied and all the runs Kent have added this morning have come off thick edges into the off-side, barely anything straying onto the stumps from Raine and Potts.

Until now... Benjamin welcomes Kemar Roach into the action with a glorious drive through extra-cover to the fence from his first ball to move to 15*.

  14. How's the weather?published at 11:54 BST 4 April

Lots of chat last night at the end of the BBC News bulletin about Storm Dave approaching from the west.

It might be a bit blowy at one or two grounds but Dave seems to be tracking across the northern part of the country so let's hope we'll get a full day's play in most of our nine games.

  15. Bairstow planning batting testpublished at 11:54 BST 4 April

    Glamorgan 131-5 v Yorks

    Nick Webb
    BBC Radio Wales

It’s a definite maybe from Jonny Bairstow as to whether he continues in this match after a bang on the thumb, which appears to be sore rather than broken.

The Yorkshire wicket-keeper and captain was planning to hit some balls in practice to assess his fitness to bat, according to a message to the BBC from the visitors’ dressing-room.

In the meantime Dom Bess is acting skipper with 12th man Will Luxton fielding and Finlay Bean keeping in some welcome sunshine, and it was Bess who made the breakthrough in his first over of the day as he bowled Ben Kellaway for 52 with a beautifully flighted delivery that turned.

Kellaway and Colin Ingram had put together a much-needed century stand after the early batting horrors, with both reaching solid fifties before Bess struck.

WICKETpublished at 11:54 BST 4 April

    Allison c Prest b Jack 80 (Hants v Essex 253-4)

No double hundred partnership for Matt Critchley and Charlie Allison as the latter pulls another short pitched ball to Tom Prest at deep midwicket.

It has been a questionable tactic if it has been a tactic and not execution error to bowl short on this pitch with the old ball but Hants have finally prised this pair apart.

  17. Postpublished at 11:51 BST 4 April

    Warwicks 45-0 v Surrey 328

James Taylor takes over from Sean Abbott for Surrey and has a mixed first over with a no-ball, an outside edge which squirts past the slips and all the way to the rope for a Rob Yates four and then beats the bat, and the top of off by about four inches, with one which nips back and carries a mile.

Tom Lawes will take over from Matt Fisher from the other end after his fine effort with the bat yesterday.

The sun has peeped out over Edbgaston to welcome him.

  18. 50 runs

50 for Craig Overtonpublished at 11:51 BST 4 April

    Som 335-8 v Notts

71 balls it took him, including nine fours.

One of which he gains with a tonking pull through midwicket off Rob Lord.

The sound off the bat reverberates around the ground, echoing through the applause.

Only 15 away from a third batting point now are Somerset.

  19. wicket

LANCS 384 ALL OUTpublished at 11:51 BST 4 April

    Bailey c Kimber b Sanderson 39

Ben Sanderson has a deserved five wicket haul (5-79) as Lancashire's innings comes to an end.

It is a big swipe to cow corner that puts a full stop on Tom Bailey's entertaining knock, Louis Kimber taking the catch just inside the rope after it spends an age in the clouds.

Lancs will kick themselves that from a position of 312-4 they have missed a fourth batting bonus point but this match remains finely poised.

  20. Maximum batting points for Derbyshirepublished at 11:50 BST 4 April

    Derbys 454-5 v Worcs

Martin Andersson punches a ball from Adam Finch away square for four as Derbyshire's total reaches 450 with three and a bit over to spare.

The big partnership is ended, though, when Luis Reece chips a ball from Brett D'Oliveira to mid-wicket and departs for 114.

He batted for 213 minutes, faced 168 balls and his 14 fours - adding 273 with Andersson for the fifth wicket.
