Also an Essex supporter - I feel there is no issue with Noah Thain batting both innings. You should have to take 20 wickets to win a match not 19.

    Pretorius b Pennington 11 (Som 331-8 v Notts)

Just reward for Dillon Pennington who has toiled hard over both days.

On the spot with a little movement to get past what looked like a filthy golf swing to be frank.

11 off 16 balls for Miggy Pretorius who raced out of the blocks, but then found it no easier against experienced seamers.

Alfie Ogborne has played most of his first-class games against Hampshire, but he gets to bat v Notts here having worked very hard on his batting over the winter looking to become more of a bowling allrounder than just a bowler.

    Warwicks 39-0 v Surrey 328

Matt Fisher has seemingly found a sweet spot on the track just short of a length on about sixth stump, which sees the ball kick-up and back at the right-hander.

He spooks Alex Davies with his latest delivery onto that patch and Davies immediately walks down the track to point out the spot to opening partner Rob Yates to make sure he's aware too when the left hander is on strike from the other end.

  4. Bowling change for Nottspublished at 11:45 BST 4 April

    Som 331-7 v Notts

Olly Stone and Dillon Pennington have again bowled well, but plenty of play and misses have not gone their way.

Rob Lord comes on from the River End to replace Stone and Craig Overton takes him for two fours, a classic square cut the best of them.

Pennington has more in him though, he continues from the Trescothick Pavilion End.

    Kellaway b Bess 52 (Glamorgan 129-5 v Yorks)

The acting captain strikes - and what a great delivery.

Dom Bess gives it plenty of air outside off stump and the ball turns back between bat and pad as Ben Kellaway drives to clean him up.

    Classic off-spin dismissal.

Why do I already feel like it's going to be a long summer down in Kent? What did Jasper Carrot once say? You draw some, you lose some...

    Mark, Herne Bay

That's the spirit, Mark. Kent did actually win their opening two games last season but then... stopped winning, and ended up with the wooden spoon. Maybe they are flipping the script for 2026?

Mind you, Jasper also once said "Move, move, move, Funky Moped, go....."

  7. Division Two updatepublished at 11:40 BST 4 April

Middlesex have their second batting bonus point at Lord's, where they are 301-5 in the 94th over against Gloucestershire. Leus du Plooy is now 110 not out, with Joe Cracknell on 68.

  8. Postpublished at 11:39 BST 4 April

    Warwicks 39-0 v Surrey 328

Alex Davies picks up three boundaries in four Matt Fisher deliveries to move to a breezy 31* from 30 balls.

The leg-side boundary is very short and right-hander Davies cashes in three times and now has seven fours.

Rob Yates is hanging about at the other end with two scoring shots in 25 deliveries for his 5*.

Bright start from the Bears, this.

for Colin Ingrampublished at 11:39 BST 4 April

    Glamorgan 129-4 v Yorks

Colin Ingram cover drives George Hill for four and follows partner Ben Kellaway to 50, his taking 105 balls.

A similar stroke follows but this time only brings the South African a single - that is enough, though, to bring up the 100 partnership.

As an Essex supporter I absolutely agree that Essex should be allowed a substitute batter in the second innings but no way should a twelfth batter be walking out in the first innings

    Andrew, Chelmsford

This is in reference to Noah Thain replacing Tom Westley after the skipper suffered a finger injury yesterday. Thain may not bowl, but he can bat...

    Scriven lbw Robinson 11 (Leics 40-2 v Sussex 361)

Ollie Robinson finally has his man as nightwatch Tom Scriven departs at Grace Road.

The umpire takes his time but there wasn't much doubt about that one as it hit Scriven's rear pad.

Leicestershire captain Ian Holland comes to the middle.

    Som 321-7 v Notts

Nottinghamshire assistant coach Kevin Shine, back at one of his former clubs, also spoke to the media last night and he offered similar thoughts to those of Tom Abell:

"The opening spells from Olly Stone and Dillon Pennington were of very high quality, while Rob Lord and Lyndon James improved as the day went on and also applied a lot of pressure.

“I couldn’t fault the effort or skills of our bowlers in any way and I thought Tom Abell, in particular, played really well.”

And what we have seen so far this morning goes very much along with Shine's comments. Pennington and Stone have bowled well with just one reward.

Lord and James will be turned to soon and want to bowl how they bowled in the afternoon session more than the morning from a Notts perspective.

I am loving the contest between these two [Robinson and Weatherald] - two players with international pedigree. Ollie Robinson is looking so fit this season.

    Northants v Lancs 377-9

It is not exactly a vote of faith in the stickability of his skipper at the other end but Tom Bailey is letting loose here against Harry Conway.

He has bulled a drive through mid off for four and now lifted a maximum over the square leg rope.

WICKETpublished at 11:33 BST 4 April

    Evison c Robinson b Potts 2 (Durham 335 v Kent 68-5)

Three in 12 balls for Durham.

What a ball from Matthew Potts.

Joey Evison has to play at it as it rises up and in towards him but can only feather an edge off the shoulder of the bat through to Ollie Robinson behind the stumps.

Potts whips out the Alan Shearer celebration. Durham are in the driving seat and Kent are wobbling. The weather radar might be their best friend in the next hour.

Chris Benjamin is the new man.

  16. 50 runs

for Ben Kellawaypublished at 11:30 BST 4 April

    Glamorgan 122-4 v Yorks

Poor ball from George Hill and Ben Kellaway flicks it away for four to bring up a 91-ball half-century for Glamorgan.

Partner Colin Ingram is 48 not out and their partnership is now worth 94.

As an Essex fan, I am both delighted and very annoyed that Jamie Porter never got an England chance. Most consistent bowler of the last decade, done wonders for Essex but never got the call up. Madness!

    Richard, Essex

You're not alone in holding those views, Richard. And he's not the only Essex bowler who might consider himself a little hard done by.

  18. Postpublished at 11:30 BST 4 April

    Som 318-7 v Notts

Tom Abell also said after play last night:

“Both sides are in the game, but I believe anything over 300 in these conditions will prove a good total."

So anything now is effectively icing on the cake for the former skipper, but his current, stand in skipper Craig Overton is playing more defensively than expected, probably eyeing up a 50 as Miggy Pretorius settles into his innings.

    Leics 37-1 v Sussex 361

Slow and steady by Leicestershire so far, but their overnight pair, Jake Weatherald and nightwatch Tom Scriven, are still together.

Weatherald, who has a curious bobbing up and down movement as the bowler approaches, clips Ollie Robinson to the mid-wicket boundary for the first boundary of the day.
