    Rose -3 (2)

Justin Rose goes bold with his birdie putt but this is missing the right edge all day long. Still he'll take a birdie, par start.

  2. Par for Thomaspublished at 18:56 BST 17 May

    Thomas -3 (13)

Opportunity goes for Justin Thomas at the reachable par four 13th.

We see him birdie-putting from 35 feet after finding the greenside bunker off the tee.

It's a solid effort but only a par for the two-time champion.

Running out of holes to make a real statement?

  3. Postpublished at 18:53 BST 17 May

    Rose -3 (1)

Justin Rose will be a little disappointed with that. In prime position on the second fairway, the 2013 US Open winner can't get inside 20 feet with his approach.

A touch of early adrenaline kicking in perhaps?

Some pre-round predictions today. 1. It’s too much too soon for Smalley. Reckon he’ll fall away. 2. A play-off seems very likely. 3. A seasoned major winner (Xander, Rahm, Mcilroy, Thomas, Rose or Reed) will come out on top!

  5. Rose makes fast startpublished at 18:48 BST 17 May

    Rose -3 (1)

Justin Rose only just scraped into the weekend with a chip-in eagle on Friday but he looks to be back in contention big time now as he sinks a birdie putt from 14 feet.

  6. Back-to-back for Matsuyamapublished at 18:48 BST 17 May

What a way to respond to your first bogey of the day!

Hideki Matsuyama birdies the fourth and then steps up to sink a 20-footer for a lovely two at the par-three fifth.

The leader on the course, he's two under for his round and into a tie for second just two shots back.

  7. Fitzpatrick signs off stronglypublished at 18:45 BST 17 May

    Fitzpatrick -2 (65)

Matt Fitzpatrick almost signs off with a birdie on the 18th and drops his hands down to his knees as his ball just skirts the right of the cup.

Still it's a five-under 65 and he's climbed over 30 places today to sit in a tie for 17th as it stands.

We've chatted so much about the hard scoring here - but someone needs to get out there and win this tournament.

    Rose -2 (18:25 BST)

Justin Rose goes at the opening pin and drops a wedge in to around 12 feet.

If the Englishman can make a fast start, just who knows where it could carry him.

  10. How the holes have scored so far this tournamentpublished at 18:34 BST 17 May

    Hole graph showing holes 1, 6, 9, 13 and 16

The hole-by-hole scoring stats for the tournament show there are opportunities out there to score - and there are plenty of traps too.

They say tournaments are won on the back nine on Sunday. Well, 13 and 16 have been promising but watch out for the rest.

    Looking forward to that.

  11. Hideki hanging aroundpublished at 18:32 BST 17 May

    Matsuyama -2 (3)

Hideki Matsuyama would have been disappointed with his third-round 71, but the 2021 Masters winner is still well placed to make a run at this.

He's had a birdie, a bogey and a par so far today and sits four back.

  12. Gotterup back in businesspublished at 18:30 BST 17 May

    Gotterup -3 (3)

Chris Gotterup fell away from things over his back nine yesterday, but he's back in business today with a birdie at the third moving him back to three under.

And given this leaderboard that means he's right back in the thick of the action again.

  13. English in touchpublished at 18:28 BST 17 May

    English -3 (5)

Harris English finished second in this last year and he's making a charge up the leaderboard again after successive birdies on the second and third took him to three under.

Two pars have followed to leave him within striking distance if he can get back on the birdie train again.

  14. Thomas on the movepublished at 18:27 BST 17 May

    Thomas -3 (11)

Someone always makes a run - and Justin Thomas knows that better than anyone after coming from seven shots back to win this very tournament in a play-off in 2022.

Well, the American is on the move again today and has just knocked in his fourth birdie of the day on 11.

He's improved to three under par for the championship.

  15. Scheffler's stone cold putterpublished at 18:26 BST 17 May

    Scheffler -1 (6)

Scottie Scheffler picked up an early birdie courtesy of a 20-foot putt, but the flat stick is blowing more cold than hot again as he missed another from four feet on the very next hole.

And his putter was stone cold again a bit later on the fifth as he missed from eight feet to cost him a bogey.

So at one under and with his putting problems continuing it's hard to make a case for the world number one winning this from here.

  16. Postpublished at 18:23 BST 17 May

    Fitzpatrick -2 (16)

Almost an eagle for Matt Fitzpatrick on the 16th, who knocks a wonderful approach into 12 feet from the right rough.

His putt is perfectly paced but lacks the direction. Still it moves the Englishman to five under for today and well on course for his first round below 70 this week.

He has climbed well up the leaderboard on Sunday, it's just a shame this is likely to be too little too late.

The hosts have dominated the US PGA Championship of late, with each of the last 10 winners coming from the USA.

Australian Jason Day was the last international player to lift the Wanamaker Trophy back in 2015 - will there be another tonight?

There's four Americans and six other nationalities in the top 10 overnight.

  18. Can Smalley convert first major?published at 18:15 BST 17 May

    Smalley -6 (19:35 BST)

Alex Smalley holds a two-shot lead as he chases his first major victory - but he may have needed an extra shot as a buffer.

As 12 players have held the 54-hole lead over the last 10 years while chasing a first-ever major triumph.

Five of them led by one or two shots and all five failed to convert, while six of the seven that led by three or more took home the trophy on Sunday night.
